The beatles wernt/arnt a supergroup, they didnt comprise of members from other groups they were just one packaged deal.

So much has been said and written about the Beatles -- and their story is so mythic in its sweep -- that it's difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously the best at what they did and the most popular at what they did. Relentlessly imaginative and experimental, the Beatles grabbed a hold of the international mass consciousness in 1964 and never let go for the next six years, always staying ahead of the pack in terms of creativity but never losing their ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass audience. Their supremacy as rock icons remains unchallenged to this day, decades after their breakup in 1970.

fark you and your goddamn music-critic talking bullshiat. Its farks like you that fark up music.

I wish people would listen to music and stop trying to over analyze it, pigeonhole it, define it, rank it against other music, or try to appear smart by writing about it and using 3 dollar words like "moreover" or phrases like "Relentlessly imaginative and experimental" and "ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass audience."

People like you make me sick.

Nice synopsis. Ignore the fake-angry kids who fear English. You nailed it.

Oh, and just to piss off Obscured by Clouds: oldandwiser is perspicacious.

mrjah I don't fear English or any big words, but using them when unnecessary is rather imprudent.

Oh and a more appropriate headline would have been Liam Gallagher to front "supergroup," perhaps one bigger than Wings.

Hey kids, can I be in yer Manchester supergroup?

stoneboy 2008-01-03 06:43:56 PM
Wouldn't Ian Brown be the front of the group? I mean he did win the God Award after all...

And what the hell happened to Reni anyway?

ilikmunkis 2008-01-03 06:54:15 PM
The headline is just making fun of the fact that Oasis once said they were bigger than the Beatles, which we know is not true. The Beatles have carried on their fame for much longer and were much bigger in their time. You can ask a group of high school students today if they've heard of The Beatles, and the majority, if not all of them, will say yes. If you ask them if they've heard of Oasis, and the majority will say no. Stop arguing like sissies about the technicalities of whether The Beatles were a 'supergroup' or not.

/High school student
//Knows who and listens to The Beatles and Oasis

Obscured by Clouds: ilikmunkis look up what supergroup means.

dictionary.reference.com:

"Main Entry: supergroup
Part of Speech: n
Definition: an extremely successful musical group, esp. one created from members of previously popular groups"

So they could or could not be considered a supergroup or not. It's a matter of opinion.

"Moreover" is a 3 dollar word? The problem with you is, you are a retard. It's people like you that make me laugh.

Not in the case of The Beatles

Cut and paste often, do we? Allmusic.com isn't exactly obscure.

I also doubt Oasis ever said they were bigger than the Beatles. Link?

Really, where have you been? The moon? I'd give you a link, but I'm not going to bother googling something you could easily do. Search around 1995 or so.

And what the hell are you idiots arguing over super group for? The fact of who is in the band is irrelevant, the headline was a joke about Oasis claiming to be bigger than the Beatles. Not that the Beatles are a super group.

I have better taste than all of you.

RaKellaKAT 2008-01-03 07:48:17 PM
OH MY GOD PEOPLE.

The headline was a joke, because Liam Gallagher once said that Oasis was bigger than the Beatles, and possibly on a secondary level because John Lennon once said the Beatles were bigger than Jesus.

A supergroup is a musical group, such as the great example provided by hbk72777, which is made up of members of other successful bands. No one is saying that the Beatles were a supergroup, though everyone agrees that they were a super group. Okay? I don't see what was so confusing to everyone!

And Obscured by Clouds, don't be angry: some people love discussing music the way others like discussing history or politics or boobies. *smalley* And that's... okay */smalley* Calm down, baby.

deadsanta 2008-01-03 07:56:18 PM
I got the reference, but still, FTA:

"...former Smiths star Andy Rourke"

Uh, no. The Smiths had two "stars", Morrissey and Marr. Rourke was a replaceable heroin junkie. Supergroup is a dubious appellation.

Travelling Wilburys, Plastic Ono Band, Blind Faith, Cream, Asia, CSN+Y, Power Station (lol remember them?), those were supergroups.

Also, "supergroup" output normally sucks, except for maybe the one hit single that brought the bands together in the first place.

RaKellaKAT 2008-01-03 08:00:30 PM
dead santa like "we are the world"?

/hee!

oldandwiser

thanks for a nail hit right on the head.

It is impossible to ever surpass the Beatles because rock and roll will never be young again. The Beatles created and defined the concept of the evolving and developing rock band. There wasn't much before them.
Elvis,Richard,Berry etc...were "sensations" but not serious lasting band leaders. Even Buddy Holly abandoned the Crickets.

btw--this is nearly my identical response to the occasional "Hendrix sucked" threads.

Nobody can ever be "better" than the Beatles and even if so only BECAUSE of the Beatles.

yeah,yeah I know...I know...the Velvet Underground blah..blah...and the Stooges...yada...yada and Silver Apples,Captain Beefheart,Mothers/Zappa,Arthur Lee/Love...etc...etc...were ALL "cooler" or just as "original" or whatever.

Sorry,Beatles first and best and that won't change.

ultrachronic 2008-01-03 08:21:13 PM
Wait wait... did i read that right...?

2 vocalists and 3 bassists to form a "supergroup"? I think some aspects of their band may be lacking...

DammitCatQuitJumpingOnMe 2008-01-03 08:46:36 PM
I liked Oasis. It's good to know there's people out there that are more miserable than you are.

ishot2pac 2008-01-03 09:22:54 PM
Maybe they will be a sucky supergroup like Velvet Revolver.

vdantev 2008-01-03 09:57:48 PM
Cooler than Jesus? Been done before.

From a journalism point of view, the quotes around the word "supergroup" are a hint of sarcasm on the part of the writer, who wouldn't have used them if he believed it was the appropriate word.

Kinda like when the RIAA sues people for "piracy."

genzoman 2008-01-03 11:36:08 PM
this group will definitely maybe be better than the beatles

The quote was Noel, not Liam, and it was "If you're not in it to be bigger than The Beatles, it's just a hobby."

danduran 2008-01-04 12:07:42 AM
And I just found another quote where did say something boneheaded to that effect. I stand corrected.

Still, I think Noel is underrated as a comedian. Seriously.

KramericaWallet 2008-01-04 12:32:07 AM
Let me guess:

Liam and Britney duets.
I'd buy that to induce vomit.
