When a nuclear power is on the verge of civil war, Washington is the last place I want Bush to be.

Why, don't they have enough problems over there ?

Maybe if the Ukranian legislature was trying to hastily pass an unconstitutional statute to interfere in the court proceedings surrounding health care for a vegetable in a hospital he'd get off his butt.

Wanebo: Does subby rush back to work just because the fry cooker is low on oil?

If the fry cooker is going to take down the neighborhood, yeah, I might drop by and flip the switch.

Wanebo: Does subby rush back to work just because the fry cooker is low on oil?

I'm not the submitter, but if I manage the place and they're low on oil in the deep fryer, I'd get my ass down to the restaurant and take care of business because... A: Deep fried foods are the shiat... and B: It's my job.

In Bush's case, the only reason I agree with your point is that I think Bush is not only incompetent, but inept at anything having to do with anything concerning the Middle East. In other words, it's safer for everyone involved if Bush remains on vacation...

Durendal [TotalFark] 2007-12-28 08:06:01 PM
Because he certainly can't do anything from Texas. Really, there are plenty of legit reasons to bash the guy, but I think in the modern era of instant communication, he could still manage just fine from where he is, or as fine as that buffoon can manage.

That, and Bush is not the president of Pakistan.

Vacation
Meant to be spent alone

The longer he's on vacation, the less he can screw up. Yeah, I'm concerned about this crisis... but I'd rather he not be.

GingerGirl 2007-12-28 09:09:06 PM
Yes, because, of course, a president can only do work while sitting in the Whitehouse. They dont do any work anywhere else, no meetings, no communication, dont have phones, cant have meetings...yup...if the president isnt in the oval office he isnt allowed to do any work.....

Guess who gave Pakistan and Indiastan the nuke capability?? ?

Canadah.

/According to all the canadian commercials about loving the brown people who take all the call support jobs and farm field positions.
//Let Pakistan and Indiastan nuke each other. Minor inconvenience here anyways.

Actually, it's at times like this that I feel kinda sorry for Condi and George.

Condi: We got Bhutto onboard with the plan. Pakistan is 'lookin gooood!'

Bush: Excellent

Condi:
oops...

Bush: What, what's the problem now?

Condi: I'll call you back.

/...but somebodies got to do it

Does subby really think that he's out of contact with his advisers? I'm pretty sure that the government can afford to fly them to Texas to brief him, or maybe set up a video conference. Is there something magical about DC that makes decisions made there better than anywhere else?

I actually want him to be in the line of fire -- from the media, his constituency, maybe even the dangerous situations he's put the citizens and military personnel of this country in -- and not hiding out on his ranch.

/submitter hates freedom

FriarTuck 2007-12-28 09:13:15 PM
Meh, it's not like he's spending his days playing lawn darts or something. He's at Crawford, it's not a vacation.

Many US Presidents have long been lukewarm on living in the White House itself and many presidents have chosen to live at their family mansions, especially during second terms.

Plus it does send a subtle message: The pakistan troubles are a concern, but not concerning enough to rush up to Washington DC.

This is also an old executive trick in times of actual crisis. The World doesn't like to see the president scrambling to get to DC ASAP.

/I don't like Bush but I don't really see this as an issue.
//plus, the more time he spends at Crawford the more low profile he is in DC during his lame duck times.

ashikahotchu 2007-12-28 09:13:27 PM
Bush can sign off on any plan his corporate overlords come up with for him no matter where he is—it's worked for him for the last seven years, why change now?

Get Lost: Guess who gave Pakistan and Indiastan the nuke capability?? ?

"Indiastan" implies that India is a Muslim nation, which is definitely not the case. There are Muslims there, yes, but not a lot.

It's a psychological thing. It has to do with the image of the President hard at work in Washington bringing a sense of security to the American people. Like, "I'm here, I'm on it. No worries."

Oh wait. You're talking about *this* president.

Nevermind...

To those asking "Well, he can work from there!"
Does he have as much access to information, the Pentagon, his aides, etc? Does he have the security? Can he coordinate with his advisors as effectively?

Hell, if his ranch is "Just as good" as the Whitehouse in a crisis situation, why bother to leave it AT ALL?

Of course he can communicate and make decisions and press the button from the back of his horse while playing cowboy on vacation, that's not the point. At least some of the job is appearances, isn't it? No? Damn, I want to nuke Iran from the water slide.

What is it subby? You wish he sticks his nose right in this so you can be pissed of at him no matter what later, or he does nothing so you can be pissed off at him no matter what now? Either way your going to have the same reaction no matter what he does.

In this case I'd rather he and us stay out of it and let Pakistan work it out.

/Get a hobby Subby

JamesDeSimas: I hope we stay out of this. We just need to mind our own business

Your hopes. Let me crush them.

I agree with you, but it's not going to happen. The only way we should get involved is if there is an actual civil war, and their nukes are in danger of falling into less than friendly hands. Then we should just figure out a way to secure them, or remove them from the country.

Philip J. Fry [TotalFark] 2007-12-28 09:26:36 PM
Being on "vacation" too often is one of the worst criticisms of this president. I think he'll be in the bottom five when we look back on his presidency in 20 years (or the top five if he gets lucky, long shot).

But the president is never on "vacation." The president being in washington is the same as all the TSA security bullshiat. It's about making you FEEL good, but has no real substance to it.
