Right. I guess Fox News is only OK with taxpayer-subsidized profiteering if it goes to military contractors and pharmaceutical companies.

To echo other's sentiments, while I think Gingrich selling himself as an environmentalist is a transparent sham, Steve Milloy is in no position to make that judgement of anyone. He's a paid industry apologist who has no credibility on science or the environment.

nuts! 2008-01-03 06:55:27 PM
wow, newt gingrich, who at this time last year was a possible presidential candidate is thrown under the bus for espousing pro-environmental views?

I'm beginning to hate republicans for being vultures.

Get over it liberals, global warming is fake and the enviroment is a fraud. If more americans listened to Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, instead of so called "scientists", they would understand this.

Come on, like how many scientists have talk-radio shows? None that I know of. Science is where liberals retreat to when they can't compete in the market place of ideas.

Did the fox guy just call the ban on DDT senseless ?

Skleenar 2008-01-03 07:19:12 PM

FTA:

But nowhere does Mr. Gingrich indicate that we've been diminished by the ongoing malarial genocide in Africa caused by the senseless 1972 ban on the pesticide DDT - which was promoted by the Environmental Defense, a command-and-control activist group laughably lauded by Mr. Gingrich as an "advocate of market-based solutions to environmental problems."

Steve Milloy is a tool.

There is no such ban. The 1972 ban applied only to the US Agricultural uses, not worldwide and not for use against malarial vectors.

The link above is from the Malaria Foundation International concerned about a proposed ban on DDT for malarial control that was defeated in 2000. DDT for malarial control is applied indoors, and does not present an evironmental threat of the sort experienced by it's widespread use out of doors on food crops.

As much as I dislike the man, Newt Gingrich is shrewd.

It appears that he sees the damage the GOP is doing to itself by ignoring very real environmental issues, and the opportunities that exist in addressing them.

An eco-conscious GOP (or at least one that appears to be) would be a more powerful party.

I'll give Newt a pass here. If you go around and find some stuff on his ideals for science education, you'll find at least one reason to respect the guy. He has got to be going "WTF?" a lot lately with the anti-evolution talk coming from GOP people.

Skleenar 2008-01-03 07:27:29 PM
Mr. Gingrich wants us to work for a common cause but he has little use for the opinions of others, regardless of their expertise and his lack thereof. In response to the view of Shell Oil's CEO that America will always need foreign oil even as it develops alternative energy sources, Gingrich dismissively writes, "It is difficult, if not impossible, to have an intelligent conversation about energy if we cannot agree that independence from foreign oil, ... [and] from fossil fuel, is achievable." The book is better titled, "My Way or the Highway."

Here's a plan to do just that by 2050, published in the January issue of Scientific American.

Again: Steve Milloy is a tool.

Once again another article by Steven Milloy that Fox withholds that he is paid by Oil companies even though in that past when they were caught doing this they said they would not do it again.

How? They can't turn on the oil companies and maintain an acceptable level of eco-friendliness.

It would depend on which activist you ask for the level.

Maybe they have to rethink their love affair with a dinosaur industry.

Oh sorry I am wrong there is an organization at his home address and he is the only member funded by Exxon. So according to fox this is different.

I guess Newt heard the amphibian population is being decimated by pollution and he is overwhelmed by concern for his family.

Mr. Gingrich's notions are often wrong or simply bizarre, and his prescriptions amount to little more than a full embrace of rent-seeking "green" business and left-leaning eco-activist groups, both of which often masquerade as "protectors" of the environment.

You know, I truly believe the right wing's outright antipathy towards anything environmental is based on the 'No lefty can be right about anything, ever!' mind set that Rush O'Hannity is constantly pushing.

FriarTuck 2008-01-03 08:02:42 PM
If anyone watched the Kerry-Gingrich debates on global warming (what to do about it, not 'does it exist') were very enlightening.

They did a tour of colleges and think tanks debating a hard CO2 cap or a reformed credit-trading system.

vdantev 2008-01-03 10:00:53 PM
Gingrich was, is and shall remain Reagan's little butt-monkey. No job too slimy for this scumbag.

Fox gets upset if one of "theirs" stops drinking the Koolaid.

I remember how David Hackworth was their fair-haired military expert, right up until he started criticizing Rummy. Suddenly no more Hack.

Actually, that's probably because he died in 2005.
