Keep hoping kid.

For one, that they'll even tour, and for second, that audiences will want to see the only marginally talented drummer from Nirvana, as opposed to John Bonham's son, who is much better, more talented, and has been playing drums MUCH longer than he has (Jason Bonham started at 4, not 14) under the tutalige of a drummer that Grohl would give his left nut to even meet, except for the fact that Grohl was 4 years old when Bonham died.

I'd rather watch and listen to Grohl than almost any 'technically' better drummer.

That's a quite snobbish statement. I've seen Bohnam live and even though I don't care for Nirvana I must say Dave can handle his own on drums.

You have no idea how easy it is to play the drums.

Grohl is a great versatile drummer. If he were to play for Led Zep, he'd hold his own.

Great insightful comment there dumb ass.

Foo Fighters is what Foo Fighters does.

They are a mainstream pop rock band.

How does that make Grohl's drumming talent "marginal" ??

Anyone who wishes to question Grohl's ability as a drummer I urge you to listen to that last KILLING JOKE album from just a couple years ago. The drumming is nothing short of astonishing.

Tight and concise but brutal sounding.

He would be perfect in ZEP.

PerfectlyCromulent 2008-01-05 06:42:04 PM
That might be the coolest show ever, it it would never happen. Even if Led Zeppelin were even to go on tour, there's no way they'd take anyone but Jason Bonham.

tararose 2008-01-05 06:48:33 PM
You know what? Let's shoot for the moon- Jason Bonham on drums, with Grohl joining him mid-show for a duel of "Moby Dick."

Grohl is a decent drummer. If Jason doesn't do the show Grohl is a good replacement. Now on with the Buddy Rich is the only real drummer ever comments.

Anyone who questions Grohl's talent needs to listen very closely to the drum parts on Songs for the Deaf. QOTSA's touring drummer can't play half the stuff Grohl recorded.

DD0 [TotalFark] 2008-01-05 08:44:10 PM
I was going to mention Grohl's drums with Queens of the Stone Age, but magical beat me to it.

Anyways, even if you despise their music, you can't deny that Grohl bangs some great shiat out on that album. Personally, I don't exactly like them, but listening to the difference between what he recorded and what they did before/now is a big difference.

Voramyr 2008-01-05 09:21:42 PM
Don't judge Grohl's ability based soley on Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. He actually does a lot more than just "pop rock". He's been known to do lots of sessions for thrash/death metal bands when they can't find that "right" person to do the recording.

And not just drums, either.

HeadbangerSmurf [TotalFark] 2008-01-05 09:35:41 PM
Is Bonham still a raging alcoholic? If so, I'm betting Grohl gets his wish.

Yeah. I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there.

I love Dave Grohl. A lot. But Joey Castillo is also a very good drummer. He's not as polished as Grohl is now (Castillo tends to start songs off a bit too fast live, especially the ones Grohl recorded), but still very good.

I mean, imagine how much it would suck finding/being Dave Grohl's replacement. He does well. Don't enjoy his drumming as much on live jams of old songs, but his newly recorded material is top notch IMO

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-01-05 11:09:32 PM
Dave Grohl drumming for Led Zeppelin would be like
[warning: this list is a bit overexaggerated]
a) Nick Mason drumming for Wetton or Belew/Bruford-era King Crimson
b) Matt Cameron [somehow going back in time and]drumming for Joy Division
c) The Drummer from Neu! drumming with Peter Gabriel-era Genesis

Get my drift? Just like those drummers aboveIMHO, Grohl isn't the best choice to drum with Zeppelin. Like the above drummers in the list, He just wouldn't fit very well. [Jason Bonham would be a better choice IMHO, like he did on the England date]
Don't get me wrong, i think that Grohl's a good drummer (technical-wise), he just doesn't have the character or flash or the style of John Bonham.
ie. i like to think of Bonham's style as
heavy/powerful
rockin
slightly swingy/jazzy
soft and textured when he feels like it

marginally talented ?

He played for Nirvana is the front runner for the foo fighters and played the drums for the Queen Of the Stone age album," My fav personally from him"

He isn't Neil Pert but he is better than marginally talented.

No, Keith Moon wouldn't have had the patience to spend an entire month to record a single song. The Beatles wasting of studio time made Metallica, or Axle Rose's excesses, seem lame in comparison.

IMO, IMO, IMO.

(Everyone get that? Good.)

Dave's an insanely talented musician and a good producer. Would he do well behind Zep? Hard to call. But, think about it, this is Zep in '08. Plant can't hit the high notes and I personally know 20-somethings in nowhere bands that can play circles around what's left of post-smack Page.

Much like the Who, another band I dearly love, I think Plant/Page should bow out gracefully. The best I've ever heard of the Who was "The Kids are Alright" soundtrack and the best I've ever heard of Zep was "The BBC Sessions." I'd prefer to remember them that way, two bands at the top of their game.

Grohl hits the skins HARDER than anyone I've ever heard. It may not be pretty, it may not be technical, but he SLAMS the sticks like no one else. But do you notice Bonham's drums on any Zepp track than you do the snares on Teen Spirit or Bleed?

Dumb statement of the night. Harder? Maybe he's using the wrong weight sticks, or just crappy production techniques?

Better yet. Can he do it with his bare hands? No sticks?

Seriously, listen to Jason's playing at the end of Kashmir during the O2 reunion show and this discussion would end now. Jason is the only person qualified to fill in for John Bonham.

Wow, what a dumb thing to say. Pull out some of his Foo or QOTSA work and try to play along with it; hopefully you'll realize how sadly stupid that statement really is.

radioberlin 2008-01-06 04:56:19 AM
Grohl would bring creativity and the interest of non-Zep fans but no; you'd rather have someone doing beat for beat copies like any other cover band while Zep goes off into obscurity as the crowds thin out because the other members are shells of their former selves.

Actually, Jason Bonham's drumming style was almost as equally out-of-whack. The only difference is that he has a more intimate knowledge of the music and the other players. The thing that struck me most during the O2 show was exactly how much of a 90s drummer Bonham is.

Whoever plays is essentially going to be imitating another player's style. Bonham could do it, but Grohl could do it too. I saw Zak Starkey play for The Who, and he could probably do it damn well too. Herb from Primus could too. Dale Crover would probably be better than any of the above.
