Jokes aside, they've been domesticated for thousands of years, but they're still more endangered than African elephants? That's odd; anybody have any ideas why this is?

Overhunted for use as work elephants. They're not domesticated like horses, cattle and dogs, they've just lived with/exploited by humans for 1000 years. That's too short a time period to alter the gene pool enough so that they're really domesticated, and breed rapidly in captivity. Plus Africa has one thing that India lacks -- open space for nature preserves.

/assuming there's enough genetic variability to work with anyway
//pretty cool a big monster like that will let us push it around, anyway

I think the Thai government should just give them an insignificant portion of their native lands back and compensate for the dramatic drop in their population by letting them operate casinos.

The real queastion is how do you pronounce Reuters?

Rooters?
Roiters?

I was listening to NPR yesterday when BBC's World News was on and they pronounced it like Roiters. I had always pronounced is as Rooters so my mind asploded. I chalked it up to being because the correspondents were Brits and then cried myself to sleep.

Nothing like walking out of the bars at 2am drunk and then seeing a massive elephant walking down the street. It still messes with you no matter how many times you see it...

SuperDuper28, I've always heard it said "Roy-ters." And the Reuters FAQ seems to concur.

/But hey, they're a media organization - they might be wrong!

The reason it's pronounced that way is because it's named after a German businessman. The German combination of the letters "eu" is (roughly) pronounced "oy" in English.

/the more you know!

They aren't bred in captivity. Work elephants are captured in the wild then trained.

Sweet. Henceforth, when speaking to Germans about their regional negotiating bloc at the UN, I shall be sure to refer to the "Oy presidency." :)
