As if often the case with me I was surprisingly unaware of this genius artist and now, after his death, will become a huge fan.

Oscar Peterson was fantastic. His solo work is outstanding, and he was a great combo player as well. One of the great things about Peterson, though, was his appeal to people who weren't all that into jazz. I've had people in my car when I've been listening to "Night Train" or one of his other great tunes, and they all seem to enjoy it more than other albums I may have on randomly.

Just found this little gem: Oscar playing with John Coltrane and Stan Getz live in Germany 1960. Pure heaven... Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb round out the ensemble. (pops)

OP rocked. He had an amazing run, though, and hopefully the end was peaceful for him. He definitely has a place in the piano pantheon.

Check out his pimp bracelet.

I really liked his album with Anita O'Day.

Not to sound like an old fart, but, man, that was when music was music. Not the synthetic crap of today.

/Awesome clip. Like my first present of Christmas. Thanks

Unless you have seen Slayer live, your opinion means nothing.

Yeah, He rocks. I remember the first time I heard Him - I was listening to just jazz-rock guitar stuff. I heard Oscar P. and then started noticing other instruments. What got Me was His speed with accuracy.

There are many greats in the arena of jazz piano. Bill Evans, Brubeck, Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, Red Garland... But Oscar was a unique talent. He had a great romantic style, and I've never heard another play the piano with as much speed and accuracy as Oscar. He's one of my favorites and will certainly be missed.

There are lots of great OP albums, but if you haven't heard it yet, pick up "Nigerian Marketplace". It's a live performance at Montreux. It's truly stunning stuff.

This news totally ruined Christmas for me. It just adds to the ennui.......

Oscar Peterson was a phenomenon and will be HUGELY missed--by me, and by millions of his appreciators. He also made Canadians goddamned proud of him. The legend lives on...
