Hasn't it been based off Mozilla's work for the last version or two?

/doesn't recall

Loved that browser in the early 90's

chapulin 2007-12-28 02:20:27 PM
Has it been that long since I was awed at Mosaic and eagerly anticipated the release of Navigator?

7of7 [TotalFark] 2007-12-28 02:22:06 PM
But its legacy of shiattiness lives on in Firefox.

Let us bury this monster, for it brought onto this internet the heinous taboo of frames.

Cruiser7 [TotalFark] 2007-12-28 02:32:47 PM
The first commercial web browser I ever used was Netscape Navigator 2.0, with "2.02 Gold" right around the corner. Kinda sad to see the name go, but I'm happy with Phoenix, I mean Firebird, er, ah, Firefox.

SpinStopper [TotalFark] 2007-12-28 02:33:35 PM
My first browser was NCSA Mosaic. My second was Netscape.

RIP, Netscape ;)

You're thinking that other browser, Internet Exploder.

While cleaning out an old desk, I found a 5 1/2" diskette with a handwritten label that read, "Netscape Navigator v.96b"

Too bad I no longer have a working floppy drive to access the disk. It would be interesting to look back at the beta version of Nwetscape and see how much has actually changed.

Yay! "My browser is better than yours" Day on Fark. I'm glad I'll have something to do this afternoon.

I briefly used CyberDog.

/but it sucked

Yes. Yes it has.

Same here.

UNC_Samurai: I briefly used CyberDog.

Right now I use Firefox for the FarkIt goodness, but I'm liking Safari more and more. Safari's scaling of images is pretty damn smooth.

I only used Netscape for the Web Composer way back in the day.

UberDave [TotalFark] 2007-12-28 02:44:00 PM
I remember the days before Netscape. The description of the page came in via ASCII text and we would use this to draw the web page on paper by hand. Those were the days...

I still have a copy of Netscape 1.0 on a disk somewhere. That was a big upgrade in my college days from Mosiac.

Maybe Firefark will follow the same fate.

I used Nutscrape on my first computer with earthlink dial-up service.

God that sucked.

I used to use an old toaster, tied to a tea-cup with a piece of string, on top of my refrigerator to access the innertubes. Boy those were teh days.

TXEric 2007-12-28 03:29:49 PM
I'm browsing with SeaMonkey right now, and getting a kick...

JeffTL 2007-12-28 03:29:52 PM
My first Web browser was lynx. Mosaic was awesome because it had graphics, and Netscape had more features yet.

El_Maestro 2007-12-28 03:29:59 PM
My first internet browser. Remember being in grade one, and seeing a spartan looking page excitedly heralding comet Hale Bopp. Couldn't make shiat out of it, of course.

/was there porn in the tubes back in '95?

Aren't you supposed to be somewhere foaming at the mouth ranting about FUD? Or do they give you time off if you promise to spend it flinging your own FUD?

I hated Nutscrape. I used to do support for an ISP. I cringed every time a user said they had Nutscrape. The mail part of it was so user unfriendly and just plain bad.

/let it die

I still use Mosaic 1.0 exclusively. My theory has always been 'If it ain't broke, don't upgrade it.'

Anyone else around here fart around on Delphi back in the early 90's?

Yup, but it took a LONG time with dial-up... or so I've heard.

Ahh...I remember my old days of using Netscape, trying out MUDS, searing for porn...

Netscape Navigator was a piece of turd slow crap web browser. I was really happy the day Microsoft came out with Internet Explorer, ran much faster and I never had a problem with it.

TXEric 2007-12-28 03:33:44 PM
12.fl.oz.: So, what browser is everyone using? IE7 seems to lockup or just quit responding and then I have to restart. What a pain.

...which is exactly why I'm using SeaMonkey. Not a huge fan, but it's more stable than IE7.

Impasse 2007-12-28 03:34:16 PM
El_Maestro: /was there porn in the tubes back in '95?

Tons of it on USENET.

ChadM89 2007-12-28 03:34:50 PM
I had an external, 300-baud modem and "going online" meant connecting to your local ascii-based BBS to chat with folks in your town on the computer. When the phone rang, it'd disconnect you.

This was before there was an intrartube webscreen pagesite.

El_Maestro: /was there porn in the tubes back in '95?

Hell, I remember grabbing porn off of BBS' back when I was on dialup.

It really sucked if the pictured turned out to be awful...all those minutes wasted...

I'm going to download an old version on my home PC and reminisce on the old days.

R.I.P. Netscape

Isn't there a TOP 10! list on Digg you could go examine? Ooh or maybe a SEXY PICTURE!

/somebody please make Kevin Rose go away.

12.fl.oz.: So, what browser is everyone using?

I use two broswers to compare how sites look during development: Explorer version 7.0.5730.11 and Firefox version 2.0.0.11

I like them equally well. Never got into the "my browser is better than yours" arguments.
