Ok...as always, genetics load the gun, environment pulls the trigger. I work with people with eating disorders, and there are many, many causes. Most of it is screwed up coping skills. It can also be a learned behavior (imagine that, a child with parents with an eating disorder will develop an eating disorder.)

Other then that, I think it's a fascinating disorder, but thats just me

"Women are ten times more likely to develop anorexia than men and this goes a long way to explaining why" - TFA

Maybe it's because women are typically 10x fatter then men?

Seriously tho, I'm a recovered male anorexic, straight, so either I'm an exception or I'm a lot gayer then I previously thought.

Tho my mother has an eating disorder too...

moth Male anorexia is not as uncommon as it was in the past, either that or more guys are coming forward and seeking treatment. Where I work, there have been many guys, gay and straight with some kind of eating disorders. Congrats on your recovery.

It was pretty clear that Karen & Richard blamed their mother for hers.

If only she'd shared a sandwich with Mama Cass, we'd still have both of them.

That was a very funny joke....25 years ago but it has since been proven that Mama Cass died of a heart attack and not choked on a ham sandwich.

I didn't blame my mom when I went from 140lbs to 94lbs in 2 months, and I didn't blame her when she sat me down and forced me to eat a bowl of chili.

i had a friend (guy) who was acting anorexic for while. and we would fark with him and while he would seldom eat we would rag on him, like," man are you eating all that?" or " can i have some" .

It's nature AND nurture, like being influenced by your mom's eating disorder tendencies which eventually focus on you at some point. I can remember my mom wanting herself and ME to be skinny when she was reuniting with an old friend, and feeling frustrated that I was taking on her "shape" because of puberty.

Anyhoo, long story short, I know now that an eating disorder is about control, and usually co-exists with depression or anxiety, for people who generally don't act out. There you have the genetics.

I dunno why but I've always felt an unhealthy amount of animosity towards other anorexics and most especially towards other ppl who've gotten past it.

But I think part of it is the hell I went through compared to the cake walk that is normally anorexia. Case in point w/the chili girl here--sorry to say, if a bowl of f'n chili fixed your problem it wasn't anorexia. Ppl make jokes (self included) about it or just don't plum understand it w/stupid comments like "just eat more".

Btw, once I got the "just eat more" phase it took over 3 months of eating before I was able to actually "just eat more". Before then I dunno if it would've been possible alone. The blackouts made life hard enough to function as it was, add in massive drug use and yah..."just eat more" is pretty farkin stupid.

Thanks...I actually feel better now ppl.

And no, you aren't supposed to feel sorry for someone who doesn't eat. You should point at them, chuckle, and walk off. They won't be able to eat for two days.

/Rant

Okay, and now for a serioius and non-assholish response, it should be pointed out that anorexia nervosa involves a chemical imbalance. If a person has an overabundance of serotonin, their body will tell them that they are full much earlier than they really are, and eating past that point is unpleasant for them as they have to fight past all their body's natural defenses against overstuffing oneself.

As someone who once struggled through clinical depression (where I didn't have enough serotonin), I strongly sympathize with people who have to deal with an imbalance on the other end of the spectrum. It's one thing to mentally steel yourself to act against what you logically realize doesn't make sense, but it's quite another to actually change your behavior against ingrained survival-related impulses.

Glad to hear you are recovered. I knew a man (straight, married, kids etc) who died from complications from Anorexia nervosa. His family and friends kept asking why??? Awful time for us all.

I sympathise with those who've posted with sensible responses.

My Aunt died of anorexia in 1976. It was an early diagnosed case, especially as this was in Dublin in the 70's (if you don't get that, you've no idea). She'd cook a four course meal for the family and, for herself, sit down to a boiled egg.

My problem was that my parents emigrated before that to a country that had no idea.

I was six when my aunt died. I spent YEARS at the dinner table being told that if I didn't eat everything on my plate, my stomach would close up and I'd die (no, no exageraton!) because I couldn't eat any more food ever "just like my Aunty ----"

Erm ... pick the kid with the weight problem ....

140 is pretty porky for 5'3". I'm the same height, and I've been 95lbs before- it's on the skinnier side of healthy, but it's not bad.

Anyway, you missed the point. It's not like women have control over their oestrogen levels during fetal development, so you can't blame them anyway. (I would blame her for the chili though, chili is gross).

your right, I wasn't sick, I was perfectly ok! You know my life better than I do, that's amazing!

I said IF she hadn't, I WOULD have been very sick, o knowledgabe one. And 94 was very underweight, my gyno confirmed that thanks.

I still don't understand why I'm supposed to feel bad for people who don't want to eat.

Presumably because you are capable of understanding it is normal to eat. Not everyone has this knowledge, it seems, and as has been said earlier in this thread, a very important factor is what your environment teaches you. Then there's the cases who simply keep perceiving themselves as fat, which is even more interesting. There's often a bigger issue at work than "not eating".

Um, no. Looking at BMIs (not perfect measure, but decent for most people who aren't weightlifters) 140 is on the upper range of healthy for that height. 95 is definitely underweight. And whatever your height, going from 140 to 95 in 2 months is definitely unhealthy.
