No (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth?

Travesty.

Aarontology [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 01:01:32 AM
Nothing from Rush, and nothing from Les Claypool. I call bullshiat.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 01:20:24 AM
No Geddy Lee? No Frank Bello? No Mike Starr/Mike Inez? No Duff McKagen?

Massive fail.

Chariset [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 01:24:29 AM
No Radioh-..

Ah, nevermind. It's not Pitchfork, and Colin's not that good

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 01:27:36 AM
oh, and no Steve Harris either.

Fail.

I call shenanagins. Seinfeld scene transition riffs are the best.

No Justin Chancellor. F that.

g-booby 2008-01-04 05:00:49 AM
I would offer that Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" and possibly Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" should at least get honorable mentions

Gilligan_Buddy 2008-01-04 05:01:05 AM
Some good ones missing, Mike Inez comes to mind, but it does have Lou Reeds Walk on the Wild Side, which I love.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 05:13:25 AM
The good: the inclusion of the Barney Miller theme. (pops)

I *loved* that show and the theme so much... especially with Season 2 finally coming out on DVD this month.

The bad: the exclusion of John Deacon's bassline from "Under Pressure." I really dug it.

The ugly: that Vanilla Ice took that bassline from "Under Pressure" and...

*shudders*

Yeah.

spacebar 2008-01-04 05:16:40 AM
worst. list. since the last one.

Gangway Fathead 2008-01-04 05:16:49 AM
Hey, Bruce Thomas is on it. It's an okay list for that.

LonMead 2008-01-04 05:22:49 AM
I could agree with Cream on this list... Jack Bruce is a Bass GOD... but "Badge" is much more representative of what he could do.

sloughtown4ever [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 05:38:59 AM
No 'Guns Of Brixton'?

Gee No Stanley Clark?

gnasche 2008-01-04 06:37:28 AM
Hmm, no Ohio Players.

I think the title of this article should have been:
"Rock's Greatest Band Riffs by White Guys with the Exception of the Bob Marley Reference Because We've Heard of Him"

/You are a bad, bad missis
//In them skin-tight britches
///Running folks in ditches
////Baby, about to bust the stitches

gnasche 2008-01-04 06:38:20 AM
err, I meant *Bass* Riffs.

bubbabullock 2008-01-04 06:48:05 AM
Whipping Post???

Barton Fink 2008-01-04 07:16:57 AM
Teacher by Jethro Tull should be on that list.

Bouree isnt a cool bassriff, it's a cool bassline

ghoulie_mask 2008-01-04 07:27:26 AM
Screw all you whiney douches, I can name 748 other bass lines that I would have included, too. But as a bass player, I was refreshingly surprised .... that list wasn't half bad. Any list of 20, 30, 50 or even 100 is of course going to be sorely lacking tons of great entries, if for no other reason than there's just a lot of outstanding music out there. But those particular bass lines spotlighted were all pretty cool for various reasosn (although I personally have no love for the 3 90's entries).

I'm just amused and surprised some of my personal favorites that I never thought would be mentioned (the Tull/Bach walking bass line, the Barney Miller theme, the Chain) were there. Some were important, some are just fun, some are harder than others ... so what. OK list, as these dumb things go.

A couple of personal favs I would have tossed in:

Crooked Beat by the Clash
Digital Man by Rush
a whole bunch of King's X riffs
and yes, it's Jazz, but I love Freedy the Freeloader by Miles, just a lot of fun

Wheeeee! Bass is fun!

Ilmarinen 2008-01-04 07:43:00 AM
What ghoulie_mask said. I was surprised to see no Who record until the guy explained it (still don't really buy it, though) and IMO there should be a song from Led Zeppelin II on there...... but all in all, a good, fun list.

biatching is easy. I mean, lots of Beatles songs apart from Come Together would be just as worthy. Same for other bands.

tequilasundae 2008-01-04 07:51:53 AM
another bites the dust!???

FAIL
the single most iconic bass line ever

The spirit of Radio..
hell even RIO by Duran Duran...give it a listen...he's playing his ass off!!!

great bassline, again not a riff.

Taylor is just following the chord progressions.

a bass riff generally has a song written around it not the other way around.

ghoulie_mask 2008-01-04 08:02:54 AM
Oh, here are a few more fun bass lines (that are actually synth) that are a blast to play:

- Dissedent by Thomas Dolby (and The Flat Earth, while we're at it)
- 99 Red Balloons by Nena (I have yet to meet a bass player of any type who doesn't either openly or secretly love that riff)
- Army of Me by Bjork ... wicked menacing, kinda difficult to keep up for extended periods

Instead of making this thread about how good that guy's list is, how about we bass players toss out riffs and lines we love that others might not be familiar with? Broaden our horizens instead of playing the stupid "fail" card like some rock critic snobs.

Barton Fink 2008-01-04 08:04:36 AM
Groove is in the Heart should maybe be on the list....

Roundabout is a great riff although i'm sure Squier wrote it to fit the song.

Riff, line, who cares. I've been playing for 20 years, I just like talking about what is fun to play.

Felicia - Blues Traveler.

Quite possibly the most perfect bass line in rock. In my opinion.

How is a large pizza different from a bass player?

A large pizza can feed a family.

jonasborg [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 08:19:48 AM
no Vic Wooten? No Edgar Meyer?

keylock71 2008-01-04 08:26:57 AM
Not bad.

No Mike Watt (Minutemen) or Clint Conley (Mission of Burma) though...

"We gotta get out of this place" is the first song I learned to play on bass.

Jeezum Crow 2008-01-04 08:32:49 AM
I'm a bit late to the party, but I really would have liked to see the bass line from the them to Northern Exposure on there. And I did not see one mention of Charles Mingus or Stevie Wonder, which makes me a saaaad panda.

Jeezum Crow 2008-01-04 08:34:17 AM
Ooooohhh...bass lines of rock. I am retarded and hereby retract my Mingus and Stevie Wonder rant. Carry on.

My personal selection:

Head East/Never been any reason

Crewmannumber6 2008-01-04 08:59:10 AM
No Allman Brothers, no Duck Dunn, no Tommy Cogbill (Muscle shoals, e.g. Aretha Franklin). Obviously someone who thinks recorded history began in 1985.

Sunshine Of Your Love is actually fairly easy on bass, it's one of the first songs I learned. Same with Stir It Up. Badge and Bufalo Soldiers are hard though.

gbiewer 2008-01-04 09:17:51 AM
Does Huckabee approve? He's a bass player right?

/shuddering in fear

simsite9 [TotalFark] 2008-01-04 09:26:49 AM
Nice call on the Barney Miller theme. Still, you really need a Led Zeppelin song in there someplace.

There's something wrong with your bass amp. I can hear it.
