(Yahoo) Obvious Though Guiliani loves to take credit for the revitalization of Times Square on the campaign trail, the process actually started in the Koch administration and really picked up steam under Dinkins. But, then again, 9/11   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 26

Pretty much all Giuliani did was take away the personal freedoms of many New Yorkers and tourists of New York City. Such as: Be able to find a pornography store within a reasonable amount of time of entering the city, dance inside a nightclub, be able to protest peaceably on the streets without having to get a permit first, be homeless without being jailed when a foreign dignitary (such as the Pope) comes to the city (not to mention, also being thrown back out on the street when the dignitary leaves), and a myriad of other things that popped up when Mayor Giuliani gets mad at something that goes against his cross dressing, adulterous, public money diverting for his own private use, Catholic values!

If you want to be a perverted drug using vagrant you can still find refuge in San Francisco.

Freedom! Yeah!

Unfortunately I don't do drugs, so I will just have to settle with being a normal perverted vagrant. :( But at least it's cheaper!

This is crap. I am not a Giuliani supporter. I will not vote for Giuliani under any circumstance for President. But, he was a great mayor. I know. I lived there at the time. The city was cleaned up within a few months of him replacing Dinkins. Everyone knows it except the leftist assholes who didn't like criminals being put in jail.

Sounds like Rudy's accomplishment in Times Square has a lot in common with Reagan's defeat of the Soviets.

I lived in NY during the Dinkins years, and if you mean Times Square got revitalized with more hookers and violent vagrant nut jobs, then yes, it was revitalized. The only thing Dinkins could do well was pander to grievance groups, go to tennis matches, and sweat profusely, the man could sweat in the shower....I think he slept on a sponge....

Yeah, notice that tactic isn't working too well on us though? Get a few more socialists in power and we'll see just how well that works, won't we?

Ding! We have a winner.

TFA: "'State agencies had plans in place to develop 42nd Street well before Giuliani,' said Ethel Sheffer."

The problem is that agencies and politicians and "urban planning experts" and everyone else had plans and ideas and visions and all kinds of useless crap. It was Giuliani who actually got things done. Same with crime. In fairness, Dinkins and his police commissioner Brown had some good ideas with Safe Streets Safe City, but it was Rudy who started actually locking up the bad guys.

I will also probably not vote for him, but that's only because I think that the U.S. in 2007 is in much better shape than NYC in the early 90's. The city needed the intense shock of a Giuliani; the country does not. But that doesn't take away from the historical fact that NYC did and he delivered it in full.

How about the asshole go back in time and put something where Ground Zero is, instead of leaving a horrible pit that stands to prove that the terrorists did farking beat us that day.

What an dipshiat.

What if I'm a pervert, but not a vagrant and I like to smoke a little pot now and then? Who represents me?

Crediting Dinkins with cleaning up anything? Are you effing kidding? In my lifetime there has been no more ineffectual mayor. Including Abe Beame.

About the only positive you can give Dinkins during his administration was that he was a fine tennis player. For his age group.

It's one thing to hate Rudy. But to throw this crud out there as revisionist history is just silly.

Baloney. Anyone who says New York City was cleaned up "within a few months" is a flat-out liar.

BiffDangler 2007-12-29 02:22:44 AM
the why not guy

Not at all. I was there, far upper west side. Bums and squeegee men gone overnight. Whereas before women wouldn't walk around at 1am, they started doing it shortly therafter. Its called arresting criminals and putting them in jail. It works.

bheilig 2007-12-29 03:06:10 AM
The guy's not fit to be President by a long shot, but denying that he saved New York City is just total foolishness.

This one has definitely been settled: putting small-time crooks in jail on a municipal level is dramatically effective.

Giuliani 1, Subby 0.

I'll give him credit. But is it really that impressive? I wouldn't vote for him.

I agree.

The city under Koch was grubby but liveable. I used to go there
a lot (I was in late high school/early college) and though it
felt like a city, I didn't feel particularly unsafe.

The city under Dinkins was scary. Like BLADE RUNNER/SHADOWRUN
Seattle scary.

I'll give Giuliani Time Square, but I have to say that while it
is cleaner and much more upscale & brightly lit, it has definitely
lost its character. Even with the scummy porno houses & such,
there was a feeling that "This is NEW YORK, MOTHERfarkER!".

Now, it feels exactly like any other planned commercial zone
(most disturbingly, like the Universal Mall in LA, which is
about as plastic as a mannequin factory).
