His cameo in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is priceless. Nice to see he has a sense of humor about being thought of as a pretentious, pontificating d-bag after all.

Headline should read

"Happy 43rd birthday to the second most overrated "icon" of the 90's, Mr. Eddie Vedder".

First being Cobain.

I hate to pull the "friend-of-friends" card (does this mean I should be getting a kick out of these replies?) but from all accounts - my friends, random fans, other musicians, etc. - Ed is one of the nicest, warm-hearted people you could ever hope to meet.

Ed's sense of humour is vastly underrated. It's somewhat understandable that the stick-up-the-rear persona was crafted - he dealt with getting followed in the streets and stalked, receiving death threats from pro-life zealots for playing pro-choice gigs and being very outspoken about a woman's right to choose, and sensational media exposure on top of record company bullshiat. Can't really expect someone to deal with that with a tonne of grace or anything, but he did the best he could and pulled out of the spotlight when it got to be too much - smart move. Maybe if Kurt said "No" to more interviews, appearances, ridiculously large tours, etc., he'd still be here. Hard to say, though. I sorta think that Kurt was the type of person who would have killed himself no matter his profession - the stomach and drug problems and mental illnesses would have driven him to the same desperation had he been a teacher, a lawyer, or a factory worker. But I digress.

Over the last 10 years, Pearl Jam as a whole became more relaxed, and Ed's dropped the much of the protective guard. Unfortunately, the initial impressions remained. That said, like Ed really gives a flying shiat about his reputation amongst the too-cool-for-school types who are just as self-important, if not more, as they claim Ed to be.

I remember the 96 grammys, the jerk wins an award ,then complains about "Oh, I don't believe in awards, blah blah blah". Even my mother said "what an a-hole,why show up if you don't believe in them?"

Soundgarden was the best thing to come out of Seattle during the grunge years. Nice to see Cornell finally get his just dues with Audioslave , and now as a solo. He can actually SING.

I always felt Pearl Jam got the shaft by being labeled grunge, which they weren't. And Evenflow is easily one of the best songs of the 90s. Having said that, for the Seattle bands, no one beats Alice in Chains.

Ummmmmmmm wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh wahhhhhhhhhhh. Vedder can SING and they both played in Temple of the Dog together moran. And you're damn right he doesn't believe in awards and wanted people to know how stupid they are. Vedder and cornell are friends and i'd bet they'd both agree you are a total douche. if i ever won an award i'd do like 8 hits of acid and set it on fire stage.

I think all of you Eddie haters are confusing him with Scott Stapp.

And anyone who will insult someone on their birthday is a total and complete douchebag, much like Mr. Stapp.

Eddie and the rest of Pearl Jam were, indeed, 90s icons; like it or not. And some of us still hold them, their music and their world view in very high regard.

I'll bet the majority of the haters in here were sucking their mamma's tit while Eddie was stage-diving into a crowd at Lollapalooza '92.

I was in the mosh pit.

Eddie Vedder is to singers what William Shatner is to actors.

....OVERacting,singing.

Also, before Soundgarden or Mudhoney was the MELVINS.

They were the singular origin of that whole "scene" the Northwest.

They were the first and the best.
They actually became disgusted with Seattle and the scene there that they abandoned it long before it actually got big nationally.

They moved to San Francisco in 87-88.
It is because they moved that there then bassist Matt Lukin stayed behind and formed Mudhoney.

A mosh pit. During a Pearl Jam show. Kinda like bragging about being in a mosh pit at a New Kids on the Block concert.

Until you've lived through the mosh pits at a show by GG Allin or The Exploited, you have no room to talk.

Pearl Jam was one of those bands that to me, never mattered. I could take or leave their music. I actually preferred Mother Love Bone's stuff to Pearl Jam's. I wonder what the music would have been like if Andrew Wood hadn't died and Eddie Vedder had never been brought in to replace him and form PJ from the ashes of MLB.

Side note: I had a cat that would try to bite my face when I sang "Alive." Other songs, she didn't mind, but that one made her violent; that and when I whistled the theme song to "Quantum Leap."

Gandalf_is_dead 2007-12-24 01:28:22 PM
I like the first album.
Select songs after that, like Yellow Ledbetter (sp?), but that mostly for the guitar work (reminds me of little wing)
Loves me some AIC tho.
Not that that has anything to do with anything.
Merry Xmas all!

Kurt Cobain = Horrendously overrated. Sang like shiat. Mouth full of marbles.

Grunge did kill off the hair bands though. Dammit, I liked the hair bands in high school and college. Grunge hit as I finished college and hit the working world, and the transition was appropriate.

College = partying hair bands; transition to work life = depressiong Seattle bands.

Still, I like Pearl Jam. They'd have fit in back in the '70s with the guitar bands as well as any place though, and I view them as more of a classic rock style band than a grunge band.

xdedd 2007-12-24 05:22:36 PM
Pearl Jam is the greatest live band in the world.

They keep their ticket prices incredibly reasonable and make sure members of their fanclub get first dibs on all seats instead of giving those front row tickets to record industry douchebags.

They play 2.5 hour shows with multiple encores and every show is recorded from the soundboard and available for download within one or two days.

They have been playing together for 15 years and are one of the tightest bands you will ever see live.

And I agree with purple helmet in that they were never really "grunge". They are definitely more of a classic rock band.

skeeterjennings 2007-12-24 05:43:30 PM
Screaming Trees was the best thing to come out of Seattle during the grunge years.

The Trees had a great run there from about 88-94, ("Buzz Factory" was always my favorite) but their live shows were either brilliant or horrible depending on their drug intake. And on their early records, they sound like a Cure cover band.
Mudhoney always delivered, and are still going strong.

The funny thing is that all the "grunge" bands ended up selling out WAY harder than the hair bands. At least all the hair band guys are still playing together and have FUN at their shows!

You guys are all posers! I prefer [insert name of less commercially successful band here] way more. They were way better and didn't sell out. They even got fed up with [insert name of hipster scene] and left before all the posers ruined it.
