Wait'll the mexican government collapses sometime late next year and floods the southern states with refugees. Then we'll see some action.

FTFA: The border fence would have been farther along if we'd just given the Minutemen a federal grant in the form of a gift certificate to Home Depot.

Probably not. (new window)

But the minutemen would all get themselves some lovely marble countertops.

Why don't we just make Mexico a state? I mean... really. It'd be only marginally more corrupt a state gov. than Kentucky. Nobody but hoosiers really seem to get all riled up about Kentuckians crossing the border... so within a generation or so Mexico would just be another redneck state and everybody could calm down.

Can't fail!

Whoa, when did Congress get some sense on this issue? An incomplete fence isn't going to do anything, the workplace enforcement makes a hell of a lot more sense.

We've used all of our fence building material in Iraq.

Seriously.

(Not completely accurately, but seriously.)

FTFA:Congressional Democrats, and some Republicans, gut the Secure Fence Act in the omnibus spending bill against the wishes of the American people. In a bill with 9,000 earmarks, border security takes a back seat.

So basically, Congress said, "Fark you" to the people who put them into office, the voters, by not doing what the majority of Americans wanted.

I think it shouldn't be up to Washington DC to decide how the southern states, like the one I'm in, decide how to keep illegal aliens out of the state. I think it should be up to the individual states. We're the ones that have to deal with this shiat, we're the ones who should be allowed to decide what to do. Personally, armed agents at the border shooting anyone trying to cross illegally sounds good to me. Jailing for life coyotes who are caught smuggling people into this country and instantly deporting those they were smuggling in. Rounding up those who are here illegally and sending them to prison for a few years before going sending them back to where they came from also sounds good.

I have no problem with those who want to enter this country and become citizens, but breaking the law isn't how you do it, and those who have should not be given blanket amnesty and citizenship for it. If someone from Egypt or England or Japan has to jump through hurdles, pay fees and wait, to become US citizens, than so should those entering from Mexico.

Tunnels Under the U.S.-Mexico Border (new window)

The fence seems like another impending corporate boondoggle that won't do much to actually protect the borders. It'll keep out the people who would probably pursue legal means of immigration, while drug dealers will continue to go to any length to make sure their product makes it to market.

All it says is 'We're arrogant jackasses and don't want you here.'

Arcanum 2007-12-22 04:44:19 PM
We need to do what we can to help mexico not be such a crappy place. It borders the USA, so why can't it be successful? Canada seems to do well with the security and economic advantages of bordering a rich nation.

Mexico need not suck so much.

Also, Arizona's new laws to revoke business licenses to companies with illegal workers is looking quite successful. That is probably going to work much better. But the best thing for everyone is to reform Mexico so these good people don't need to break the law to have the life they deserve.

Seigneur 2007-12-22 04:46:12 PM
That's the thing with liberals. They don't understand that illegals are, in fact, criminals.
They use euphemisms like "undocumented workers" so they can ignore the fact they shouldn't be here in the first place then demand that we give them Social Security, Education and Health benefits. It's why hundreds of hospitals are closing their ER across the country and why that same Social Security is again in jeopardy.

Mr.Insightful 2007-12-22 04:46:36 PM
I'll be convinced Republicans are actually in favor of building a border fence when they propose the tax increases necessary to pay for it.

Until then, it's nothing more than a "don't blame us for screwing up the country over the last 7 years by running up a massive debt, blame those Mexicans instead". Because illegal immigration from Mexico is something that just started when Bush got into office, or something.

Except that most people in Mexico dont have a pot to piss in. Instead of supporting all the illegals in this country as we currently do, we'll be forced to support all the formal illegals, as well as those left in Mexico.

Because US companies do not go there to help the people but rather to take advantage of them.

raygundan 2007-12-22 04:48:52 PM
Common sense prevails for once. I mean, honestly-- does anybody really think we can secure thousands of miles of uninhabited desert with a *fence*? This would have been the biggest waste of money you could possibly imagine, circumventable with such high-tech gadgets as gloves, wirecutters, and homemade ladders (some of which would probably end up being made on the spot out of stolen bits of the !@#!! fence).

The only reason the limited sections in existence "work" is that their success is measured locally. Sure, San Diego sees a reduction with their fence-- there are unfenced areas just down the road they can cross instead. If you fence the whole thing, they'll just come through, over, and around it.

Whether you're for or against easier immigration to the US, this fence is still a giant boondoggle.

Yeah that just got upheld again by a judge, was in the paper today, now we just need to make it illegal to rent to them also so apartment and home owners who rent to illegals get their property seized. Of all the bad/stupid things the Sheriff here in Phoenix does, at least he's serious about getting rid of the illegals.

Why don't we just jail people who hire illegals. They won't come over if there's no work. Seriously, the solution is simple but it would hurt business, so I guess we'll spend taxpayer money on a fence!

I'd agree with you except I am having to pay for the illegal border crosser's medical needs, their children's education, their families car accidents while not seeing one cent of the taxes of the money they make putting others out of jobs by taking cash under the table and sending it back to Mexico.

Arizona has business licenses? That's cool, wish all states did so they would shut down businesses that break the law instead of stupid fines that do nothing, though I would want it to stay at the state level and not be controled by the feds.

Why do the Democrats want us to be invaded by foreign criminals and poverty cases? They whine about "Two Americas" and then they let these people in so as to depress the wages of working people.

When the working class grows a brain and figures out what's been going on, it will be one angry army. So, shhhhhsh, don't tell them.

The Landlord? You have to be kidding me. The BMV can't get it right with all the states resources, you think a landlord can?

The minority? Illegals has become the second biggest issue in this election and every single GOP candidate is for building the wall and securing the boarder. They are for it because they have heard from the people who are sick and tired of nothing being done for the last 20 years. They understand that this is a national security issue. Even the Democrats yelled about securing our borders and ports in the post 9/11 world.

You mean the completely corrupt government that doesnt do a damn thing for its people has nothing to do with the financial problems / jobless rates / crime / of Mexico?

We already have a moat for Texas: the Rio Grande. It likes to drown people and it's filled with sewage and toxic chemicals courtesy the maquiladoras who outlet their waste into the river.

Since that's not stopping people, what the fark good would a pussy little fence do?

The only reason to build it would be to hand money to some contractors in return for the illusion of security.

So... I guess it would be pretty par for the course this decade.

2) War In Iraq
3) Gasoline Prices
4) Immigration issues.

Just, you know... FYI

The Republicans had control of all branches of the government for six years and never did shiat about building a fence. So why are they so quick to blame "liberals" for opposing it? Or maybe they would rather have the cheap labor AND a way to rile up the masses to vote for them.

/Having their cake and eating it too
//More scared of being fenced in rather then keeping others out.

Shadow Blasko 2007-12-22 05:02:42 PM
I have an idea.

Put everyone that wants a job (American or Mexican) to work building a new canal, for wider shipping vessels along the border, from the pacific to gulf of Mexico. Let both governments and shipping companies pay for it.

/Likes to think big.

"Illegals has become the second biggest issue in this election"

Maybe for you goofballs in the GOP, but your soggy lot of has-beens, freaks, fakes, and and flakes is desperate to talk about anything besides the shabby record of recent GOP governance. That's all talk, though.

Where's the action?

Your GOP congresscritters still have a lot of power. The telcos may still get their retroactive immunity. If the GOP wanted this fence bad enough, they could get it over the feeble objections of Pelosi and Reid.

But look at the votes. We (the side of sanity) got a ton of GOP votes on this one. The fence talk is nothing but talk. You guys are getting played for suckers by your own party. The reason is simple: This just isn't a big issue for most of us.

GODDAMMIT! BUILD THE FREAKING FENCE! NOW!

Don't give me this CRAP that it won't work. Do we give up building and using airplanes because they occasionally don't work and crash?

The freaking fence in San Diego works. We put up a double fence across the southern border with a minefield in between, it WILL work.

WE DON'T OWE THE MEXICANS OR ANYBODY ELSE A LIVING!

Goddammit! I will vote for ANYBODY who will put up a fence. I don't care if they're Nazis or commies or jello covered hippies! I'll vote for them.

I am so sick of these self hating Farkers who feel Americans should be punished for being a successful society. Want mexicans to succeed? Move the fark down there and help them give up their self destructive behaviors like widespread corruption.

I don't want America to have a billion people in it, turning it into another run down and depleted third world shiathole. What the fark are we bothering with things like national parks and endangered species lists when we seem so hellbent on wrecking the country with overpopulation?
