OK, I read the headline. Then I read the article. Then I read the headline again, just to see if I might have missed some hidden joke or other such subtlety. And I think I've come to the conclusion that this just doesn't make any sense.

Easily resolved. I say dump them somewhere at random on the mountainside and let them wait for the responders to find them. The rescue workers get valuable training, and they learn not to be dumbass corpsicles.

The Asshole Guy 2007-12-30 05:25:31 PM
Good thing they where not buried in the snow. Most people don't survive 5hrs buried in the stuff.

Lesson: when buying high-tech rescue or communications gear, have a passing understanding of how it works before using it, or leave it at home. Also, stop being a dumbass.

I could really use Rescue Bacon if I ever get in an accident.

Nothing eases people from fear and injuries like Rescue Bacon!

I was glad to see Ham Radio mentioned in the article. people don't realize how useful having a group of people that play with radio signals as a hobby really is. In fact there is an actual sport that some of us do called "Fox Hunting", basically looking for a transmitter that is beaconing using our own receiving equipment to track it down with.

I also practice a completely different version of "Fox Hunting" at bars, supermarkets, Beaches and various other public locations.

I think there should be a rule that if a journalist ever has a typo that, for example, makes "beacon" into "bacon," they just have to roll with it and abandon the original article and start talking about bacon.

1. Ham radio people are teh awesome... not my thing, but they are very useful in some situations.

2. I'm glad the system works.

3. I'm concerned that the satellite locator was so far off with the first estimate... had it been an actual emergency, sending people to the wrong mountain could have cost critical time.

4. Accidents and misunderstandings happen, it seems better training is needed.

5. as is Bacon for all of the volunteers.

firefly212: I'm concerned that the satellite locator was so far off with the first estimate... had it been an actual emergency, sending people to the wrong mountain could have cost critical time.

Many beacons these days have an integral GPS receiver, so they can transmit their precise location to the satellites, rather than waiting a few satellite passes to zero in their location (as the older model beacons required).

If one is indoors, it's not unreasonable to think that the GPS receiver would not be able to accurately determine its location. If it was one of the older, non-GPS beacons, the signal may have gotten garbled traveling through the building or reflecting off of other buildings in the area. They're not exactly meant to be used in built-up areas.

SomeoneDumb 2007-12-30 06:02:53 PM
If they had bacon, they wouldn't need any rescuing.

There were six of 'em, though, so it makes sense to think of Kevin.

Bacon is one of the greatest creations of all time. If Jews and Muslims could eat bacon there would be peace in the middle east.

//Bacon akbar!

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2007-12-30 06:17:28 PM
I already started making dinner but there's still time to add bacon.

On the subject of the article, there was a story recently about rescue crews being called to a junkyard where an emergency locator beacon was activated when the boat containing it was crushed.

Joshg 2007-12-30 06:17:58 PM
Well, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. At the least it exposed some problems that would have made for a bad situation had the emergency been real.

G2V 2007-12-30 06:31:15 PM
Considering the rescue beacon didn't give the correct location, maybe they should give these guys some credit for getting the thing looked into before someone in an emergency dies while rescue crews go to the wrong mountain, even if it was accidental aid.

Doomed 2007-12-30 06:31:35 PM
But Oberhofer said the first set of coordinates received from the beacon were incorrect. As a result, a search and rescue team was dispatched to Castle Mountain to search for the beacon.

Bets on the happenstance the people monitoring the signal checked the GPS coordinates, saw it was in a built-up area, said something along the lines of 'Nah, this can't be right... what's the nearest place there could be trouble? Let us check our trusty map,' and went there instead?

In my work in the Civil Air patrol, we've hunted down rescue beacons all over the place.

Once a company was reconditioning emergency liferaft kits for the airlines, and the beacon they pulled out of one kit was cracked and damaged, so they tossed it in the trash. Somebody later dumped something on top of it and unknowingly set it off.

We get a call that the satellite was picking up a distress signal in the Trenton NJ area. We launch an aircraft, it circles around a particularly rough neighborhood, locating the signal. We're like, WTF? If an aircraft crashed in Trenton, somebody would have called. The signal was coming from Injun country, if ya know what I mean. Mebbe they were covering it up, afterall, scrap aluminum can get some bucks, then there's all those expensive radios and electrical gizmos on the plane....

We send in our ground team at two in the morning, with police escort, the locals eyeing us suspiciously as we walk down the street holding homing antennas.

We follow the signal to the company, call the manager, who comes down at three in the morning, we get in, wander around until we find the signal coming from a trash dumpster. One of the cadets volunteers to dumpster dive, and finds the beacon. We then got the fark out of Dodge.

I stopped working on my ham radio license the instant I realized there was no actual ham involved. I bought a hamster instead. I was mislead on that one, too.
