So he has to get rid of two bottles of wine worth about 1/4 of my annual rent payments to get onto his flight? I'm crying for this poor dear man. Or not.

lilplatinum [TotalFark] 2007-12-31 05:42:39 AM
It would probably have been cheaper to bump himself to a later flight...

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2007-12-31 08:38:17 AM
But he'd forgotten about the 100ml liquid rule applying to carry-on luggage, and although the precious Grange slipped through Customs he came unstuck at the final security check.

He didn't "forget". He thought that he was above the law and that he could sneak past the guards. Typical asshole rich boy. He brews crap "beer" too.

co-conspirator [TotalFark] 2007-12-31 09:33:44 AM
He didn't HAVE to smash them; he CHOSE to, to make sure that no one else could get their filthy hands on them.

Or he could have chose to take a later flight.

In either case the terrorists have won.

That's about a dollar for every death on 9/11.

/I'm sure somebody will try to correlate that somehow.

I'd smash them too. I'm not about to let some mall security reject be rewarded with $6,000 worth of wine for being an ass over idiotic rules that should have never been passed to begin with.

Either way, the dumbass deserves this. He could have easily had them checked into his luggage.

QFT. If you're going to be an asshole over rules (it's wine for christ's sake, not gasoline) then I don't want you enjoying anything.

Agreed. I'm sure there are a few folks out there completely unaware of the "War on Liquids", but I got the impression he just didn't want to follow the rules. He can find sympathy between shiat and syphilis in the dictionary.

Yes, but I'm sure the insurance company doesn't insure an item when the policy holder wilfully destroys it.

If he's that rich...

1. Take a later flight.
2. If checked baggage cannot be retrieved, spend waiting time drinking the wine. ALL of it.
3. Board drunk and happy.

Still, am I wrong to assume that wealthy gits like him travel a lot? The only way he'd forget about the liquids rule is if he's extra-stupendously-special-stupid.

I've never flown. How prevalent is this? If you get your luggage with everything in it except your wine, you know it was stolen by someone in the airport, is there no recourse?

I have brought a number of bottles in checked luggage and never had a problem with theft. Maybe my taste is just below TSA

It happens enough that it's a concern. I wouldn't put anything valuable in my checked luggage. Know people who have gotten things like sunglasses and watches taken. You can file some forms, but you aren't seeing them again or getting any compensation.

I've never had any problems, but if anything is stolen or lost during transit airlines the airline policy is "We hate you and fark off."

Uh, why not ship them? Airport security in Canada never really confiscates your belongings, per se. They ALWAYS suggest alternatives such as storing your items until you return or shipping before you voluntarily relinquish your items.

At least, that's how it was explained to me.

xooxox 2007-12-31 12:54:15 PM
If you RTFA it said that the airline was more than happy to put it in his luggage, but security would not allow it.

"I had the lady from hell, who said 'No sir, this is going to be bloody destroyed' even though the Emirates people were happy to find my baggage and pack it for me," he said.

I am surprised some influential person whose stuff was jacked has never pressed the issue. Someone with connections could get the FBI to go an arrest the screeners. Would be interesting.

Githerax 2007-12-31 12:54:36 PM
1.) He's not necessarily "rich", he's a regional manager. Those bottles might've represented, to him, a real investment in wine, like "when I get the money I'm going to get some great wine and really enjoy it, even if it means no holiday trip this year."

I say this because I'm likely to do the same thing. I like wine and gourmet food. I don't make a lot of money, but if I save up for a couple of years I could get a $2k or $3k bottle of wine (at the sacrifice of not upgrading my computer for a while), and if some customs person told me it was confiscated I'd do something irrational.

2.) I'd "forget" a rule about 100ml bottles myself; I'd never suspect, personally, that something as ancient and ubiquitous as a bottle of wine would be prohibited, especially around holiday times when *everyone* is celebrating something or other.

3.) Once the customs lady got ahold of it, she wouldn't allow him to have it back or do anything else, she said it's over. I'd break those bottles myself; over her head. Then sue her. Then hire a thug to stalk her and destroy her house and car. Well maybe not. Maybe.

krauts ahoy 2007-12-31 12:55:00 PM
Jolonco: Either way, the dumbass deserves this. He could have easily had them checked into his luggage.

No, if he had checked them, the bottles would have exploded in his luggage because the cargo holds on planes are not climate-controlled. I agree he deserved it, though. Should've had them shipped separately if he really needed to impress his business associates that much.

I still don't understand the whole 100 ml limit thing. Wouldn't 100 mls of explosive or flammable liquid still be enough to do a hell of a lot of damage to an airplane?

darkjezter 2007-12-31 12:55:27 PM
"Dumbass" tag would have been more fitting. The guy should have put the bottles in his checked baggage rather than trying to sneak them on the plane.

Brandiver 2007-12-31 12:55:52 PM
He destroyed 3000 dollars worth of wine to prevent the possibility that someone might find and enjoy the wine?

"I thought if I'm not going to be able to drink them, nobody is"

Dun dun duuuun! The trophy wife had better not break up with him...

/would have taken another flight
//duh!

Beeriffic 2007-12-31 01:00:16 PM
This happened to me coming from Madrid to the States. I bought 2 lovely bottles of Port in the Duty Free - in the airport - no less. No one on our flight said we would have to go through security once we got back - we made it through customs fine but not the checkpoint. I asked the guy what they did with it and he said they go to govt auction. I asked him to take them home and drink them instead and but he said he couldn't. This happened to about 80% of our flight. It has nothing to do about security and everything to do what the govt can get in their pockets.

paje00 2007-12-31 01:01:25 PM
seriously, who here actually read the article? (except for xooxox) and who here has never forgotten anything in their luggage, like a pair of scissors or a pocket knife? he tried to get them put in his luggage, the biatch wouldn't let him, then he offered to open the bottles right there and drink them with everyone. the biatch said "no sir." wtf else was he supposed to do? as someone said, i'd break them over her head.

Brandiver: He destroyed 3000 dollars worth of wine to prevent the possibility that someone might find and enjoy the wine?

I think he wanted to stop the lady at security from basically stealing his wine for herself and her friends. I do the same thing if the TSA tried to confiscate any of my stuff. I'd guarantee it was garbage.

justanotherfarkinfarker 2007-12-31 01:01:41 PM
They are not going to bother stealing your wine, they look for easy to move items and cash.

If it was such a good wine -and I'm sure it was good- why not just take the risk of it getting stolen and drank? Someone would enjoy it anyway and isn't that the point. A bagage handler wouldn't know the value of a 1980 and an '82 Grange. If this d-bag didn't announce they were worth a shiatload, no one in security would. Ship it fedex insured next time dumbass.

/always makes me wonder how some people get rich

JeffreyScott 2007-12-31 01:02:08 PM
From reading the article, it appears the guard wanted to keep them for herself as she refused to allow him to check them even though the airline staff had agreed to find his bags and pack them for him.

Just because he has wine worth that much doesn't mean he is rich. It's very possible that he bought the wine during the vintage year and they are now worth that much. There are a lot of bottles in my family cellar in the basement that have appreciated 5x to 10x from what we paid for them.

/wine futures FTW

ScorpioT 2007-12-31 01:03:45 PM
A lot of people here think he's rich because he owns $3k bottles of wine. He works in the industry, which means he has more access to wine as it becomes available, or shortly after release, than the average person. Who's to say that he didn't buy them when they became available and has been sitting on them ever since?

Also, I believe once you get through the screeners and into that ladies domain there is no going back with what they deem to be contraband. Though this isn't in the US, so I'm not sure what rules apply over there.

Yea, yea I know scream and rant against the rich, this is FARK after all.

Airport security should be hired partly based on common sense. Those bottles were clearly not a threat, even though they technically violated the liquids rule.

So true. I own a few art catalogs that are worth somewhere between $750-$1000. I got them while I was in art school for $40 a piece. Art students that pay attention and go to shows in larger cities should be sitting on gold mines. I am poor as hell, but I have a few little industry perks that to people with money think are worth a lot.

Sounds like he suggested having a Social, but they wouldn't allow that just as they wouldn't allow him to put it in checked luggage.
