Pfffft. The ones on Mars are better.

No Lochness Monster, no Big Bad Wolf ? I reject this list.

I came here to whine about the lack of rides from Alton Towers, but then I RTFA and saw 1.

Never ride in the front car of the Millennium Force at night. If I were the screaming type, I probably would have eaten quite a few bugs.

Teambaylagoon, I've been there and done that. Those coasters were freakin' awesome in the late 80's/early 90's, but the limit has been pushed past them. You and I still have our nostalgia.

/loved the Busch Gardens tour guide who called it "The Big Bad Woof"

No shiat. Modern steel coasters are great but there is nothing like a wooden wonder. Steel doesn't give and let you enjoy the lateral movement of the rails.

Eat More Possum: Steel doesn't give and let you enjoy the lateral movement of the rails.

But steel allows me to walk upright the next day. I can't do the wooden coasters.... :(

but I have ridden on 3 of these..... the 2 at cedar point and the one in texas.

Maybe I need to go to japan.....

westbound pachyderm 2007-12-30 02:53:09 PM
I was glad to see at least one contender from Cedar Point.

I rode Apollo's Chariot the day after that happened and everyone on the ride yelled 'Fabio' instead of screaming normally. :D

I've heard good things about Kingda Ka, and this article almost makes me want to take the alleged hop-skip-and-a-jump to that ghetto shiat-hole that is Six Flags Great Adventure.

Terrx [TotalFark] 2007-12-30 02:58:35 PM
Kingda Ka is never farking running when I end up at Great Adventure.

Shadow Blasko 2007-12-30 02:59:19 PM
This list totally fails without the inclusion on ONE decent wooden coaster.

Any inclusive list of best coasters with The Beast is wrong. Period.

I know its not a rollercoaster, but I heard there's a Superman ride somewhere that will sweep you off your feet.

I remember as a little kid seeing commercials for Kennywood near Pittsburgh, advertising themselves as 'The Roller Coaster Capitol of the World'.

Here, not even a mention.

kyuzokai 2007-12-30 03:02:21 PM
Dodonpa is insane: fastest acceleration in the world and it sure felt like it. I thought my heart was going to stop. One of the girls in our group just sat and cried for about 20 minutes after the ride was over.

I'll put it another way... it was so good, I had to buy the over-priced T-shirt in the gift-shop afterwards.

bullfrog315 2007-12-30 03:02:34 PM
kingda ka is nothing like it's pumped up to be. understandably, it is often under maintenance so its a crapshoot on whether its open on a given day. but by no means is it the best coaster in the world. its great to experience it,especially front row, but it is really meh.

personally, i think Nitro (also in Great Adventure) is a better all-around ride but thats me.

Inchoate 2007-12-30 03:05:15 PM
Kennywood's woodens are good, at least. The Steel Phantom and its successor always left me just short of concussed, and not in a good way.

The Grinch 2007-12-30 03:05:36 PM
Kingda Ka is nuts, definitely worthy of a spot on that list. Problem is, Great Adventure is pretty much the slum theme park of NJ, AND half the time it's down for repairs, AND you can ride Nitro three times for the same amount of time spent in line.

My personal favorite coaster is the Great White at Wildwood. Yes, it's wooden. Still kickass. Try it, if you ever get lucky enough to visit the last nice place in New Jersey.

Big +1 to Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster. Cedar Point is, by far, the best coaster park I have ever experienced. Anyone who considers themselves a roller coaster aficionado and hasn't been there is doing themselves a huge disservice.

"Steel Dragon 2000: What could cause the normally polite and somewhat restrained Japanese to squeal and scream in public?"

Restrained? Really? Those games shows I catch occasionally must not really be from Japan then.

If that is the Georgia Cyclone in Atlanta, it's the scariest ride I've ever been on. Damn thing creaks and shakes the whole time, thought it was gonna fall apart.

Alpengeist? Griffon?

/lives within walking distance of BG
//Smells the brewery right now

btw, the best wooden coaster is the Grizzly, at Kings Dominion. Hands down.

criscokkat 2007-12-30 03:19:14 PM
Bogus list that's beenmaking the rounds.Itneeds a few good Wooden coasters to even be taken seriously. Voyager at Holiday World (check out the video of a REAL coaster) is a good example, but even something like the aforementioned Cyclone which still delivers a kickass ride 80 something years later.

There's also El Toro which is built right next to the #1 ride on that list, Kingda Ka - and a much better ride in my opinion. Here's a Link to a POV video of that ride.

If this was a top ten *steel* list, it wouldn't be so bad...

I saw a Youtube video of it, didn't look too crazy, but think I'll check it out when I'm there in a few weeks (staying at Caesar's, pretty close to NYNY). How are the lines?

Was in Disney a few months ago, sat up front on Space Mountain...felt like my head was gonna get lopped off, that's what makes a good coaster great, the feeling of cheating death. I know Space Mountain is far from being the best coaster, but when it makes you feel like you're gonna die, that's what its all aboot.

I have a ton of fond memories of The Grizzly.

KD is pretty much a hole, but its a damn fine ride.

Being from the Pittsburgh area, I was depressed not seeing any from K-wood. Thunderbolt is my favorite roller coaster, hands down. Nothin beats that hunk of wood.

Boris S. Wort [TotalFark] 2007-12-30 03:26:11 PM
I dunno about the new breed of roller coasters. They're fun and thrilling n'all, but they lack the fear of death aspect that a rickety old wooden one can give you...

www.themeparkreview.com

Steezy 2007-12-30 03:26:51 PM
Just curious, what is the difference between wood and steel rollercoasters? Kinda thought it was just all about how fast you go and how far you drop.

Jgok [TotalFark] 2007-12-30 03:27:21 PM
FTA: "The further you venture from a soft, comfortable ride the thrillseeker gets the more fun is to be experienced."

Wow, you just have to love the writing ability of these journalists...

Been a long time since I've done rollercoasters, but I love the ones that start up through magnetic induction. I hate getting throw, tossed, and banged around during the ride... I just want the g-forces and centripetal force, not the contusions all over my brainpan.

Once, a while back at King's Dominion in VA, I rode one coaster that was inside, old, and I swear the tracks were coming apart. I had a stud earring in one ear, and by the time I got off that coaster, there were dozens of tiny holes pocked in the flesh behind my earlobe. Not fun.

Ghostbox 2007-12-30 03:29:13 PM
if Cedar POint wasn't on this list I would have spit on it. But it is...so I tip my hat to it.

Best one I have ever been on:

Kumba at Busch Gardens Tampa.

Runner-up:

Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

/Not sure if those rides are still around.
//Visited those parks back in the early 90's.

No wood coasters? Where's the Mean Streak? The Gemini?

Hell, I cut my teeth on those. Mean Streak 6 times after 4 chili dogs makes the Magnum seem like nothing.

oreja 2007-12-30 03:32:11 PM
First time I realized I was getting old was the last time I was at Six Flags in Georgia. One ride on the coaster there and I was hurting for hours afterwards. Damn those things throw you around and it just wasn't fun.

"but I love the ones that start up through magnetic induction"... Don't think I ever been on one of those but sounds more my speed now.

Guelph35: Not impressed.

Someone needs to build an actual LOLlercoaster. And for children who are too small to ride the LOLlercoaster, one of those kiddie ROFLcopter rides.

Rat [TotalFark] 2007-12-30 03:32:47 PM
I'm kinda partial to the Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. I took the maiden voyage on it opening day, ya know, before they tamed the tallest/fastest wooden rollercoaster part. Sure, I needed to see an spine surgeon afterwards, but that was just 'understood'.
