His talents would be wasted there, but I'm sure he would do a fine job. UN is a better spot.

As I noted in the redlighted version of this story, the main source for this quoted in TFA is a former shill for both Reagan and Bush Sr., who currently works for a school that has Kenneth Starr as its dean. And if a guy with that kind of creditials pulls a prediction like that out of his ass, well then by golly, it must be true!

Bill Clinton on the Supreme court?
um, no.
He made a fine president but I think he wouldn't work there.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see a tradition of appointing ex-presidents to the supreme court.
Talk about a good way to screw up the balance of power.

I like what Nabb1 said -- putting aside the fact he was disbarred, I don't think I'd support putting anyone on the bench that hasn't spend sometime in the judiciary already.

Uh, yeah, what I said. No bench experience, no experience as a litigator, no experience with litigating constitutional law. I wouldn't support anyone who didn't with that resume. Heck, Harriet Miers had more experience as an attorney and she was a terrible choice.

If Bill Clinton was on the Supreme Court we have to deal with daily rumors of Ruth Bader-Ginsberg riding Bill's Baloney Pony... and there is not enough bleach in the world to wash out the mental picture of something that obscene.

I'm sure the Republicans would like to use that as a scare story to get out their base in a year when their base is otherwise burned out on them. They need to come up with some scare tactic as that's how their party works these days instead of on grand ideas.

Never voted for Bill, but ended up liking him when the fundies impeached him. That being said, he's a terrible choice for the Supreme Court for many of the reasons noted above... disbarment, lack judicial experience, etc. PLUS, the SC is political enough already without throwing an ex-president into the mix.

He would do well at the UN - if we are going to be a part of it, we may as well have a skilled diplomat representing us.

Besides, we already have Clarence Thomas. Oh, wait, his sixth months on the bench were more then enough to qualify for the Supreme Court. It's not like he got his seat on the D.C court of appeals as a political favor, no, he put in years of good solid...damn.

His bench experience was limited, sure. But he chaired the EEOC, which is largely a litigious branch of government specializing in race-related Con Law, for 8 years, and was Asst AG for Missouri for a few years.

I'm not saying Thomas was immensely qualified. But Clinton's hasn't even been a practicing lawyer in 30 years (when he was AG). I think the cases are a little different

And it DID get him some courtroom experience :)

Look I love Clinton. And I'm not against a President joining SCOTUS. Taft was a professor of Con Law before he joined the McKinley administration. Clinton never really did anything like that, and being the President does not qualify you for the bench.

Sorry.

Warren's a fascinating case. I probably would have diasgreed with his nomination if I was around, but he was a fantastic justice.

And Clinton could be good. I just think there are probably better qualified candidates out there.

The one thing I'm certain of is George W. has pretty much assured that another Bush will not be elected to the Presidency for a very very long time.

I've been wrong before, though, and hope I am this time. One promising factor is the supreme asshatery the republicans have been up to. Not to mention the list of asshats they have up for nomination.

That won't happen if Hillary wins.

Wikipedia: Article 5, Section 3110 of the United States Code, however, does prohibit federal officials from appointing family members to certain governmental posts, including seats on the Cabinet. Passed in 1967, the law is apparently a response to John F. Kennedy's appointment of Robert F. Kennedy to the post of Attorney General of the United States.

Do you honestly think there is any voter out there who meets the following criteria: A) Won't vote for Obama simply because he is a black man, B)Would otherwise be voting for a Democrat.
Really???? Those aren't the votes he's counting on. Honestly, Obama doesn't need the racist vote to win.

That's an interesting one. Powell did have to follow in his wake cleaning up his mess every time he went overseas, but I can definitely see Bill one-upping the current git.

As for making him a judge... no. Mr. Clinton's primary strength is his personality, which is probably the least important thing for a judge, and his greatest weakness is thoughtful consistency, which is kind of what you want in a judge. So it would be both a waste of his talent and something he wouldn't do very well at.

Regarding Taft: he was really going for the SC job his whole career, most of my history books seem to indicate that he didn't particularly want the executive job.

Their Democrats just gave the nod to a black dude.

Their Republicans just gave the nod to a Baptist preacher

I'm actually not too displeased with the current Supreme Court. Despite all the panic & brouhaha over Thomas, Roberts and the ossified Scalia, they've been fairly resistant to politicking and pressure from the Right and Left.

Clinton on the Court, however, would be an absolute disaster. C'mon, the guy isn't called Slick Willie for nothing.

I'm not sure if being a felon and losing your license to practice law disqualifies you from being a supreme court justice but I suspect that it probably does.

randomjsa: I'm not sure if being a felon and losing your license to practice law disqualifies you from being a supreme court justice but I suspect that it probably does.

Article III of the Constitution states:

The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish. The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behavior, and shall, at stated Times, receive for their Services a Compensation which shall not be diminished during their Continuance in Office.

That's all it says about the qualifications to be a Justice. In other words - (found here (new window))

Because the Constitution does not set forth any qualifications for service as a Justice, the President may nominate anyone to serve.

So, you fail.

Oh do I now? I couldn't have been talking about his chance of being confirmed now could I? You just assumed I meant if he was legally permitted to be a justice. I'd say what happens when you "assume", but you only made one 'those' out of yourself.
