I honestly didn't get the hub-bub over the girlfriend. It isn't exactly unheard of for people with terminal cancer to let their partners try to find someone else before the end. It gives them one less thing to worry about (what will he/she do when I am gone?) and it gives the partner someone to help them through the hardship of losing a loved one.

Sorry Mr. Live-and-let-live, but in this "xtian, nuclear family, we-need-to-know-everything-about-a-politicians-private-life" country we're living in, people with your ideas may as well be terrorists.

You're just as detrimental to this country.

Obama or Clinton might end up 'working with' parasites like the health insurance industry, Edwards will go for the throat first chance he gets. They can smear him all they want, he's got the balls to take it and return fire.

Edwards in '08.

If it wasn't for the "my wife is dying of cancer, pity me" angle, I'd have no problem with negotiated extramarital relations. Which pretty much makes it clear that I'm in the minority for American voters ...

Yes because right now it's in the GOP's best interest to attack the Democrat's distant third most popular candidate. So surely it's them and not one of his Democratic opponents.

So you're saying if Edwards were doing better, say, in the lead, then the Republicans would be going after him?

Well, right now Edwards is statically tied for the lead in Iowa.

As the only white guy with a chance, Edwards is the only Democrat the Republicans are truly scared of running against. They know people are pissed at the Republican party and figure there are a lot of independents who want to vote for a Democrat, but probably won't vote for Clinton or Obama.

The Republican's haven't been attacking Obama for the same reason the Democrats haven't been attacking Huckabee. Both men are the other's opposition dream candidate. Dems "know" they can be the Huckster, Repubs "know" they can beat Barak Hussein Obama.

No matter how much Barak wins, until and unless he becomes the nominee, I expect the Republican attack machine will remain mostly silent. But if Edwards wins anything, they will go after him with everything they've got. Better to beat him now while the beating's easier.

Edwards is right to be wary of the emminent Republican attacks. If he wins Iowa, they'll be gunning for him.

The pregnant girlfriend story was reported by the National Enquirer.

As National Enquirer news of a possible John Edwards love child makes it way around the world, a fun fact to know is that a key owner of the Enquirer is a prominent New York investment banker and one of Hillary Clinton's key backers, Roger Altman.

Altman's investment group, Evercore Partners, bought a controlling stake in American Media, which publishes the Enquirer, in 1999. The president of Evercore, Austin Beutner, sits on American Media's Board of Directors.

Altman served in Bill Clinton's administration as United States Deputy Treasury Secretary, and his name is sometimes mentioned as a possible Hillary Clinton Treasury Secretary.

/tsk, tsk, tsk...
//You can bet that the Enquirer won't be leaking any anti-Clinton stories this time around.

There's a big difference between what happened with Dan Rather, Dan Rather's producer, CBS and what the swift boat slime did to Kerry.

One was sloppy journalism (i.e. confirming sources - from the producer's part) and the other was a blatant personal attack campaign.

Even if what Rather and CBS did was "personal attack", it paled in comparison to what the swift boat slime.

The swift boat slime and their supporters are traitors worthy of a noose. Thou shalt not attack or question a veteran's medals, history or patriotism. That's the 12th commandment.

The 11th commandment is that you do not attack another republican. Bush violated back in 2000 with his attack on McCain.

You Bush and his supporters are not worthy of being spit upon.

Donald_McRonald: Romney is Nixon.

No. Nixon was VERY, VERY intelligent, from a family of modest means, and paranoid as hell. Romney is dumb as a post, and is the scion of a very rich and politically prominent family. Except for the dumb part, Romney has much more in common with Kennedy than Nixon.

BilltheThrill 2007-12-23 10:20:03 AM
I am still waiting for the promised "big media outlets" to pick up the Edwards pregnant girlfriend thing. Didn't every blogger say that it was going to break this week? What gives?

Could the National Enquirer have got this one wrong? Does that mean Angelina didn't really catch Brad with another man too?

RandomRandom 2007-12-23 11:10:00 AM
I don't think the major media will ever pick up that National Enquirer story. The reason is because this sort of thing is almost impossible to prove.

I'd guess half (or more) of our elected officials in DC have had rumored girlfriends at one time or another. The major media never picks them up because sort of allegations are easy to make and almost impossible to prove. If the major media ran girlfriend stories based on nothing but rumors and the words of third parties, each and every candidate would soon have "rumored girlfriends".

Right now, she's denying it, he's denying it. Unless she decides she wants to be the next Monica Lewinski or has a scumball "Linda Tripp friend" with a tape recorder, this will never hit the major media.

If this is true, I'd think a woman in her situation would much rather be the mother of the President's child than the mother of some ex Senator's child. If Edwards wins Iowa, she'd be smart to pack her bags and move to the Caribbean for a year.

Kerry fired the first shots when he took part in the Winter Soldier meetings and slandered all of his fellow vets in them.

It's strange why GOP'ers are so terrified of Edwards. I just don't understand it. They attack him like he was satan incarnate, with more zeal than when they attack Obama and Clinton.

I figure it's either because they think he's the most electible in the general election so they want to smear him, or that his stance on tort reform and big business scares the shiat out of the GOP's corporate sponsors.

The only problem is that he's simply not electible. This guy couldn't even win his own dinky little state South C (or N Carolina for that matter) in 2004. There's no way he could win in the general election. Maybe if it was Obama/Edwards or Clinton/Edwards, but even then, we already found out, like JF Kerry did, that adding him to the ticket won't win you jack squat.

why can't you just hate edwards for the insane pandering communist he is? why does it have to be some secret fear? or does that just make you feel better like "omg you dont like him he must scare you w/ his super power truth!"

There's a big difference between what happened with Dan Rather, Dan Rather's producer, CBS and what the swift boat slime did to Kerry.

One was sloppy journalism (i.e. confirming sources - from the producer's part) institutional fraud and forgery by a so-called unbiased media and the other was a blatant personal attack campaign, by people who served with Kerry.

Even if what Rather and CBS did was "personal attack", it paled in comparison to what the swift boat slime, because it failed because it was a lie.

The swift boat slime and their supporters are traitors heroes worthy of a noose a medal. Thou shalt not attack or question a veteran's medals, history or patriotism, unless that veteran turns out to be a liar about his wartime service. That's the 12th commandment.

Where's the pandering in saying that something needs to be done about the influence wielded by the insurance and arms dealing industries?

I guess you figure if you say the exact opposite of the truth often enough, people will start to believe it?

The truth is that if Edwards is not electable, then no Democrat is electable for the presidency.

Nearly ever match-up poll shows Edwards is by far the Most Electable Democratic candidate. Over the past few months, almost all the polling gives him far larger margins over the Republican opposition candidates than either Clinton or Obama. In most of these polls, he's the only Democratic candidate able to beat all the Republicans. Obama and Clinton often lose to McCain.

Granted, a some of these polls haven't included Edwards as a choice, and there have been one or two (cough-zogby-cough) polls that always seem to favor Obama. (Zogby publicly hearts Obama). But Edwards is the best chance the Democrats have of taking the White House in 08.

And this business of him not winning his home state is a red herring. North Carolina has gone Republican in all but one Presidential election over the past 40 years. Romney and Clinton would also lose their true home states. Romney's campaign has already conceded that they won't campaign in Massachusetts. And Clinton would have a hell of a time winning her true home state of Arkansas.

Suggesting Edwards is unelectable is so ridiculous that I've come to assume most people pushing this fantasy are trolling in support of other candidates.

Many of the top Republican pundits have long said the candidate they most fear is Edwards. These Republican pundits feel most secure in running against Obama, their second choice is Hillary. But Edwards is the only white male with a chance on the Democratic side. The bigger reason he's feared by the Republican machine is that he beats them in match-up pole after match-up pole.

The fact is that Edwards is the most electable of the Democratic candidates.

Goodfella 2007-12-23 10:16:56 PM
RandomRandom: The fact is that Edwards is the most electable of the Democratic candidates.

If that were really true, then Edwards would already be the vice president right now.
