I also love the song "Tricycle," which I first heard on as a b-side to one of the singles from the E-Bow the Letter album.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi=the most under-appreciated album in the R.E.M. catalog.

"Dead Letter Office" is the last R.E.M. album I was able to buy.
The further away I get from "Murmur" the worse they sound to me.

I saw them in 86 or 87 for "Fables of the Reconstruction" and it was a truly great show. They did a cover of "Lucifer Sam" by Pink Floyd
which was funny because I had just seen Love and Rockets a few weeks before and they did the same song.

I gave up on them after Document. They had some good stuff in the early years and then just settled back into a comfortable groove. Kind of like U2. Every damn song is the same now.

I've yet to fully appreciate it.

I haven't heard anything by them, really, since Monster. "New Adventures..." I didn't give enough time. I wasn't at a stage where I gave things a lot of patience. Grunge was still king. When I heard "Up," I just meh'd and strayed for good.

I understand a lot of criticism laid upon them by fans. You could could count on them for putting out the same sound. And when they quit doing that, that's around the time I ceased to listen. I don't know, I didn't do it on purpose. They were one of my favorite bands for a long time. If CD's had grooves to be worn out, Automatic and Out of Time would be flat, acetate plates. One of my Automatic... tapes was strewn across Interstate 20 just on the other side of Dallas near Six Flags.

I saw some tape on the side of the road the other day and thought about how you haven't seen that in years.

I applaud REM for truckin' on and even getting into experimental territory that is different enough to alienate their hardcore fans a bit. I'm real sorry I "lost" on them. They are a great band with a lot to offer, I've just got my musical portfolio divvied up in other funds and investments.

I loathe the U2 comparison made earlier.

Sounds like every other f*cking REM song. Except for that shiatty one. And the other one.

I'm amazed at how many people apparently haven't listened to REM since Document... yet how much higher their sales and chart positions became.

I stopped listening to them once they started making records, they were much better before that.

Under appreciated due to the fact REM sucks the peanuts out of poo.

If you want good "Undertow", try TOOL.

New Adventures was quite an achievement. One of my all time favourite albums, despite the fact I was disappointed after the fist few listens.

The new stuff from the Dublin live rehearsals sounds pretty good too. Glad to know they didn't become formulaic once commercial success set in.

Actually, the best Undertow from the 90's comes from Lush
on their album Split.
