I always wondered why they never put out a comic book of Superman or someone kicking the crap out of Saddam Hussein.

I mean, it worked for Captain America.

they can't do that any more. That famous cover of Cap punching out Hitler came out before America was involved in WWII - today, the comic producers feel (correctly) it would be disrepectful to real people fighting and dying to have a super-powered being dive into Afghanistan and punch Osama Bin Laden's lights out.

The U.N.'s goals are somewhat different: According to its Web site, it hopes the comics will teach children the value of international cooperation and sensitize them to the problems faced in other parts of the world.

Kids shouldn't have to worry about internation cooperation. Give them Cheetos instead.

Congratulations UN, you are as effective as the war on drugs, and will now be treated as such.

It's seems more likely it's an attempt to brainwash kids into believing the UN actually does something to end wars and suffering.

You have to indoctrinate them early, otherwise they start thinking for themselves.

Actually, Spider-Man and the UN are a lot alike.

Both are unholy mutations that, if their true nature was known, would be beaten to death with bats.

Both are sticky, and create webs that, while they don't effect them, make nothing but annoying red tape for everyone around them.

Both fight only imaginary villains, ignoring real crises in order to rescue their favorite girl (or corrupt 3rd world nation) from harm,.

Both have never learned that if you don't totally destroy and eliminate your enemies you will just have to fight them over and over and over and over and over and over again.

So really, Spider-Man is the perfect posterboy for the UN.

FTFA The U.N. is teaming up with Marvel Comics, creator of Spider-Man, to create a comic book. It will be set in a war-torn fictional country and feature superheroes working with U.N. agencies.

Because we all know what a great farking job the UN does to prevent war. More wars have been fought since the UN was conceived than all of the previous wars in known history combined.

Sounds like T-Man, the Treasury Agent comic from the 1950's.

So, any armchair ambassadors want to give me an idea on how to revamp or replace the U.N.? I always hear moans and groans when it comes to discussing the role of the U.N. in current affairs, but no one seems to have anything to say other than pointing out corruption and inefficiency.

Why doesn't this issue get more attention?

That's why it's a bad idea to set superhero comics in the real world. I prefer DC's method, where all the cities are analogue to our own cities instead of being the actual place (i.e. DC's Gotham City vs. Marvel's New York City).

The article says the script will require committee approval, so expect that this is one comic that will never get published. Imagine, if you will, all the countries that hate America approving a comic that shows how an American hero helps the UN to its good deeds.

Nunh-unh. Not yours. Evar.

I'm actually a fan of the U.N. vis a vis U.S. policy objectives. The United States basically controls the Security Council, and if you don't believe me, ask yourself when was the last time the U.N. actually prevented the U.S. from accomplishing anything. It never has.

The two complaints that seem to come from the conservative corners of the country regarding the U.N. seem to be that 1) it's way too powerless, with only the power or initiative to send "strongly worded letters" to those it opposes and 2) that it's way too powerful, functioning as a one-world-government and leading to evils such as the Human Rights Commission and allowing other countries to sue the U.S. in international court for U.N. Charter violations.

This seems incongruous to me.

Of course, the truth doesn't resemble either of those positions. The U.N. will never be a world government. Even in the Oil-For-Food program, governance and oversight was specifically requested - and acquired - by the veto-power nations themselves, not by any intra-organizational committee. Simply put, the only real power the U.N. has is governed and indeed controlled by the members of the Security Council - especially the permanent members - not the other way around.

The U.N., however, does have a function and a power of its own. It's basically an organization specifically designed for and by the rich nations of the world to tell the small and poor nations of the world what to do. The U.S. (or France or Russia or a proxy) can invade and conquer any nation they want without U.N. reprisal. Iraq, however, couldn't invade Kuwait, even under the pretext of state security, without earning itself a beatdown prompted by the Security Council.
