Will this stop Texas' recent obsession with tolls?

Sounds about right.

But they could take the "express lanes" and save 12 minutes!

/I have no idea if those lanes are still there
//Left Austin in 1995 and haven't been back
///They were a LOT of fun during ice storms

On the upper deck.

...and they'll be stuck behind a turned-over 18 wheeler.
...and three cop cars will be idling on the shoulder watching a construction crew.
...and some asshole in a white F250 will be on my bumper talking on his cell phone.

The orangutan thread below just makes this headline twice as funny.

I've never understood why people bother with the upper deck.

Let's see...do I want to get on the two lanes of highway where there is NO chance of the traffic thinning out because no one can get on or off, or should take the two lanes where no one gets on (because there's no major businesses between MLK and 51st) and there's only people exiting?

Oh Jesus I hate Austin. I had the unfortunate experience of trying to drive through Austin on I-35 at 3 p.m. on a Friday. It took forrreeevvverrrrr. I drove through the other way on Sunday. I took the low road on Friday and the high road on Sunday when it splits for a little while, and Sunday's trip went much faster. Would it have helped to take the high road on Friday?

jiyuu_musouka: I've never understood why people bother with the upper deck.

So true.

I used to know a guy who refused to drive on the upper deck, because he was afraid of a freak accident causing him to drive off. We used to laugh and warn him of the freak accident being a car falling off the upper deck and landing on him.

/It shouldn't take 6 hours to get to Dallas from Austin -- half that time being in Austin.

Three weeks ago on a Friday it took me an hour and forty five minutes to to drive the seventeen miles from my home to work.

Of course my commute would take less time if you farkers stopped crashing in to each other.

Oh and stop trying to cross all lanes on 35 on foot. It doesn't end well.

Plus, all Semi-trucks need to make sure that all of their tires are secured to their trucks. (Left for work at 11:40pm that time, arrived at work around 1:30am)

I hate Austin traffic with the fiery passion of ten million inflamed hemorrhoids.

Wonder what this man's death will do to the plan to buy back 35 from the feds and turn it into a toll road?

Does this further prove that one church's claim that I-35 is the Lord's Highway?

I ... can't ... die ... 55!

Hopefully this poor bastard's death will help kibosh Perry's plan to convert all of Texas to toll roads.

I thought I read that TxDot was told it will not be able to buy back public roads paid for by Federal dollars.

Or you can come on up to the other end of I-35 and have a bridge collapse on you.

35 blows. Mopac blows slightly less.

Everyone should switch to Segways.

I'm really surprised they didn't find his car parked on some bridge in the middle of night with a typed note left under the wiper.

Don't fark with us, we'll give you a goddamn heart attack.

"It is inappropriate that the Transportation Commission should be intolerant of honest opinions that differ from their own. It is unacceptable that this Commission acts to retaliate against communities, organizations or their advocate because they seek to organize in opposition to a plan that is itself a matter of public discourse."

Austin roads were designed by drunken lemurs and built by crack crazed ferrets.

I used to have to walk 1 mile to and from work along 183 and crossing 183. Did it once when it was 115F. Luckly I was prepared. Shorts, t-short. Jug of ice water hanging from my neck. Still almost killed me.

I left Texas in 2004, and I went to Georgia, back to Arkansas where my dad lived, over to Iraq as a civilian contractor doing tech work, and am now in norther california.

Austin's cool, just gotta learn when and where not to drive.

/RR here, no not Dellionare

I-35 is bad almost any time of the day. I avoid it like the plague.

Freeballin 2007-12-31 10:12:38 AM
No winning anywhere in Austin, 360 isn't a cakewalk either, unless you love stopping at a light every 1/6th of a mile. Whoever designed this place deserves to be shot, and the people who agreed to the plan should be hung in the bad sense. I'm so tired of my 5 mile commute taking 15 minutes.. I'm also tired of the people who don't merge and continue ahead on the shoulder to pull in front of someone at the stoplight. They don't need red light cameras here in Austin, they need people driving on the shoulder cameras.

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2007-12-31 10:14:26 AM
Nosmo King: Austin's cool, just gotta learn when and where not to drive.

Yeah, like between 6:30 am and 10:00 am and then again from 3:30 pm - 7:00 pm M-F. (rush "hour")
Or between 7:00 pm - 3:30 am Saturday. (Drunken bar traffic)
Or between 8:00 am - 2:00 pm on Sunday. (Church/brunch traffic)

Plus you can never drive on I-35 at any time of day.
Or any of the 19 thousand streets that are under a constant state of construction.

So basically, you have about 5 hours a week when you won't be completely infuriated.

Another thing about Austin, no one uses blinkers, least of all the cops.
People are usually on cell phones and are always rude.

Hate!

My wife and took the SH 130 toll road last weekend, on the Sunday before Christmas as we were driving back to Dallas from Victoria. We cut across from 183 using 71 to get to the current south end.

In the middle of the day, the road was surprisingly empty. We never had a single slowdown (save for traffic on 71 getting to 130), and our NTTA TollTag worked like a charm. Saved quite a bit of time - worth the tolls, IMHO.

Once the south end connects with 183, 130 is going to be a sweet ride. For a while, at least. ^_^;

I drive to San Marcos every day along Old Stagecoach Rd., so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

7:30 AM rush hour.
Mind the deer.

I mentally flip a coin every day and decide If I want to risk I35 or 183&71 to get to/from work. It takes roughly 45min to an hour in regular traffic to get the 20 miles by I35, If theres an accident (few times a week) then add an hour. But 183/Ben White is 20 minutes for the 30 miles in good traffic...BUT if theres even 1 wreck..add a couple hours. I farking hate this commute shiite.
