Anyone who whines about Rotten being a sellout is an idiot.

What do you think the whole Sex Pistols thing was? A charity golf tournament?

Naw, they wanted the MONEY, they got the MONEY, they pissed away the MONEY.

They sure sold YOU the swindle.

What's more punk than being the opposite of punk when everyone's punk?

"ever get the feeling you've been had"

sums up the punk movement perfectly.

What an amazingly awesome misunderstanding of what punk means. Nobody has been had. Certain bands just weren't what they appeared. That doesn't make every punk band a sham. Still the best music out there.

I saw a concert back in 1992(i think)

Opener: Blind Melon (before the bee) followed by LIVE (before Lightning Crash)
Headliners: PIL (J.R. after Sex Pistols) Followed by Big Audio Dynamite II (Mick Jones after the Clash)

/looking back, a very strange before\after thing going on there...

Marshmallow Jones 2007-12-31 02:52:01 PM
Hey Gimpols, I wen to that too. Saw that show in NY at the Ritz I think. It was the 1991 MTV '120 minutes' tour - back when the little cool music that MTV played was relegated until midnite-2am on sundays.

not a bad concert, I remember at the one I saw, BAD made a video for 'Innocent Child'.

When PIL was on some guy kept spitting at Johnny and he had him kicked out.

I used to troll the music boards with the exact same misconception, but a lot of more intelligent farkers have provided me with enough good information that most of these claims are false.

Besides, the whole punk thing isn't really where I will ever go back. The Clash, Ramones, Dead Kennedy's, Minor Threat, been there got the t-shirt.

I'm immersed in the techno scene now, and have been for nearly 20 years. But punk did spawn people like Jello Biafra and Ian McKaye. The only spokesman we have for our movement is the techno viking and that little prat Moby, who hasn't been representing us for well over a decade.

The Monkeees would like a word with you.

theflatline 2007-12-31 03:10:51 PM
Well,

I can say this. I have a friend who manages a venue, and I get to free shows there.

I am quickly approaching 40 and, having grown up in New Orleans, I got to see quite a few shows in my teen years.

Well, I go to a show after work with my girlfriend, and I am wearing khakis, a black shirt with a color, black shows. Did not have time to change.

I am standing behind the bar(closer to the hooch) and some dude eyeing my girl leans over and says"you little man, you want to hit the pit, looks like you do not know what music is all about"

At this point I was half in the bag, half a fifth of Captain Morgan in me and I grab him and say "yeah, well my arthritis is kiccking in, otherwise I would be out there, because you know when I was in the pit, it was The Dead Kennedys, Black, Flag, TSOL, Suicidal Tendencies" The kid looked at me, I thought he was about to throw a punch, and says "respect old dude, let me buy you a beer".

The first time I ever used the get off my lawn defense.

I also had a buddy of mine from Scotland, who grew up in the Punk scene in England with me, crazy old rugby player right out of trainspotting.

The band was four guys screaming and power cords. The "Pit", was a bucnh of hitler youth wanna bes windmilling and dry humping each other. It looked like retard day in the park.

The Violent Femmes got more punk street cred than what passes for "punk" these days.

oxymoron of the day

I will consede the point about the monkees as it is true. Does not change the point about the pistols, and that they are 10 gallons of suck in 5 gallon bag full of saftey pins and overpriced vintage clothes.

Punk does exsist, though if you see it and say thats punk, then it isnt punk.

craigdamage 2007-12-31 03:21:23 PM
Wasn't Johnny Rotten's last words as a Sex Pistol in the 70s:

"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" ??

He was quite aware of all the fabrication and hype.

Despite this,"Never Mind the Bollocks" is a pretty good record.

If it sucked so bad then why has it had a profound influence on many MANY heavy-metal,hardcore and punk bands since?

And when I say "influence" I am NOT talking image or fashion,I mean sound only.

"Pretty Vacant" and "Sub Mission" are really good songs.

Comparing the Monkees to the Sex Pistols is just wrong on so many levels. You don't like the Pistols fine, I certainly prefer loads of other stuff, but you can't deny their place in history. Since this is the billionth time this topic has come up, I doubt all the people who've posted more accurate and truthful versions of the story are going to, and I simply don't care enough about music I just don't listen to anymore.

As for the rest of your post, that's silly posturing.

Lighten up, Francis. Have a nice alcoholic beverage and enjoy the rest of the evening listening to whatever music turns you on. It's what I will be doing.

Happy New Year, Fark.

Try being an indie rocker. I've got Isaac Brock, Jeff Tweedy, and that shiathead from Trail of Dead.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2007-12-31 06:48:30 PM
I remember seeing/hearing on "The Filth and the Fury" that:

a) according to Sid, the 'original' punk fashions, the ones that they possibly helped pioneer (around 1976 or 77), were just whatever plain normal simple stuff you could get your hands on.
No leather. No studs. No chains, etc.
That would come later from the 'poser/follower' crowd and whatnot.

b) If John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) had his way, their debut album ["Nevermind the...."] would've sounded a lot different. Less sleek and straight-ahead rock/punk. More experimental stuff. [presumebly the kind of thing that he would later do with Public Image LTD.]

artman 2007-12-31 07:00:46 PM
John Lydon didn't sell out, Malcolm Mclaren did. Lydon took him to court to get the money that he (and the rest of the band) deserved. He won. After that he could do whatever he farking pleased. He could get any musician he wanted on his solo albums (Ginger Baker?).

If anything, he's using the Sex Pistols again but with the intentions they started with, to make money. I don't see anything wrong with that, Iggy Pop does it, why shouldn't they?

Early PiL is incredible. Sure by the time they were touring with BAD2, they were an ok singles band.

But Metal Box and the first album are classics.

And yes, if you want to know where U2 came from, then start here.

i was going to rip to shred with good arguments whoever was going to call him a sellout, which is a very misguided and badly informed opinion.

but after watching this .... i lost the will

/johnny was told all his life that he wouldnt amount to anything and wouldnt be good AT anything so whatever he achieve is a triumph against the condition he was pit against so kudos to him till the day he dies

At least we (the techno scene) still have the legend of Spiral Tribe. The most punk and anarchistic group the world has ever seen, or will ever see, since most of them are in prison now. It may not be G.G. Allin level, but come on, who on this earth wanted him, or wants another of him? Spiral Tribe at least had this awesome concept of destroying audio equipment with a combination of low and high frequencies in their records. They aren't much to listen to though. Better to go for some KLF or Altern8. Still love the JAMMs, and I miss that sort of foolishness a lot. Weird Al is AWESOME, and will always remain so, but he walks in as a comedy act. The KLF were serious tongue in cheek, and no one will ever replicate that.

FunkOut [TotalFark] 2007-12-31 07:32:08 PM
Lydon's voice alone was quite remarkable for the fact it was almost completely unmarketable. Razor blades to the eardrums. It's like a really stinky rare cheese : some people really like it and most people can't stand it.

punk, despite its alleged origins in an opposition to the wanking rock of the 70s has now devolved into a foil for empty suburban douches to one-up each other in an endless dance of 'authenticity vs. poser'. the myriad subgenres and niches insures that everyone gets to be 'real'.
punk was a product of the last gasp of the baby boom generation. it died about 15 minutes after it started and that was the whole point. you might just as well be talking about which flower children at woodstock were the most radical because its the same thing. go watch 'Zabriskie Point'.

And you're just defining what you describe as music. Not what everyone else does. And it's a very subjective as you will see.

No, punk is still alive, and it no longer adheres to any of "YOUR" rules. It's techno now. Not your Daft Punk, but true techno. Gritty, underground, and always real (or is that surreal?)

EDM Nazi? I somehow think you are missing the point. There are no boundaries in this music. I'm glad you love it, but, there's no room for rules or anything here.

I have feeling that you use name of single genre as name of whole EDM. You can't do it. Maybe I'm wrong

Daft Punk is pop. They make pop tunes. Can we meet on UGS or ST to debate this? Seriously, I just dropped Deathchant into my playlist, I DON'T FEEL CONSIDERATE RIGHT NOW.

I still occasionally listen to PIL.

I can't remember the last time I willingly listened to the Sex Pistols. They reached their saturation point with me ages ago.

I've still got the big poster of Johnny that was inside the first PIL album. That along with the large union jack poster for God Save The Queen. Had the original edition of Metal Box (in the film can), but taped it and eventually sold it.

From the bowels of Cleveland, Ohio came Cheetah Chrome and his Dead Boys. This punk was no poser- he could play the jebus out of his guitar and kick your azz at the same time.

I like Mr. Rotten, but my Cleveland homies were second to none.

That's an AWFUL song. How can you write something as amazing as "Rise," and then put your name next to that.

Eek.
