"Dolly Parton" and "music" are words not routinely associated with each other.

Dolly's not too bad, actually.

Indeed. She's in some songwriting hall of fame with the likes of Gershwin, et al. Doesn't mean I can stand listening to a decibel of it, but I have to respect her for being a constant and (apparently) worthwhile presence.

lots of Rush haters on FARK. maybe cause they suck.
not as bad as the Eagles, tho.

as far as bass players, I'd take Jack Bruce, The Ox, Jaco, John Patitucci, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Monk, Flea, Claypool, Bootsy, Lesh and dozens of others over Geddy.

Rush is releasing a live high def DVD in 2008 that was filmed in Rotterdam a few weeks ago.

Dolly and Willie are national treasures themselves, BTW. The Radiohead fans will be in here shortly, so I'll leave it to them to respond to the trolling subby.

suicide 2007-12-31 04:07:44 AM
The album will be released on CD and vinyl in Japan by Hostess on 26 December 2007,[2] in Australia on 29 December 2007 by Remote Control/XL[3] and in North America and Canada on 1 January 2008 by ATO imprint TBD Records and MapleMusic/Fontana, respectively.

Sounds like Nas is selling out, apparently his new shiat is "stylish" and Puffy is involved. What happened to hip-hop, it's become the new disco, well at least the mainstream has, no more lyrical original innovative shiat anymore, just the same shiat different album. Same applies for the modern mainstream rock that just pales in comparison to anything released pre-97.

Puffy/Diddy involvement = automatic epic fail. Not that Nas has been nearly as influential as he thinks he is, but I digress. Disco kept maturing, it was the marketplace that lost interest. Modern rap has devolved into something of a neo-minstrel celebration of ignorance and carelessness. History will look with an embarassed eye on the degradation of The CNN of the Streets into hyphy.

Oh, and 1997 is hardly a highwater mark in rock.

lexingtondisoro 2007-12-31 04:51:02 AM
Also, I forgot to mention that modern independent rap sounds exactly the same as the mainstream stuff to me.

Let the idiots have their mainstream bullshiat non-music. Sorry to hear there hasn't been any sufficiently awesome MAINSTREAM (read: stupidly mindless and popular, appealing to the masses at large) modern rock lately. Dig a little deeper, if you care at all. There's a huge world of talent out there if you listen for it.

Number41 2007-12-31 06:37:22 AM
No one's complaining about the Radiohead dig? Fine, I'll bite.

I'm not really into Radiohead's new stuff, but if you put out two albums as good as The Bends and OK Computer, you've got a lifetime pass on releasing whatever you want, as far as I'm concerned.

suicide 2007-12-31 06:41:18 AM
Shishkaboom: Dig a little deeper, if you care at all.

this. yeah, its unfortunate that everything being shoved down our throats sucks a lot, but if you take a little time and effort and give half a shiat it shouldnt take too long to find something decent. hell, you may even find a few bands and albums that completely alter your listening habits or change your life. keep an open mind, try something new and dont just buy music thats all over the radio or has a slick video.

suicide_koolaid777 2007-12-31 07:11:38 AM
I don't know what Rush or Radiohead ever did to bring about such hate, but then you talk up Dolly Parton? Willie Nelson?!?!? Ugh make me sick, i hate country with a passion. I'll even take a polka over a "good" country tune any day of the year. That crap is so regurgitated, just like 90% of anything else that is popular music. At least Rush and Radiohead have unique sounds and are comprised of great musicians.

Jacques Lestrap 2007-12-31 07:14:32 AM
Ladies and gentlemen, here they are, Dolly Parton!

/salesmen

Disgruntled Goat 2007-12-31 07:31:56 AM
Well, y'see, if I released a new disc right before the end of the year, say late December (for the physical version, not the download), I probably wouldn't be in a hurry to release another during the following 12 months.
So Radiohead is not a logical choice for inclusion in this headline.

salo2112 2007-12-31 07:36:10 AM
Country is mood music for people who fark their cousins. I piss on your Rush hate, subtard.

Meh. Apparently someone hasn't been listening for the past 33 1/2 years. I should have posted a group pic as Peart and Lifeson are just as good, but Geddy is the front man. I will say that the later half of their work does not match the first half by a good stretch (with spectacular exceptions like Roll the Bones), but when you get to our age, see if you can keep your raw edge.

DUDE! Country sucks, but who really cares?

2008 is going to be the best year in musical history because U2, Coldplay, Green Day, R.E.M., Counting Crows, The Fray (my sister's favorite), and Metallica all have albums for 2008.

Check Wikipedia, it's true.

As a longtime and rabid diehard Rush fan, I can actually understand the Rush haters. Rush isnt a middle-of-the-road band. Their sound and style is a love-it-or-hate-it type of thing.

They do warm my "soul", however.

/why do rock musicians have to have "soul"?

Ok i'm gonna bite,

If you truly love music you'll find something in most every genre you like.

If you truly love one genre of music you'll find something in that genre the mainstream ignores.

If you truly love music this is a golden age, with all the streaming, the downloading, the online retailers able to import those rare finds to your door. The music loving community has never had it so good.

But if you truly love music. Commercial radio is not for you.

make your love a hobby and discover there are plenty of tools. It's not fast-food and it's more fun to discover then be fed.

You can't group Willie in with mainstream country. He is unique. He plays just to play, a true entertainer.
Go see him live sometime and you'll see people of all ages and social standings there.

/Rush haters can suck it.

Props for Drive-By Truckers.

Girlfriend loves them to death.

I saw them a few months ago, and the show was great. Unfortunately, I had the Flu and was sick as a motherfarker for the entire show. I think we left early because I was about to pass out.

Ive NEVER seen a crowd so drunk though. I mean, puking-into-the-trash-cans constantly drunk. Crazy.

Ever heard of Living Legends, Andre Nickatina, or Jedi Mind Tricks, that is some underground shiat that still has heart, lyrics, and originality. I also said 97 as a year for all genres, cause early to mid 90s hip-hop and rock was really good compared to now, and that was hip-hops golden age. It all changed when bands like Limp Bizkit and people like Nelly got big. Even the gangsta rap meant something back then, now it's just a joke, I don't think most MCs know what they are talking about anymore. As long as they make a new dance and have a crazy beat, they will make bank. When Mims (of "this is Why I'm Hot" fame) can get away with saying "I can make a mill saying nothing on the track", it pisses me off. It should be more like "69 billion in the last 30 years spent on national defense, but folks still live in fear", that's farking hip-hop!!!

Oh, and I'll give The Mars Volta one more chance but Amputechture was godawful and Frances the Mute had its moments but was pretty frustrating overall.

At the Drive-In were f'in amazing and De-Loused is one of my favorite albums, is it really so damn hard to make another album like that instead of 15-minute psych-jazz freakouts?

Cedric and Omar are so damn full of themselves. One more chance.

Dolly and Willie have their fans, Rush and Radiohead have their fans...

Rush is planning on touring AGAIN after pulling in almost $30 Million and ranking as the #25 top grossing tour of 2007... not too shabby for 3 guys from Toronto.

mitchcumpstein 2007-12-31 08:54:48 PM
There seems to be a disjunct in farkers between music as an exercise in virtuosity and music as an expression of emotion. Three names mentioned in the headline utilize music as a medium to invoke emotion in the listener while one treates it like an olymic sport (I can do it better, faster, more technical, yada yada). Guesses?

AgentOrangeDrink 2007-12-31 09:42:36 PM
lexingtondisoro: Puffy/Diddy involvement = automatic epic fail.

American Gangster was pretty awesome and the Hitmen produced half of it. Do you really think Puffy does anything besides wave his hands in the air, say "change the drums," and then put his name on it?

More importantly, The Jesus and Mary Chain will put out a new album, and it will be the best album of the year. The new Black Mountain (which leaked already) is also awesome. But the live samples of the new Portishead material sounded like ass, I hope it's radically different when they record it.

Also, I heard Dr. Dre and Axl Rose are combining their albums to make....wait for it....Chinese Detoxracy. You can boo me now.
