The JDAM sale would be part of a combined $20 billion or so in fresh U.S. arms sales to Gulf Arab states described by Washington as a strategic drive to counter Iran's growing might.

It makes perfect sense, submitter. We need to protect ourselves from a country that might attack us.

it's not like we're selling them anything already...

PlasticMoby:

Both sides are getting what they want, albeit in a sadly shortsighted manner. The Saudi ruling family have no qualms about doing whatever is necessary to suppress dissent and stay in power. Since they sell us oil, we help them stay in power because we know their replacements wouldn't.

Of course, this policy fails to address the root issues on either side of the deal and it's frankly not in anyone's best interest. America would be better off if this deal were turned into money and a big-rig full of Benjamins pulled into alternative energy researchers instead, while both Saudi Arabia and America need to attack the underlying causes behind Islamic militants. Particularly, massive unemployment which leaves a lot of young men hopped up on hormoes sitting around all day thinking of people to blame, and America's domineering, arrogant foreign policy that gives them something to hate.

However, doing that will upset the status quo and a lot of people on all sides have a vested interest in the status quo:

* US warmongers: Distract people from our failed domestic policies
* Saudi ruling familiy: Keep political power
* Insurgient & religious leaders: Keep control over people by keeping them poor and miserable
* US military-industrial complex: Keep selling them bombs

They provide a healthy supply of patsies for false flag operations, have lots of oil and own a good chunk of America.

The question your regime will soon be asking you is, why do you question what your government does - are you a terurist?

See how that works?

Sadly, I will feel bad when the shoe hits the other foot and I don't know why.
You sound like the kind of guy that if you were Lebanese would be very forgiving
if it was your loved ones that had been obliterated by "making the right decision".

Perhaps we'll see...
I envision it going something like this...

Dear Mr. Simia Saturnalia,

I regret to inform you that all of your loved ones were obliterated during
a measured reprisal for an attack on our soil. While admittedly, everyone
dies over an extended period of time and in excruciating pain, we can all
take comfort in knowing you believe in this action as just, even if it is
somewhat barbaric.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Oh, and have a nice day,

Regretfully,

Some butcher or another.
(Like it really makes a difference to you)

As it should.

as opposed to the people defending their right to continue to exist.

So, in your mind it is forgiveable to knowingly kill an innocent person as long as it can be claimed that the action is based on "defending [your] right to continue to exist."

Using that logic, if someone fires a rocket or mortar at you, or aims teenage suicide bombers at teenage civilians because they think they are "defending their right to continue to exist" you would have no problem with that, right?

As to the line, "fostering a culture of martyrdom amongst their pre-teen population", we certainly would never call someone a hero for giving their life defending what they believe in, now would we?

Sorry, openly declared genocidal religio-political fantasies lose. No apologetics stand up.

Sure, but only as long as it isn't your "openly declared genocidal religio-political fantasies" right?

And, anyway, the thing that bothers me most about them is that it looks like the artist simply drew adults with really small bodies and kid's clothes on.

Agreed. For better or for worse, Israel is rightfully there, and there to stay.

But here's the problem: they won't stay! Israel keeps trying to expand its borders by warfare, which is a violation of the charter of the very organization from which the state of Israel derives it's legitimacy in that region, not to mention just a really bad thing because it tends to cause perpetual wars. (I know, who'd have guessed, right?)

Well then, how about this?

You tell me why it is so important for Israel to be located in what might be considered the absolutely worst area of the world? Was the the barren desert?

Don't you think the entire world, as well as the Israelis, would have been better off moving to a slice ot South America, one they could have easily bought with the money they have spent on destroying things?

Forget the cost of life - on both sides.

If you can't understand the difference between a country and its people, you're an idiot. I know many 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, but 9/11 was not Saudi state-sponsered.

Also, why do we always have to talk about the Israel/Palistine conlift when something happens in the middle east? I'm not going to come to this thread to talk about soccer, because it has nothing to do with the article

This is true, but you have to admit, the type of society the people in power promote in Saudi Arabia promotes wahabism, and in turn the type of thinking that influnced the 9/11 highjackers.

I can't make any claim on the people of Saudi Arabia because I know very few personally. That I admit.
