Well he's no Stanley Jordan but that's an interesting gizmo he's playing.

Meh.

Should I be impressed Brubeck used both hands on the piano?

There's another cool TF link just after this with some guy playing the Star Wars Cantina theme on a Chapman Stick. Potential for a funky fret-only trifecta......

I can't do it, nor do I try to make movies of me failing - neither should he.

I can play Take Five on a regular 6-string. Does that count?

Hack Patooey 2007-12-29 10:22:02 AM
Meh, I could do that if I had that guitar.

and talent

Logweasel 2007-12-29 10:40:27 AM
I had a Chapman Stick for a couple of months, and while the bass notes always sounded awesome, the treble is anemic. I guess I just prefer plectrums to tappy-tappy.

Bunch of no talent hacks posting above.

This is VERY cool and all your biatching and sniping doesnt change it.

When you THINK you can do better, film it, post it and let us judge.

Farking azzhats.

It's neat. Musically not very interesting, but being able to actually do that is a neat trick.

Thanks for providing today's example of a logical fallacy. My hearing tells me that this performance was not good, not my playing.

purvisxiii 2007-12-29 12:44:34 PM
That 5/4 signature sure did seem to drift into 4/4 from time to time. Learning how to play the notes is good for a student recital, but this performance is like expired ex-lax.

/didn't move me

So let me get your logic here straight...
Hitler (Everyone loves a Hitler comparsion!) managed to start a World War, kill 6 million Jews and make the name Adolf useless for the coming eternity as a childs name...
Now I for one could Never do that..
Should I praise him because he managed?

Personally, I dont really min the whole WW2, I was quite un-alive.
Others however I imagine aren't That happy about it, because, well, let's just put it like this: Hitlers idea might've looked good in his head.. "Hey let's make mankind the best it can be" .. but.. Well,
it involved genocide and stuff.
Am I not entitled to say that it was HORRIBLE.. Because I can't do it myself?

You might've missed it during your semi-growing period, but you don't have to be able to do something to be able to judge others on it.

...And a thread about Dave Brubeck's masterpiece being played on a 14 string guitar with no plectrum/strumming was Godwinned within 20 posts.

Only on Fark.

Anyone else get the ad for St. Jude Children's Hospital with Reggie Bush sitting next to Verne Troyer?

It would be cooler if he wasn't full of himself while playing it.

berniex [TotalFark] 2007-12-29 02:21:02 PM
I prefer that other 2-handed tapping instrument - the piano.

If you close your eyes, it sounds just like a mediocre guitar duet.

From a novelty standpoint - great ! From a musical standpoint - not so much.

TheHopeDiamond 2007-12-29 02:30:16 PM
A much more musical performance than the Cantina abortion in the other thread.

Still not perfect, note-wise though. I tend to agree with Berniex.

MickCollins 2007-12-29 02:35:05 PM
All you people ripping this guy are utter assholes. The skill it takes to play those strings with two hands is amazing. I have no doubt you assholes never, ever played an instrument other than the 3 inch cock in your pants.

berniex [TotalFark] 2007-12-29 02:49:11 PM
MickCollins - Actually, as a trained musician myself, I have observed that those who are critical of musical performances on Fark are usually also trained musicians, because they are better suited to make such critical judgements.

While it no doubt took many, many hours to master the skill to play such a novel instrument, it still does not change the fact that, from a musical standpoint, it was a mediocre performance.

And no, I'm not going to post a vid of myself playing. That also would not change the fact that this was a mediocre musical performance.

on strings two hands is amazing even though its standard for keys?

Could I do it? Hell, could I not only fark up a couple of notes, I could fark up all of them.

Yes, this is impressive, but let's see him play a complicated piece on one neck.

Stanley Jordan plays Eleanor Rigby (new window)

Looks like Blade plays near me sometimes, may have to go grab a look, definitely entertaining.

mfaby 2007-12-29 04:17:23 PM
Sooooo the guy doesnt play it perfectly and THAT gives you a reason to want him to DIAF?

Like I said, when YOU can do better let me know.

Enuratique 2007-12-29 05:07:41 PM
Double-Neck Guitar Hero.

/WANT!

berniex [TotalFark] 2007-12-29 05:08:56 PM
mfaby - Who said he should "DIAF" ?

Why do you overreact to some polite criticism ?

It was mediocre. Sorry, but it was.

TheHopeDiamond 2007-12-29 05:53:28 PM
Yep, I play guitar, bass, drums, concert percussion, and a little keyboard.

This guy did better than the other dope; at least he never stumbled off-time like the hippie did. However, no performance is "good" if there are glitches in the melody.

To quote the jazz musicians of old, they "Dropped some clams in the jams".

TheHopeDiamond 2007-12-29 05:56:34 PM
Wow. Now that Stanley Jordan piece is GOOD.

lsc78 2007-12-29 07:13:06 PM
C-- Would not watch again.

dmax 2007-12-29 09:04:09 PM
I'm pretty sure that he's playing a Warr Guitar (new window), instead of a Chapman Stick.

And, I'll admit that it was MUCH more talented than I am - and yet I didn't find the performance particularly engrossing.

Don Piano 2007-12-29 10:00:57 PM
Wow- never knew Chelsea Clinton had such talent!

trippdogg 2007-12-29 11:28:41 PM
If you're going to pull off a jazz standard nowadays you're going to need to come up with something more than a weird guitar and "close enough" musicianship. Only a hardcore guitar wannabe would see this as anything but lame.

Good enough for a wedding reception, but only if it's at least your third marriage...

Goldsfool 2007-12-29 11:36:23 PM
I can do that. Give me two or four months and I could probably do it better.

/brag

magical_mystery_meat 2007-12-30 01:19:18 AM
the hard part of stuff like that is the hand independence. It's hard to raise your perception of what you're playing up to the level where you just hear it and your hands work automatically like this guy has.

Take Five 2007-12-30 01:53:09 AM
Yeah, I can do it on the piano. And I always fark up a couple notes; so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

musicky 2007-12-30 03:46:25 AM
Those triplets need to be sixteenth notes. Sucka needs to git hisself a lead-sheet.

DoctorCal 2007-12-30 10:01:34 AM
Ok. This fellow is an accomplished musician, and should be applauded as such. Clearly, there are shortcomings in his execution of this classic, revered piece, but I'm not going to bag on him because of that.

I would like to share some performances by stick players that I think highly of who are pretty unknown to the mainstream.

Tom Griesgraber playing a solo version of one of his own compositions,

Bert Lams & Tom Griesgraber playing a classical duet that shows off their chops pretty well

Greg Howard and his band performing their piece "Still Water"

Greg Howard solo performance of "Guitarresque" at the 2003 Montreal Jazz Festival.

gwowen 2007-12-30 10:44:38 AM
Handy rule of thumb: if you pretend its a trio or quartet or big band making that exact same noise, does it still sound like good music?

If the answer's "No", then its not good music, its just stunt musicianship. The quality of a piece of music is not a function of how many people it takes to make it.

Dead Sexy Albino:

Well, the two instruments are just alike, after all!

Oh, wait, except for that bit about having to press harder on guitar. And being more careful about how you press. That other bit about each note not being equidistant to each other, like on a piano - well, there's that small problem. Then the differences in feel from the treble strings to the bass...

But yeah, other than that, it's no more amazing than playing it on piano.

JohnnyDanger 2007-12-30 06:01:20 PM
I think I'd rather listen to a HS jazz band perform it than hear some Guitar Grimoire enthusiast flail through it.

berklee 2007-12-30 06:21:35 PM
Actually, I'm thinking it's a Moebius Megatar...

Slamguy 2007-12-31 12:08:20 PM
Being able to play an instrument well and/or in a unique way doesn't make you a good musician, it makes you a good guitarist/pianist/whatever. Just being able to "work" an instrument isn't impressive. It might take loads of study and practice, but unless you're creating something interesting, you're just a circus freak. There are MANY wonderful musicians out there still playing the guitar the conventional way and manage to create unique pieces of music.

Example: playing fast, accurate classical or flamenco tremolo is quite difficult, but listening to someone use that technique to play those same two notes over and over isn't impressive.

Musical instruments and techniques are just tools for creating music. Don't worship the tools. Worship the music.
