Why? All three of those bands were not huge arena draws in the 80s because they sucked. Although i have no desire to see them again, i can tell you from seeing each of them a few times over the years that they are pros and will put on a great show for the people(35-45yos) who want to show up in ripped jeans and hark back to their youth.

Hey! I LIKE Def Leppard, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.

dugitman: people(35-45yos

Even then... I'm 25, still rather see them over the current crap that people consider to be music. Besides... the cougars go to these shows.

I used to listen to those bands in the 80s, too.

But there's lots of things I did in the 80s that I have absolutely no interest in returning to ever, ever again.

I saw Def Leppard back in 2000, and they were quite good. I was smashed beyond belief though.

Nonsense. They started the decade pretty sucky and became increasingly so as the 80s progressed.

The eternal "all music except what I like sucks" argument. Def Leppard and Styx not only played arenas, they both had successful stadium tours. REO was a lesser draw but scored with a number of hits. This type of tour makes me hope the guys from Supertramp will bury the hatchet one day.

All they need to do is throw in Journey to have the perfecta of bands that I would love to see... with their earlier, better lineups.

Eric Draven: the cougars go to these shows.

This is 100% true. You can't beat an 80's rock ballad band for bringing in the hot MILF's. The music isn't so bad that you can't ignore it as you go hunting.

/of course, if you see my wife and her friends there, keep your hands to yourself because I ain't going

dugitman: Why? All three of those bands were not huge arena draws in the 80s because they sucked.

Yes, they sucked. They sold out arenas because the majority of people have horrid taste in music and they just want to go see the bands they hear on their Top 40 radio who pose with their instruments and blow dried hair while the little girls squeal.

put on a great show for the people(35-45yos) who want to show up in ripped jeans and hark back to their youth.

I'm 52. These guys (and Journey and Night Ranger, etc etc) ushered in what I consider to be the dark ages of rock.

DandamanFL: hope the guys from Supertramp will bury the hatchet one day.

Now Supertramp is a band I liked from back then.

When I hear Styx and Def Leppard, what I like to do is take a pencil and jam it into my ear canal so I never hear anything again.

Seriously, those guys are all to rock music what spam is to fine dining.

I love Styx, they have had some great songs. Sure everyone says the suck and Babe and Mr. Roboto are horrible.... but they've got 14 albums, so out of like 200 songs, even 10% of the bad ones don't matter.

I've seen Styx in concert 6 times and have always enjoyed every bit of it. Now that Dennis DeYoung is out it's not really the same when his songs come up but I can't do much about that...

I own almost every Vinyl record, some multiple copies. I own every CD and DVD. I'm a Styx fanatic and I don't care what anyone thinks!

As opposed to Peter Frampton, Boston, Aerosmith, and Fleetwood Mac? Gimme a break. I didn't particularly like the music of Styx or Def Lep, but I did enjoy myself at a couple of their concerts. The Hysteria tour basked in its own glam-silliness. Saw REO pre and post HiInfidelity. They always seemed like a bar-band who couldn't believe they were that popular. Cronin is a pretty good frontman. For that matter, Bon Jovi was entertaining both times i saw them. If you are going to an arena show, why would you NOT go see an arena band? I personally don't like Coldplay, Dave Matthews, or new U2. However, those guys have the money, experience and professionalism to kick the crap out of Heartless Bastards, Yo La Tengo, and Wilco. Now, stick the same people in a 500 seat theater and we have a whole different contest.

Precision Boobery 2008-01-05 01:54:37 PM
That headline makes my brain hurt; something is misplaced.

For me, it begins with Pyromania and ends with Hysteria. As for the other two bands, I'd've preferred to have never been reminded of them.

BassmanBP 2008-01-05 01:58:02 PM
This is news? Def Leppard and Styx went on tour together LAST summer, too, with Foreigner as well. It was a solid show by all three bands, and still kicks the crap out of most things out there.

I like Aerosmith but then I don't consider them an 80s band since the first album came out in '73. The rest you mention do indeed suck.

I don't go to a show because of where it's taking place, I go for the band. I haven't been to an "arena show" in many many years but some of the ones I attended back in the day were pretty great (Zep, Who, Tull, Rush, Zappa, Yes).

Well technically Def Leppard has been around since about '77, their first album came out in '80 though.

Fleetwood Mac '68, Boston '76, Frampton '72. What 80's bands are we talking about? REO and Styx both came form the early 70's as well '71 and '72.

Just making sure that we're clear on the fact that none of them are technically 80's bands :)

Yeah, okay. They still suck. I didn't realize those crappy bands had been torturing me for that long.

/Mac was actually decent in the old days (pre-Buckingham/Nicks)
//Frampton was tolerable when he played with Humble Pie
///And I didn't mind Journey's first album (pre crappy vocalist)

dugitman [TotalFark] 2008-01-05 04:10:25 PM
I picked all those examples because they were 70s bands.

Zep, Rush, Yes, and the Who were good(never saw Zappa or Tull).

My original point was that casual concert-goers from that era will go and enjoy themselves. Those bands were competent musicians who were the standardbearers for the type of rock music which was most popular at the time(their teen years). I have never been able to figure out why anyone gives 2 shiats about what type of concert other people enjoy. While they may not have been relevant for 20+ years, I give those old farts credit for doing what they love for a fraction of the cash they once enjoyed. Not everyone can be AC/DC for cryin out loud.

It's just me being a music dick. It hurts my brain when I hear people say that bands like that (Styx, Def Leppard, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Foreigner, Night Ranger, etc) are great because they really aren't and I just can't let it go. If it makes you feel better I still get in arguments at home and at work about this stuff even though I'm way old enough to know better.

Not everyone can be AC/DC for cryin out loud.

Another great band that I never had a chance to see live. Dammit!

There is no suck involved in Def Leppard, REO Speedwagon and Styx. None. Interesting though that Def Leppard will tour with two Illinois bands. Also interesting because they were playing for a rather different crowd than REO or Styx. Though plenty of overlap. And all three bands feature some damn good musicians or have at any rate, I'm not sure what lineup REO will have.

If it was Cheap Trick with REO and Styx, they could bill it as the Land of Lincoln tour since all three are from Illinois.

As some else pointed out, all those bands were long in the tooth by the time the 80s rolled around.

Also, if you haven't heard the original Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, you're doing your ears a disservice. 'Cuz they kicked all forms of ass.
