I don't understand why supermarkets sell cigarettes anyway. They always keep them behind the customer service counter or in some other similarly unreachable place, so that the idiot in front of you who wants some has to hold up the entire line while the clerk, who invariably has a walking speed somewhere between "sloth" and "turtle," goes to get them. I look on these people the same way I look at people who pay for groceries with checks.

It keeps customers from having a reason to go to the local convenience store. Convenience stores live on cigarette sales volume (sometimes at a loss) to bring customers in for coffee and lottery tickets.

I think subby may want to go back and reread the article. "The Rochester-based company, which has 10 stores in Erie and Niagara counties" and "Tops Markets, Buffalo Niagara's No. 1 supermarket chain by market share" don't seem to rate the #1 place in the US. But hey, you got your headline accepted. Whoo hoo!

If you don't think Wegman's is the best grocery store anywhere, ever, you've never been to one.

CNY FTW!

You've got me there. Never been to one. Silly of me to not instantly show proper respect to Wegman's. Now if it were named Weg-Mart maybe.

It used to be the best grocery store until they began squeezing out competitor's products in favor of their own (inferior) brand. Try to buy a small bottle of olive oil (for example). The only small bottles are Wegman's. The competing brands are the six gallon size.

Wegman's is awesome. They're upscale but not that much more expensive. Plus I can find Hob Nobs. I've run into Ryan Miller at Wegman's a couple times. Plus, their subs are tasty. Also, you can get Southern Tier beer, plus a ton of others that you can't find anywhere else. I did some of my Christmas shopping there.

This move offsets my favorite Wegmans experience: seeing a giant sign advertising irradiated meat. Take that, vegan no-nukes hippies.

Because I've never heard of it.

I can't stand their subs, and their chinese food always makes me sick. Their pizza kicks ass though, and their soups are pretty good.

Plus the wegmans near me has the absolute hottest cashiers and customers for some reason. All the fat chicks go to Tops for some reason... *shrug*

Just the other night I was out buying some groceries and the woman in front of me used a check. What really pissed me off was she filled the check out after everything totaled. Her time management skills sucketh!

Message to frakers who still use checks at grocery stores. GET A DEBIT CARD!

MMmm, Roast Beef / Turkey sub... Subby, you decided what I'm having for lunch...

As far as having a good beer stock, they've got nothing on Consumer Beverage. But if you didn't already know that, chances are it's a wee bit farther for you than Wegman's... or you're not in Buffalo.

Debit cards are the devil. I prefer bags of change that are conveniently unrolled.

While they are at it, they should calculate the total number of fat of all the groceries and divide it by the BMI of the person purchasing it. You hit a certain level, and your going to have to take out some Oreo's, chubby.

/Worker at grocery store as a youth
//Was amazed that most fat people did absolutely nothing to stop their fatness (buying frozen pizza's, cookies, sugary sodas, nothing diet).

Wegmans is pretty awesome. I've never seen another supermarket that actually offers truffles (at $199/lb) in a locked case in the fresh produce section. Not to mention baby pineapples, fresh mangosteen, rambutan, goji berries, and all kinds of other crazy crap. I can get 99% of my shopping done at there plus Trader Joe's.

However, their selection for some products (e.g. barbeque sauce) is rather limited, so I still have to go to another store for that stuff.

Eating fat doesn't make you fat, retard. Excess calories do, whether from carbs, protein (though it's difficult to eat too much protein), or fat.

What's next? Ohh, goodbye snack aisle. See ya beer case. Adios red meat! "'Cause we know what's good for ya." Makes me ill to think what the future holds for consumer choices.

I had a friend from the east coast tell me about how great Wegman's was. He even mentioned, "And they've got stores in 5 different states!"

Well, 5 east coast states. Out here in the west, where the states don't change every 20 miles, that's akin to having stores in 1 state.

A grocery store that has baby pineapples, but only a limited selection of barbecue sauce? Yuppie alarm bells are going off in my head!

The sign was a banner in the Wegmans in Ithaca c. 2004. "Try our irradiated meat" or something similar. I didn't have a camera with me. Next time I was in Ithaca the sign was gone.

I've only been in a wegman's once. It was confusing as hell. And after navigating the store for 15 minutes trying to locate the booze and finding the very poor selection i made my way through a very long line to find that they wouldn't sell me beer because my ID was from out of state. So they can suck it.

and who buys smokes at the grocery store anyway? they are way cheaper at a gas station.

But i am getting sick of this slow grueling process of making the world smoke free. even here in northcarolina (a state built on tobacco), they are doing this kind of stuff and reducing the places you can smoke to in the middle of some feild off of some rural road

CruJones 2008-01-05 01:30:43 PM
checks have one advantage, although it's getting smaller: the float. If I get paid tomorrow, I can write a check today, and go ahead and get food. Not so with my debit card.

MacEnvy: If you don't think Wegman's is the best grocery store anywhere, ever, you've never been to one.

This needs to repeated.

Wegman's is the best supermarket ever. There's a reason why it consistently ranks #1 in national consumer rankings.

Last year it tied for #1 with Whole Foods. But having been to both many times, I'd definitely give Wegman's the edge over Whole Foods.

who the fark is Ryan Miller?

Buffalo Sabres ice hockey goaltender who got rocked last night by Ottawa. Three goals in first period. He's not a "celebrity".

Wegmans doesn't suck but I would prefer a Fresh Foods.

Wegman's is freaking awesome, if you don't think it is amazing you really haven't been to one. I would easily place it above Whole Foods (less pricy and pretentious). I could care less if they stop selling tobacco products, I have as much respect for smokers and their ability to get product, as they do for everyone else's and their own health.

I know what you mean. We don't have Wegman's here, but it's the same with most chains. They all have their own brand. Price Chopper has "Best Choice" which ironically is the absolute worst quality product you can buy. They do the same thing.

If I want a quart of milk for coffee I can buy a quart of "Best Choice" *shudders* or a gallon of the regular milk. It wouldn't be so bad if all of the best choice crap wasn't 2 days off from being expired.

That's the Price Chopper chain operating stores in Kansas and Missouri, right?

The Northeastern Price Chopper chain actually tends to have their store brand products at least as good as the national brands. However, their milk is more expensive than Stewart's, a convience store chain based in Saratoga Springs, NY.
