Sounds pretty logical, but I have had a subscription to Men's Health for about 5 years now and in one issue was an article on cops who 'juice,' that is, use steroids. One of the affects of steroids is combativeness. (I went with 'combatitiveness' but it wasn't in my computer's dictionary, while 'combativeness' was.)

According to their study, at least 1/4 of cops juice; they're way more secretive about it than 'regular' 'drug' users are about their habits.

It seems the first resort of police is to escalate the situation and beat/taze the offender into submission, rather than trying to calm them down with talk.

Don't be silly, I'm not a cop.

I do, however, talk to cops. That is to say, Canadian mounties - they tend to be pretty friendly guys. I suppose the theory of calming a situation down rather than escalating it may be exclusive to Canada. After all, who wants to quietly arrest and detain someone when you can have a chance to use a firearm or taser instead!? :)

And, uh, maybe the friendly thing, too?

Must agree with you. More than the usual share of serial killers, kids who dig up dead chicks for 'relations' with her, guys who find dead deer attractive sexually, people in Milwaukee who cant drive or drive like South Carolina natives. Funny but I get a lot of stories of cops using the little laser on the front of the Taser to entertain cats. Taser recomends you test the Taser everyday. Seems kittys come running when the laser comes on. Theres a good use of $700 bucks for you.

My brother is a cop and I asked him about all these taser stories in the news. He said cops use tasers so much because its FUN! Being a cop is actually 99.9% intense tedium, so cops don't pass up a chance to make it more interesting.
