I was interested until half a second into TFA when a huge floating ad hogged the whole screen, and I closed that window.

ManBearPig 2007-12-30 08:16:17 PM
What ads? Suckers need to get Firefox (or Opera) and Adblock. That's right! I said it!

I don't mind ads on fark. I know that's how Drew makes his living. I prefer them off in the margins out of the way for my viewing pleasure.

When they are forced into the content portion of the site blocking what I'm trying to read is when I become concerned. This type of thing is how you lose visitors.

discost00 2007-12-30 08:26:47 PM
that's £1750 quid!! Did anyone else before clicking on the article expect the snow to have melted, and the buyer to have sued?

Fake bidders on ebay should be jailed a day for each dollar/pound they bid with. The Farkers.

I would do a virus scan and run adblocker. I don't think what you have there is being generated by this site.

I do. I get the same damned thing on Fark, both at home and at work. Virus and malware protection is pretty good at both places.

Very, very nasty.

I take that back. I just got it too and also noticed an ad for the same company on the upper right hand side of the pade.

I'm sure once Drew finds out about it he will nuke it.

Please tell me I'm seeing things. Have you really stooped as low as to have ads float across the forums page? I'm going to chalk this up to advertisers pulling a fast one on you.

Use farkback ans send then that screen shot.

Definitely an ad on the site. I'm running linux so it isn't spy/ad-ware. I disabled Ad Block Pro and refreshed a few times and I got the ad floating across my screen.

/no, not really

The proceeds will go to Operation Enfant Soleil, a Quebec charity that supports children's hospitals in the province.

Please use Farkback when you see ads like the one described so they can be dealt with more quickly.

I'll leave the rest of the off-topic posts about it (mostly so I don't look silly for posting this message, of course), but now, back to your previously scheduled topic, and thanks for passing the information along!

No, more and more sites are using floating ads. It's truly annoying, but not so annoying that I'm going to bother installing firefox or whatever.

Doesn't the buyer know you can't trust the bank? The whole thing will probably succumb to the subprime market and melt down soon anyway

Lonestar [TotalFark] 2007-12-30 10:34:07 PM
Man thats a hell of a way to make money!

We had this guy selling the guitar hero 3 for the wii at 9k$, the selling of the tetes a claques memorabilia and then this guy selling snow. Ebay must be falling off their chairs, quebecquers make money with nothing.

That is, if the buyer pay up.

Now, I have a time machine to sell, anyone want in? Only 10m.

Meh. I haven't had a problem yet (which isn't worth much to anyone except me, but still). Obviously IE is not perfect but it's certainly better now than at any time in the past and it's patched fairly quickly when vulns come up. Firefox is by no means perfect. And what about that cookie thing with Google?

You know that's what that kid thought he was getting.

nice how eBay does not care if a Seller gets paid or not. of course eBay gets paid no matter what - makes even more every time a Buyer pays for an item using PayPal.

Sellers Beware: Always use Delivery Confirmation if shipping via Postal. Mention it in your Listing and have the additional expense paid by Buyer. Without D.C. a liar can claim they never received their Item and you are screwed. Especially if they paid thru PayPup. A receipt is nothing to them. You have to have a DC # for proof you shipped.

/don't have 2 good programs on your PC to keep out or clean off malware & adware? then you're ignorant. you'll be sorry 'when it's too late'.
//you're probably the same guy who does not have their PC automatically set calendar dates monthly so you can reset in case things go whacky on you. then yer screwed.

clevershark 2007-12-31 01:01:08 AM
When I went to visit my family in Abitibi there were a few jokes about that auction. Everyone there has a double driveway that has to be kept opened, because you have to drive everywhere. This year it's been snowing a lot, so a lot of houses in small villages have a 10ft high snowbank on the front lawn just from keeping the driveway open... and it's not quite January yet.

FYI: to go to where I was you start in Montreal and drive NNW for about 8 hours...

HomeGrownCone 2007-12-31 01:40:35 AM
This is ridiculous. The seller is clearly going to claim the charitable donation come tax season (too soon damnit)well the buyer who COULD have just donated the money and made the claim now gets snow.
The global learning and gifting initiative would like a word with you.

I install XP on a 3 gig HDD. I set all of my system folder locations to various RAID'd drives. It takes me about an hour or so to get back up and running should the need arise. (btw I use Firefox w/ Adaware & NOSCRIPT!!) It has been over a year since I reformatted!)
