I'm starting to think that everything created in the seventies, regardless of medium, was done whist on cocaine.

Heroes was one of the Berlin Trio (Low, Lodger, and Heroes). I believe he was either in the process, or had just kicked heroin (along with Iggy Pop) when he did this.

He was always an incredible showman but I'm not sure he was high at the time this was done.

There was a moment as I was clicking on the link where I was afraid that it was going to be John Wayne singing

His cocaine use was the worst from 74-76. He doesn't even remember recording Station to Station in '76. He went to Berlin to kick his habit as he figured if he went where the drugs were most readily available he wouldn't take them. From what I gather he still did some coke once in awhile but he really started to clean up his act during the Berlin Trilogy.

I just can't imagine John Wayne pulling off "Heroes."

/although, to be fair, he did drink all the time

the thin white duke is what they called John Wayne when he had cancer,,,,

Bowie; 30% talent, 30% chemicals, 40% hype

don't forget Tin Machine,,,,and his disco period

dereksmalls: disco period

I'm not sure one single can really be called a 'period'.

I like Bing and early/mid period DB but man! that 'Little Drummer Boy' skit is like finger nails on a black board to me.

The Sovereign must be obeyed,

Unless your Phantom Limb

David Bowie is the head of an underground organization of super villains, known as "The Guild of Calamitous Intent"

That's still about 28% more talent than usually sells a lot of records.

And 28% less hype. The chemical ratio is about right, though.

I remember seeing a parody of Bing/Bowie with Craig Kilborn and Bob Mould. I've been looking for it for years. Anyone? Bueller?

I've got a 45 of Bowie singing this in German.
