So, rather than buying one box set of new material, you gotta buy every album you already bought. Or, you can just download it all for free.

Damn -- I've bought some of Van's stuff in both vinyl and CD -- he expects me to buy the album a third time for bonus music. Sure Van.

Asked for comment, Mr. Morrison said, "Bip bop bip bop bip!"

Hmmmm...I dunno if this is gonna work.

I like The Man alot but going out and paying for an alternate or live version of songs I already own?

I have a lot of alternate material from bands and I gotta say that its true: RARELY is anything left off an album better than what's put in the album.

To give Van credit, he often uses completely different arrangements with live material -- sometimes better than the album, usually interesting. Check out It's Too Late to Stop Now.

Sweet...was just going to post about jumpsuits rather than shoes. TLW FTW...Van at his best...and worst.

Oh, and MiamiBlues is absolutely right. See him live and depending on which backing band setup he's using it's an entirely different show...completely.

If only Warner (or even better, Rhino) would remaster Astral Weeks and Moondance. The early Warner (and sony/columbia) transfers to compact disc are terrible.

spacebar 2008-01-03 01:12:13 PM
Great, except they have already remastered that part of his catalog twice, the last time being about 10 years ago. And they still sound great for 16bit/44khz discs.

Also, The Philosopher's Stone is a killer two cd collection of outtakes from this period. So I imagine the most of best previously unreleased tracks are on that.

However, Moondance hasn't been remastered since 1990. And Astral Weeks hasn't been remastered since it came out in the late 80's. Warner has the rights to those two and they both need remastering desperately. And bonus tracks from those sessions are rarer and would be awesome.

So c'mon already Warner Bros... remaster those suckers while Van's audience is still able to hear and work their cd players.

Iron Maiden will sacrifice Van Morrison to the gods whom Eddie plays with like the devil's toys they are.

Or something.

I'll take Maiden over Van Morrison any day. I enjoy V.M., but Maiden are f-ing unstoppable. Anyone who's seen them live will tell you that. I've been a fan since I was a kid.

"Astral Weeks" album is overrated.
Just a bunch of "profound" pseudo-hippy-dylanish[??]-stream of conscious lyrics + annoying jazz vocal scatting/over vocalized words/delivery, overtop an acoustic guitar folky jazzy bed with jazzy drums/congas and piano/flute/sax.

that being said, the title track is pretty good.

Third_Uncle_Eno - "Astral Weeks" album is overrated.

I used to think that too, but then I got it, or it got me. After almost 40 years there is still no other album like it, especially when you're in the mood for

Thanks, spacebar :-)
I'll give it another try.
Maybe it'll grow on my just like Peter Gabriel's "Up" or Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom" did.

MiamiBlues: Check out It's Too Late to Stop Now

Done and done, I saw him on that tour and have gone through 2 copies on vinyl and it was one of the first CDs I bought. I didnt say that there arent good/different versions only that RARELY is there some fantastic song that didnt make the release.

Third_Uncle_Eno: "Astral Weeks" album is overrated

Ahhhhh, actually you're wrong on this.

Not only were the arrangements NOT written out - the entire album is improvised - keep in mind what he did and when he did it; the album is forty years old and STILL sounds fresh.

I don't care if I've already bought Tupelo Honey several times. If it has unreleased tracks and is remastered, I am buying it again. That and It's Too Late To Stop Now.

Uhhhh. actually YOU might be wrong about that....[that the entire album was improvised] .... [i kinda believe you about the arrangements were not written out].
here's a quote you might be interested in reading, from the Astral Weeks wikipedia entry:
"the live tracks for the sessions were performed by Van on vocals and acoustic guitar, along with upright bass (not bass guitar), second acoustic guitar, vibes, flute, and drums. The only instruments added afterwards were strings, horns and the occasional drum part."

I would not call that "completely improvised".
Were you saying it was all live in the studio, and the rest of the musicians were just following along with Van's chords and timing and whatnot?
Or were you saying that Van's acoustic guitar and vocals were all improvised, and the rest of the band recorded their parts later?
That last one seems much more likely to me....
