Well to be fair, most Japanese companies only hire women as part time employees and don't expect them to hang around after they have a kid anyway.

Did someone say maternity leave? We wife received short term disability checks. The values went up and down each week and a few were skipped. Then the bastards sent me a bill for overpayment.

Made me want to get a vasectomy. Or was that the idea?

Alveen 2008-01-06 05:22:50 AM
$9/month? That's like a week's worth of food. Probably less in Japan.

Thank you.

There's never a time Japan doesn't take the prize for weirdness, and it's good to see the tone of this thread set early.

Notice the sense of entitlement so typical of the feminist. She expects other people to be forced by law to pay her cash for months to sit at home. That's feminists: always demanding, always taking, never giving or serving.

Legislated maternity leave in the US is unpaid. Your trollcellence is weak.

gwowen: Wow. That's Trolltastic.

Hehe.

I'm not sure how much we get in the UK, but it's a LOT. More than necessary frankly, certainly more than the six weeks per-kid we got in the US.

Alveen: $9/month? That's like a week's worth of food. Probably less in Japan.

My cat's food cost about 6 US dollars for a five pound bag. But I buy the cheaper brand my cat likes. Other brands can be 50 dollars for a four pound bag. Canned food is about the same as in America at around 60 cents for a can of cheaper stuff and up to two dollars a piece for the spendy brand.
Not a huge budget, no, but 1000 yen can feed a cat or small for a month.

At least they're trying to get Japanese people to think of animals as more than just toys or fashion accessories. It can be really sad seeing the situation animals are in over here. Japan doesn't have the same system of animals advocacy and shelters like in the West. Most only hold animals for a week or two waiting for the owners to claim it. Euthanasia rates are nearly 100%. Most people opt to buy a puppy mill pet store puppy than adopt. Then, when it's not cute anymore or becomes inconvenient they get abandoned or euthanized. When I first moved into my apartment here, my ward office gave me a Helpful Tips Pamphlet. Once section had info on where to license your pet. If you move and cannot take your pet, it said, please bring it to one of the following animal control locations for disposal. :'(

With dogs, its not such a problem. It's easier to prevent a dog pregnancy than a cat pregnancy. Cats get the short end of the stick.Getting an animal fixed can be damn expensive (my five pound male cat has an appointment this month for a neautering, its going to cost 200 dollars) and a lot of people just don't bother getting it done.
Neighborhoods get together every so often, gather up all the local kittens, tie them into bags and toss them into rivers rather than get their cats neutered.

I don't want to sound like I'm bad mouthing Japan. I love this country, but its still Asia. Asia is no known for it's great animal treatment.

Well, it sounds like they phrased it euphemistically. They probably don't want to offend by telling people who move into an appartement "Don't be stupid, we have enough problems controlling the population of these lower lifeforms as it is, don't feed the Koreans by dumping cats and dogs on the street!".

Don't even get my started on the stray Korean situation here! Some people get their cats and dogs fixed but nobody ever gets their Koreans spayed or neutered. Almost every week I see Koreans who have been hit by cars lying to the side of the road. :'( And the shelters usually won't even try adopting them out. They get eithanized quicker than pit bulls in major American cities.

Legislated maternity leave is bullshiat. Companies should be able to hire and fire whoever they want, whenever they want, and however they want. Pregnant woman are one reason why America is lagging behind countries like China and Japan economically. Our government is useless.

Sorry, poor troll fu. Japan has parental leave, too, but it is more restrictive for men. And women can get partially payment of their salaries while on it, which is more generous than the U.S. Please play again.

Japan gets away with maternity/paternity leave because unlike Americans, they do not have a sense of entitlement. I have spoken to Japanese women before and they work extra hard to make up for lost time whereas in America, women are demanding and are always looking for ways to file sexual harassment suits because it is the easy way out. Japanese culture and their attitudes towards the workplace are much different than ours.

Where I work (in the US), we're not even allowed to call in sick. Ever. A guy was recently fired because his father died and he went to the funeral instead of coming in to work.

A union would come in handy, but most of us are immigrants who speak little english and are afraid of losing their jobs, so too fearful to form a union.

That time might be now.

That's Shoko Nakagawa, a rather unique celebrity in Japan. She's a singer, actress, model, blogger, manga artist, anime otaku, cosplayer, and daughter of a famous singer. And she loves cats. Ok, maybe putting her cat's nose in her mouth is a little weird...

Bravo on the maternity leave reference. A lot of people do not realize that you might be entitled to 90 days maternity leave in the US BUT Your job is only there for you if you have FMLA to protect it. If you are employed there for less then a year you can be screwed. I know from first hand expierence. We don't get it paid like in Europe. So we are not the best supportive country for anything. We outsource all our jobs to the lowest bidder and you can get fired for just about any reason that you have to take off for. And you are expected in most situations to come to work while you are ill... Too many days off for that and you are also fired even with a dr's note. No FMLA and you are a pawn waiting to be fired.

No, technically speaking we're self employed "independent contractors", so labor laws apparently don't apply to us.

Submittard, seems like one of Fark's necessary idiots, with retarded comparisons to stir shiat up. It's one company offering incentives to their employees to care for pets better, which is a good idea to bring attention to caring for animals. As far as maternity leave, I had friends who had great maternity plans both in Japan and Canada, depending on the job. The only point of retarded headlines for pointless articles is to stir the shiat-pot up a little more.

Nononono. Land of Unefficacious Efficiency. Which must be discussed in meetings headed by semi-retired 75 year old men who spend most days fishing, except when they come to Unefficacious Efficiency meetings, at which they take up the first 15 minutes of the 120 minute meeting on giving introductions, greetings/commiserations for the new year/old year/birthday/death of the sub-manager's pet/lunch, and then gives inspiration on beating whatever is inefficient.

At this point they pass the microphone to semi-retired 75 year old man B, who then speaks for the next 15 minutes, saying exactly the same things as the man who came before, but because it's coming from him it's obviously more inspirational. This continues until either you run out of old men, or you run out of time, at which point the meeting agenda is thrown away, and the last 4 minutes and 41 seconds are spent planning out a new meeting for next week.

At which exactly the same thing happens. Luckily, the people who are actually in charge, fixed the problem over lunch the day before. THe meetings are just there to make the retired guys feel like they have something to do.
