I have Kinks tour t-shirts going back to '71. May add another.

They used to put on a great show. I'd go see them again.

I'm on a "Low Budget."

Hope tickets are cheap.

I'll go. So what if they're old & gray. I'll happily support their old age fund for the joy they gave me over these years.

I'm in line already, so I'm getting a real kick out of these replies.

I read in some zine in the early 90s about a Ray Davies show (I think it was just him solo) the reviewer had gone to.

Someone in the audience had written out a suggested set list on a paper plate. After a song or two, Ray reached down, took the plate, and abandoned his own set list, playing everything on the plate instead.

Something like that. Anyway that's so cool I've always thought of it, every show I go to no matter who is playing, since.

Wow, such respect. I was all ready to go hating on the Kinks. You get more smack talk about Zeppelin...hmmm. Ok the kinks suck so bad, no one even bothers to mention the suckiness.

"One For the Road" is one of my favorite live albums of all time. I wonder if they can match the vibe...

At my local watering hole, the jukebox was recently upgraded to one of those internet-connected ones. I was thrilled to see that there were 200-something Kinks songs listed, but after closer inspection I realized that some of their best stuff was missing. Really now- what's a collection of Kinks music without "Celluloid Heroes" or "Low Budget", anyway?

I was front row, dead-center at a Kinks show in '81 at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta. Ray put a microphone right in my face for some sing-along chorus action on "Lola" and "Low Budget". I sounded very bad.

He also shook my hand (and others') when he first took the stage. It was unbelievably wet and clammy. So I guess we're even.

For my money, this album was better than Rubber Soul.

I'm actually more excited about this than Zep, cause I'm sure I can get tickets to see the Kinks. And they're so damned eclectic--one of the greatest bands of all times and truly underrated by most folks.

Is it just my own paranoia to think they aren't doing this to give the people what they want, but instead because they are on a low budget and can't afford a gallon of gas?

I saw them at the Great Western Forum in L.A back in the early 80s (might have been the Fabulous Forum then.) Great show.

Word of Mouth is that it's Something Else. They're not mere Schoolboys In Disgrace, they're just trying to support the Preservation Act and fight the Power, man. I guess you could watch A Soap Opera instead, or just Come Dancing and see if they rock you To The Bone. Just don't be an Animal.

/I like this game

The Kinks are the definitive English band.

Very gentle,nostalgic and sentimental.

They seemed to always be in the backseat to the Stones,Beatles and the Who but their compositions were no less than just as perfect.

If you attempt to embrace the Kinks I strongly urge you to NOT to get a compilation record as none of them truly do justice to their music.

I recommend getting "Face to Face" "Something Else" "Village Green Preservation Society" "Arthur (Decline and Fall of the British Empire)" and "Lola vs the Powerman"

Those five were released back to back in what is regarded as their
creative zenith from 66-1970.

Also, those five titles always appear as "budget" marked down cds in most music stores. $8.99-$11.99 specially priced.

"Don't wanna get myself shot down, by some trigger happy policeman, Gotta keep ahold of my sanity, I'm a paraniod, schiziod, product of the 20th century" Love the Kinks!

I'm there. Will Eddie Van Halen be playing "You Really Got Me?"

I'll go if they come to the states. It'll probably sound along the lines of To the Bone, which isn't how I ideally prefer The Kinks (I miss the harpsichord!) but would still be a lot of fun to go see.

Ray did a live radio show from Electric Lady Studios ( on 8th st. in new york ) back in the early 90's when i was working there as a staff engineer. He really didn't like the performance and after the show made a big deal about getting the tapes so it wouldn't go out and no one would hear it .. - when they told him it had already gone out live over the radio on wnew.. welll .. the look on his face was priceless

/ wooo he was pissed
// good times

Meh. I think when you're making music, you can be as big of a dick as necessary to ensure continuous good quality.

If you want someone contemporary, who has a very Ray Davies vibe-
google "Rory McVicar"

I think you will enjoy.

So is Pete Quaife going to learn everything in the catalog post "Arthur"? Hmmm... no mention of a keyboard, which cuts out just about everything post 1970.

Still, would go see them, even if a bit of travel was involved. Saw the Schoolboys tour (opening act was Jean-Luc Ponty!!!), Low Budget and Storyteller... there's no better stage presence than Ray Davies.

Much as I'm hoping for all the great classics, would love to see Ray & Dave do "Hatred" live.

dereksmalls 2007-12-29 04:11:54 AM
Dave wrote a book, with some very nasty stuff in it about Ray, most of it probably true. They didn't speak for years. That is the main reason Ray and bro haven't toured for decades.
That said, have seen them 3 times, '71, '80 , and their last tour, and they have always put on a very entertaining show. Great songs, good front man, yes, they rock.

You have to have "Muswell Hillbillies" in there somewhere -- I'd drop "Lola" for that one. In fact, you could be pretty happy with *just* "Arthur," "Village Green," and "Muswell." Not ecstatic, of course, but those three will do you just fine.

Then again, I think it's possible to be a huge Kinks fan, yet hate their concept album period. You could legitimately love them just for the stuff they did on Arista-- "Come Dancing," "Sleepwalker," Low Budget," "Catch Me Now I'm Falling," "Misfits," etc. etc. etc. They were a band that could write brilliant singles and brilliant concept albums, appealing to two completely different types of audiences.
