"The results of the Iowa caucuses reveal that conservative Christians remain a powerful force in American politics. That had to be a great shock to those on the far left,'" Dobson said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.

Great shock? More like a pleasant surprise. Liberals are pleased as punch at Huckabees win. It's "conservatives" who are fretting, Jimmy. And it's not the left, but the right that is shocked and worried.

I'm still not sure what to think about Huckabee. Taken at face value, he doesn't seem so bad. I just can't shake the feeling he's going for the left-to-moderate vote, and will abandon every principle he's espoused so far. Best choice I see from the Republicans, anyway.

Honestly, the 'left' probably should like him. He's pretty genuinely populist, basically a Democrat plus a get-off-my-lawn policy regarding abortion. If Obama holds his lead, it's going to be battle of the moderates.

//Still going with Obama because he's moderate on purpose rather than by accident... but I'd take Huckabee over Ms. Clinton or Mr. 9/11. Kind of a toss-up with Romney, but I think he'd be less harmful than Edwards, too, overall.

yeah, and the best part, is all of us who would rather not vote for any of the standard crop of republicans can still convince our southern baptists mothers that ol' huckleberry is the good christian choice, that mormons are scary, and that guliani wears a dress...

THAT way if he gets the nomination, ok so a vote for huckleberry... not the worst thing that could happen... but if NOT...

well, mormons are scary and guliani wears a dress. might as well stay home.

Oh, no, an official who has almost nothing to do with the composition of education standards might be someone who has an opinion that would be bad to put into the educational standards!

Excuse me while I quiver in fear over here. If you expect the president to be a good example for the youth of America, you were born about 200 years too late.

//Honestly, if you really feel that way, you should vote for him for pres, because otherwise he'll run for governor again or congress, both of which actually do have more than a lip-service impact on actual educational curricula.

I hate doing this, but QFT. I don't care about anything else Huckabee says. He lost my vote permanently with his religious bullshiat, like saying that evolution isn't proven. The same with any other candidate. If that means go to a third party, then I will. If that means that I don't vote at all as protest, I will.

You obviously completely missed the point. It has nothing to do with his control or lack thereof over education and everything to do with the fact that he's too f---ing stupid for the job.

True, I had forgotten about that one. I guess that makes him more mixed-bag than actually moderate. Like the way dot-printers sometimes created a grey shade by alternating black and white bits.

I stand by my 'still better than Hillary or 9/11' statement, though. Also my 'I hope Obama carries the nomination so I don't have to try to parse out the next-best candidate with real seriousness' statement.

To be fair, not much was understood about AIDS back when he said it. By which I don't mean that much wasn't understood by the population at large, but rather by Huckabee himself, who apparently enjoys being willfully ignorant on a lot of issues long after there is any excuse for it.

The no true scottsman fallacy, let me explain it to you:

It is not possible (person) X is (a kind of person) Y because no (kind of person) Y would (commit the act of) Z.

In this case you are suggesting The Why Not Guy's statement is a fallacy because he claims the advocation of quarantining people with AIDS is not moderate and such acts are not much of a Christian behavior.

These are both true statements -- and do not eliminate someone from being Christian (just not a very good Christian). It does not limit a person from being a moderate but it does say this act is not moderate.

Pattern matching skills are good -- they need to be used with advanced thinking skills to make good arguments.

I actually kind of like Huckabee, even though I'm a godless-atheist-practically-socialist-leftist. Let me break it down:

1) Huckabee is the first overtly "Christian" politician of any importance I've ever seen who seems to interpret the faith more along the lines of Acts and the Sermon on the Mount than Revelations and Leviticus. Note how he's always talking smack about the rich and corporate America, actually has something of a health care plan, an education plan, talks about helping the poor, etc. I think the last one was William Jennings Bryan (who of course, was much much much more on the left than Huckabee is on most issues.)

2) Yesterday, I saw him give an interview on MSNBC in which he said he respects atheists more than religious people who don't really follow what their religion says. I can respect that position.

3) He has the corporate/business conservatives shiatting their collective pants, which is always good.

4) He just seems to be a nice guy.

Of course, he supports the war, wants to institute the incredibly regressive and harebrained National Sales Tax, among other crazy and stupid things. But I'm not completely and utterly repulsed by him like most Republicans, is all I'm saying.

Well, there's no evidence for believing in God or the Bible, but there are plenty of examples of governments doing a bang-up job of running a national health care system. They're not perfect, but a whole lot of them work a much better than our bloated for-profit system. I can't understand how people continue to support a health care system that is explicitly run on a business model that is based on denial of care. That's just insane.

Also, I have a question for all you conservatives: why do you have such a problem with "bloated bureaucracy" in government but have no problem with equally bloated bureaucracy in, say, the private insurance industry?

The weird part is how apathetic the non-evangelical public is. Is this the road to how extremism of any form succeeds in any democracy. A largely apathetic body politic notes the insanity, and says, "Isn't that interesting, oh well, back to my Seinfeld reruns...Newman...Jerry...it never gets old."

Nice comeback. Well done.

Driving Without Pants: Also, I have a question for all you conservatives: why do you have such a problem with "bloated bureaucracy" in government but have no problem with equally bloated bureaucracy in, say, the private insurance industry?

It's the insurance company's business as to whether or not they want to be bloated. It's my business if the government is. I am a taxpayer. If I don't like one insurance company, I can choose another. Imagine what will happen to the quality of care when there is no competition, if all docs get paid the same, if hospitals have no incentive to be better than the next. Please, just use your brains...

And don't whine about the poor little children who can't get care in today's system. There are more hospitals out there that treat kids for FREE for cancer and other major diseases than you could count if you had a day for couting set aside.

You like Darwin so much? Here's an idea...if you are too farking stupid or lazy to get a job and pay for your own medical needs, then let Darwin weed your genes from the human pool. Die before you breed more lazy idiots.

I went to high school in Colorado Springs. Dobson is in-freakin'-sane. He wants the government to regulate everything everyone does (except himself and his "church," of course, who should get tax breaks). I don't understand how that's even close to being a true "conservative."
