Oh God! There is no farking drummer better than Neil Peart!

/It ain't easy being cheesy.

El Freak [TotalFark] 2007-12-26 12:18:11 PM
Not to mention the most soulless and boring to listen to. He's what Kenny G. would sound like if he were a drummer.

Screw your guys, Neil Peart rocks!

THIS

Sure, he has amazing technique and talent, but lets face it, he's a robot.

Bill Bruford (from 1971-1976) had more character in one snare hit than Neil Peart has in an entire drum solo.

/slight exaggeration.

Third_Uncle_Eno: Bill Bruford (from 1971-1976) had more character in one snare hit than Neil Peart has in an entire drum solo.

I'm afraid I have to respectfully disagree. Neil Peart has been a great innovator in the art for decades and remains someone that up-and-coming drummers look to emulate.

His 80s output with King Crimson wasn't so bad either - he was one of the first guys to really embrace electronic drums and do things with them you'd never hear on a Duran Duran record...

Whatthefark 2007-12-26 12:48:06 PM
Neil Pert is a great drummer. Mechanical, yes. Still great. Catch him live if you can.

/Two of the greatest drummers of all time square off.

Is this one of those "sorry we snubbed you for so many years, here's a make-up award" awards, or are they actually serious?

Blast! I (momentarily) forgot about the "Discipline" era!!
Thanks, Rekoil! :-)
[p.s. i like "Discipline" 5x better than "Beat" or "Three of A Perfect Pair".]

I'm definately not doubting his innovativeness, techincal prowess and mad skillz. I'm just saying his drumming is cold and robotic. [like I said before, he's the Tony Banks (Genesis) of the drums].

pngwnpwr 2007-12-26 01:45:18 PM
Once I achieve five limb independence I will destroy Neil in the drum-off of all time, space and eternity.

I am not a drummer, I don't know what is technically difficult or impressive, nor do I care. Brann Dailor of Mastodon is really fun to listen to though.

Mastodon - Sleeping Giant.

Must have been a slow year.

I'm a huge Peart fan, but his drumming on S&A was so non-descript that you forget about drums only a few minutes into it. That never happened on their older material.

I picked up Neal jack and Me...the King Crimson concert on DVD, just the other day. Damn...my mouth is still open with astonishment.

First...I think Bill Brufford is a poet with drums. Hes so beyond mear drumming. Listening to earlier works with KC like fracture on Starless and Bible Black is a revelation to what drumming can be. That being said, the best drummer is something I think you really can;t put into one thing. Do you measure speed? Do you measure power? I think Steve Jansen is pretty smart on drums too, although he never tries for speed...he;'s all about the color.

Don;t know the drummer being voted on here. I'll have to give him a listen. Glad to see Bills name being brought up.....the man is a drumming god.

GreenKnight18 2007-12-26 01:57:59 PM
What gets drummers more wound up than the eternal Neil Peart good vs. bad argument?

Olympus Mons 2007-12-26 01:59:43 PM
as for Tony Banks.....Genesis was better with Peter Gabriel. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadways was pretty cool from Tony Banks also there.

kcrasras 2007-12-26 02:10:46 PM
I'm very disappointed there aren't more people here ripping on Peart and saying how overrated he is.

I'm a huge Peart fan. But I like to see the predictable backlash on these boards against anything that becomes popular. So the fact that Peart isn't getting chewed up here by a bunch of elitist, anti-social trend-haters means that he still isn't getting the public recognition that he actually deserves.

I've heard a lot of people say this... it sounds more convincing when you know which one was the drummer.

There's nothing Neil Peart's ever done that this couldn't also do:

But there's plenty that drummers who understand feel CAN do that he can't.

I wonder what Neil Peart would sound like playing goregrind. I think he could do decent gravity blasts.

Helen Wiggin- the best at playing off-time stuff. Way off.

drummr2112 [TotalFark] 2007-12-26 02:45:44 PM
He's a magnificent drummer and a huge musical influence to me and a myriad of other artists. One of the absolute best ever.

By the way, check out his lyrics on some his albums in the past 17 years. Phenomenal stuff, some amazing social commentary.

Seriously.

serioulsy though, they kind of suck. Pert isn't half the drummer pinchface is.

Maybe you're not seeing that because Rush isn't really getting MORE popular than they already are? When I think of trendy music, I do not think Rush, and when I think of a trendy drummer, Neil Peart isn't the first name that leaps to my mind. I don't love or hate Rush, but c'mon, they're not like The Arcade Fire (which has suffered the trend-hater backlash this year that you describe).

/Although Neil Peart WAS in the Broken Social Scene video for Fire Eye'd Boy...

These awards are meaningless. Karen Carpenter edged out John Bonham as drummer of the year back in the 70's sometime. That tells you a lot about these awards. I was reminded of that with all the Meg White comments.

/Neil Peart is the best, imho
//I actually like Meg White's drumming too

The lack of Nate Smith, Willie Jones III, or Clarence Penn anywhere on that page completely invalidates said poll. But have fun over there in 1992, gang.

"In 1975 Karen Carpenter was named the Best Drummer in the annual Playboy Music Poll. Second place drummer was John Bonham."

I know it's not the same genre as Rush/KC, but Stanton Moore of Galactic is probably the best drummer I have ever seen live. They guy can play everything from progressive rock to jazz, funk to hip hop and everything between. He's performed with Corrosion of Conformity, Rachid Taha, Garage a Trois, Irma Thomas... Really amazing stuff. He can do more with a regular-sized kit than most people can do surrounded by drums.

Travis Barker won not one but two awards?

Joey Castillo would like a word with this magazine

Hell, even Tre Cool with the release of Foxboro Hot Tubs must be pretty annoyed with this
