No problem, just strap a twenty on his head and wish him the best of luck. (I think that was Ron White)

At first I thought the headline said "Bring bong".

That would be much more important than a baby.

Kate McCallister: Did you lock up?
Peter McCallister: Yeah.
Kate McCallister: Did you close the garage?
Peter McCallister: That's it. I forgot to close the garage. That's it.
[She sits back. After a pause:]
Kate McCallister: No, that's not it.
Peter McCallister: Well what else could we be forgetting?
[She sits back again; after an even longer pause, she jumps upright]
Kate McCallister: KEVIN!

I was once at a Walmart in the frozen foods isle when a woman waived me over and said that someone had left their baby in the cart. I thought she was joking at first because the infant looked like a babydoll because it was asleep and not moving. I stayed with the infant while the woman went to get an employee to handle the situation.

I'd have totally bought that kid. With Walmart's always low prices and their return policy being what it is, you could have totally parted him out for unnecessary accessories like a kidney, corneas, etc., and still returned him for full purchase price. You really missed out on a great deal.

The "bing bong" is my favourite part about the headline.

It sounds like they made a "door closing" sound by whacking cartoon characters offside the head.

A few years back when I lived in Jacksonville I heard someone knocking at 2 AM, I opened the door to find my neighbors 5 year old standing there holding a blanket. He looked up at me, said "they left me in the car, then walked past me and curled up on my couch and went to sleep. I went next door to find out what the heck was going on, I knocked for about 5 minutes before his mom came to the door red eyed and pissed looking. When I told her where her son was she got a look of horror on her face and ran over to get him.
It seems her and her husband had missed their flight back from somewhere in Michigan and had rented a car for a marathon drive to get back before their vacation was over, had arrived at midnight bleary eyed with the kid asleep in his booster chair, they left him while they unpacked the luggage then forgot he was out there, when he woke up he couldn't knock loud enough to wake em so he came over to my place to crash till they remembered him.

The article says that the reason the parents left the kid behind was that they "each thought the other was carrying the child". My question is, who carried the child to the train station in the first place? Why would they then set the baby down and simply assume that the other parent picked the child up? If I was carrying the baby, and set the baby down for a second, you can damn well be sure that I would then be the one who would pick them back up. The only reason I wouldn't is if my wife were to specifically tell me that they were going to take the baby, and even then, I would double check to make sure they did.

I am willing to bet what happened here is that the parents started to think of carrying the baby as a "chore" that had to be done, and they were both trying to pass it off to the other parent because they were "tired of having to carry the baby". It's easy to forget the child if you are actively trying to avoid being responsible for it.

I know a couple who have a baby. One of the things I hear them say to each other that makes me cringe is "it's *your* turn". This isn't said in a playful or nice way either. It is said in a cranky "I don't want to do it, *you* do it" tone of voice. I realize that taking care of a baby is hard work, and they should both be working together on this, but to keep passing responsibility for the baby back and forth like that as if it is the same as being responsible for taking out the garbage or some other undesirable household chore makes me ill. The baby should not be a "hot potato" that you are trying to constantly pass off to the other parent.

Let's not be *too* hard on the parents, please. I would think the public embarassment will be more than enough punishment. This is going to be hashed and re-hashed in their social circle for years.

My dad left me at the family business when I was a few weeks old. Came back to find me still sleeping peacefully. (Whaddaya know, even the most loving parents aren't perfect!)

I don't doubt they love their baby.

Whether they will be able to locate it over time is my worry.

(Once watched someone search through all the laundry on her bed and on the floor of her room for her 5 day old infant - she found him, he's 13 now, and quite the prodigy at WoW).

astoreth 2007-12-30 04:53:19 PM
Sure, they forgot the baby.

It happens.

It is not a crime.

People are fallible and screw up from time to time.

Sometimes royally.

We should live in a society where if you screw up, people are there to look out for you.

Instead, we live in a society where if you screw up, people want to nail your farking arse to the wall.

People need to get over their holier than thou attitudes and stop creating a society where everytime someone is an idiot, they go to jail.

I am very pleased that the police in this case didn't file charges. It is as it should be.

I am sure the people feel stupid enough without further punishment.

This. Every parent has had this experience or a very close call...bleary-eyed, diaper-brained, milk-stained, and very, very tired....

Catsmeow 2007-12-30 09:58:11 PM
When two (or more) people share the responsibility, and are tired and don't have a clear system between them for making it clear who is supposed to be in charge at a particular time, this can easily happen. Good thing the kid wasn't old enough to toddle into trouble in the short time he was unsupervised.

Once, my parents left my brother at church for like 2 hours. We went to a restaurant and had sat down to eat when they realized it.

People overreact to people losing their kids...Why do you give a fark anyway? It's their kid. If the kid gets killed, just chalk it up to Darwinism...on the parents behalf....

/hates kids
