I have a guarenteed plan to make it so that those Cameras, anywhere in the world, won't make a dime. Ever.

Stop breaking the speeding laws.

Problem solved.

You're welcome.

They should arm the cameras with guns. If you have a problem with laws stop voting for people who put in bad laws, don't just blow up the enforcement measures.

7of7: ... If you have a problem with laws stop voting for people who put in bad laws...

Logic will get you nowhere in politics, my friend.
People don't vote for lawmakers that write good laws. They vote for the one with good hair, more money, and a slick presentation. Or they vote for the down-home sounding good ol' boy who's "one of us". Or sometimes the screeching flame warrior who will "shake things up". But no mater who they vote for, we get the same crappy laws and government grows more and more powerful. What we see in GB is just a foretelling of what is on its way to America.

Ok, then lets have the government overthrown. If it's so apparent that it's not working for the people then rather than attacking the laws you don't like work for its total overthrow. The fact is these people are just whiny biatches who can't stand going a little slower. They're the people you see going 45 through a school zone and then complaining when they get ticketed. They're the people who have no personal responsibility for their stupid actions.

Existing laws have worked for a few hundred years pretty well, you elect someone new, they create additional laws perhaps under the misguided impression they are making our lives better and safer. Or for want of something better to do. But we the poor old citizens end up with some regulations straight out of Monty Python.

As much as I would love to bite this troll bait you have so generously dangled for me, I have football to watch and am now walking away from my computer for the day.
However I will say that organizing for the select purpose of systematically destroying public property used for law enforcement (as seen in TA) is how revolution begins. This in and of its self is revolution. If nothing is done, it will spread.
And I say, "Burn, Baby, Burn." Better now than later.

Cincinnati City Clowncil just approved the installation of speed camera last week. They didn't even bother to try to justify it with feel good, "it's for safety/the children/etc". Their publicly stated reason for the cameras was that it would raise $1,000,000 next year.

There are days that I'm sad that tar & feathering have gone out of style.

Postal Penguin 2007-12-23 01:22:11 PM
I applaud their efforts. I have more of a problem with red light cameras however especially when its discovered that municipalities frequently shorten yellows to snare more drivers.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2007-12-23 01:27:09 PM
Alacritous

Speed cameras routinely ticket people who don't break the law. Same for red light cameras.

The only reliable way to stop cameras from ticketing is to eliminate them. The only proper solution to the overall problem is to permanently ban every person responsible for camera enforcement of traffic laws from any position of power or other government employment.

Never quite understood how people don't get that. It's like someone who buys a house out at the end of the runway, then thinks they have a reason to complan about the noise.

5000_gallons_of_toothpaste 2007-12-23 02:43:05 PM
They don't have alot of speed or red light cameras where I work, but the cops pull over so many speeders and red light runners that they drive Chryslers and Dodge Chargers as their squad cars. At least 4 cars run each red during rush hour. If you are #3 and you stop, you are getting rear ended.

Speed cameras are for lazy cops.
Speed traps are for money grubbing cops.
roadblocks are for fascist cops.
Seat belt traps are for cops who know they don't have to legally wear seat belts.

That's what I would use, it's fairly easy and cheap to make and has awesome effects.

That should read "Speed limit reduced".
Because if the revenue drops at the current limit, they'll just keep lowering the limit until they can get the monies they made those laws for in the first place.

Interestingly enough, this logic doesn't work because people act irrationally. I read an article recently about how Washington DC was losing revenue because people weren't speeding as often. The solution was to step up enforcement. Never mind the fact that speeding laws are created for the same reason as seat belt laws, to save money in health care costs. The fact that people aren't speeding and that this money was being saved is however a hidden cost leading to gov't officials thinking we're losing money by people doing the right thing.

ceejayoz 2007-12-23 03:06:21 PM
So, the solution to the government having "money-making machines" is to destroy them?

Uh... the end result will be more taxes to replace the cameras pay for more police to catch the vandal. They're not just going to go "oh, guess people are made, that's it then"...

The problem with obeying the speed laws is that the speed limit is generally set too low for the situation.

clancifer: Can they target redlight cameras in the US next? He'll, I'll even join.

I hate to say this, and I don't even know if red light cameras are effective, blah blah...

But people running red lights here in the Atlanta area is farking crazy. They don't even slow at yellow. They just run those lights like crazy. They aren't even following any sort of safety rules, they just run them.

So redlight cameras? Yeah, if they work, I'm all for them. I guess I will probably be in the minority here, but I don't speed, and I follow all the rules. I see drivers doing too much stupid crap, and I'm sick of it. I love cars, I love 'em a lot. But I don't see people with 911's and M3's breaking the laws, just the people in Ford's and Chevy's doing stupid potential life killing crap.

I'm tired of driving, because I have to be ready to defend my life at every intersection. And I kinda think you are to blame, clancifer. There's no reason to run red lights, yellow lights, etc.

Pick up any real racing magazine, and look at the top track times. A Ford Focus is a minute behind a Ferrari (in general.)

You can't drive like that. Not now, not ever. You're buying mere seconds when you run a red light. At best a minute. You save nothing, but when you run red lights and drive recklessly, you might just cost a life. So redlight cameras? Yeah, I'm for them.

Same logic as cigarette tax laws. Put more and more taxes on cigarettes to try to force people to stop smoking, but what do you do if everyone stops smoking? That money is going to go somewhere while they have it and when it stops they will need to get it from somewhere else. If they don't have a single group of people to pick on, then everyone is going to pay for it.

If the government truly needs more money, I'd rather that they just level with me and say that they'll have to raise the income and/or sales tax. Just be honest. Don't try to sneak through bullshiat like "fee increases" or try draconian enforcement of laws for no other reason than to squeeze out some income.

Of course, here in the States, one of the only candidates for President ever who actually said he'd raise taxes took one of the biggest assbeatings in the history of Presidential elections. I can't imagine it's much better in the UK.

You're right, why get fees from people who engage in illegal activity? It's much easier to just tax everyone and let yahoos speed around all they want. That makes a lot more sense.

foxtail 2007-12-23 03:15:15 PM
OK.

For all of you retard government interference enablers, here is the crux of the issue.

These farking cameras are not intended to catch only the law beakers.

They are intended to fine everyone that they possibly can and raise money for the municipality. Whether it means the township, the city, county, state, province or what ever, it is all about fundraising.

The people in charge of monitoring these devices are not going to admit if they are wrong. And these devices are intended to catch innocent people and provide irrefutable proof they are guilty.

The people in charge of the cams are the same short peckered, no talent, always got beat up as a kid, losers as the people on here who religiously defend anything to do with farking the public over.

I'm gonna sound like a loony, but my opinion is this: cars should be redesigned with the following things in mind.

1) Safe at any speed.
2) Safe while drunk.

In the end, I truly believe that a car that a 12 year old can safely pilot is much more the answer than setting up cameras and fining people for driving in the way that human beings drive. We make bad decisions and do dumb stuff. No amount of enforcement is really going to change that.

None of my family have ever been ticketed by a camera. One of my sisters did get ticketed by a cop once for speeding in a construction zone, but that was an accident. So long as the speeding / red light cameras work properly, I have no objection to them being there, as they make the roads safer and are no danger to us.
