If more Americans knew how to cook instead of relying on pre-made meals from the frozen food section of the supermarker and fast-food/"casual restaurant" food that barely qualifies as food, they'd find that a good meal can indeed be very enjoyable.

I love food. It's a carnal pleasure, after all.

However, I also bike my ass off every day so I don't become a giant fat-tard.

Leftovers mean you don't have to spend an hour over a hot stove.

Having said that, I still cook better than my mom (mostly because my meals are not intended to be a vehicle for Frank's Red Hot sauce).

I wonder why. Are folks not eating things they like? Do they view the foods they enjoy as "bad"? Food is food. You have to eat, might as well enjoy it.

I'd rate myself an 8 as a cook. But that's pretty average for a cook.

It would have made far more sense if they said that people enjoy eating A LOT.

Only if someone else does all the cooking. All that work preparing and cleaning up ruins the eating experience for me.

The decline in enjoyment of eating has been greater among those who consider themselves "overweight" than among those who consider themselves "just about the right weight."

Honestly, I think it would be awesome to see someone seriously fight with their food-laden fork:

"NO I HATE YOU, YOU TASTE LIKE shiat, BUT I CANT STOP EATING YOU"

That would be worth a $5 gift card to Olive Garden.

Has anyone noticed that as the obesity epidemic has progressed, more and more words for man-boobs have come into being? It's like how the Eskimos have so many words for snow.

If you have a dishwasher, don't let a single utensil/bowl/spoon/etc touch the sink. Immediately into the dishwasher with everything.

Shiftless 2007-12-22 03:15:12 PM
Because 99% of restaurants now serve that frozen SYSCO crap. Also, I refuse to eat fast food. I eat in most of the time now. If I want to at frozen, dead food that you make by tossing it in a microwave, I'll have that nasty Schwann truck deliver food.

That just means that fat people are more self-conscious nowadays.

The rest of us are unaffected.

iamrobot 2007-12-22 03:21:38 PM
It seems like the more we stigmatize fatties, the more fatties we get. My upbringing has left me completely useless at dealing with this dilemma, it's not like there's ever been a plan b for emotionally crippling the lardasses :(

There's a simple reason for this -- There's a lot of garbage out there masquerading as food.

When my husband and I go out to eat, we will usually split an appetizer and an entree between us, saving a little money.

But the strange thing is the different reactions we get to this. Some people are actually embarassed to ask to split something, bring an extra plate, or whatever. I don't know if they think it implies poverty, but they show embarrasment at having to ask. Almost try to talk us into getting our own.."what if you get hungry?" "Oh, just get your own, this is too complicated" and the like.

However, the wait staff has never had a problem with the share plan.

Ever since we started doing this I've noticed the reaction, and have just been curious as to what drives it.

I dont think most people realize the whole SYSCO/CONagra stuff that goes on in the food industry. If applebees runs out of honey (corn syrup) mustard, they can go right across the street to chilis and get another batch. I hate eating out for that very reason. Good local places are fewer and further between these days. The same truck pulling up behind your beloved Olive Garden also has the local high school and prison on the same route.

I made a nice pot of beef vegetable soup last night from all fresh stuff. We were scheduled to have a blizzard today so I stopped at the Mexican grocery store on my way home and bought fresh meat and vegetables. Only canned items were beef broth and couple tablespoons of tomato paste. Nice to to eat "real" food once in while as my ex used to say. The cat and I just had a bowl while watching the snow come down.

hellphage [TotalFark] 2007-12-22 03:45:40 PM
The problem I've noticed lately is that even things that people generally "associate" with "healthy food" is becoming just as bad. Recently, at the supermarket, I looked at the label a can of diced tomatoes -- that is, by definition: tomatoes, in a can, that are supposed to be diced and that should be it. But, no... each "serving size" contained 70 calories. How is this possible? Looking at the ingredients: tomatoes, high fructose corn syrup, salt. WHY is it necessary to dump HFCS into a can of diced tomatoes???!!! Are there people who are demanding that their tomatoes have a more "sugary" flavor??

If one doesn't read the label, they'll just automatically think "they're tomatoes, which are good for me, therefore and I have a few extra servings without any problem."

This is yet another example of the food industry failing and/or deliberately misleading the consumers.

I LOL'd. Then I remembered that there was this guy in high school who dyed his hair just like Sisqo's. Everyone made fun of him, I think he came back the next day with it dyed his natural color.

It allows the producer to use lower-quality tomatoes and have them still taste OK. Basically it means you are getting ripped off.

/hates HFCS

I strongly suspect that the leftovers of the 61 per cent who don't want theirs will be taken care of by the 39 per cent who do.

The time is almost right to launch a vomitoreum/pick-up bar

Michael10101 2007-12-22 04:30:58 PM
I'm going to go with what one of the first guys said and that if people ate "good" food and not packaged dinners or fast/food, they'd enjoy eating a lot more. That being said, the last thing I want to do after working 8-10 hours is cook for another hour and then have to clean all the crap up. I need a wife.... sorta kidding but sorta not.

You could always invest in a vomitoreum.

See now when I cook, I usually clean the pots/pans/cooking utensils during the down time or as soon as everything is done cooking and the dishes when done eating. I also don't like dishwashers for exactly that reason. It would be a waste of water to run small loads, and I'd rather have everything clean immediately than wait till I have enough for a full load in a dishwasher.

/dishwashers may be fine for restaurants or huge ass families, but for everyone else it's just being lazy

You know what I've found? EVERYBODY is a good cook according to themselves.

The truly good cooks know they're good and therefore never verbalize this. The mediocre cooks will constantly tell you what great cooks they are.

Try the Fisher & Paykel dishdrawer dishwasher. It's very energy / water efficience, and it's not a huge capacity washer. It's perfect for two.

phoenyx74: When my husband and I go out to eat, we will usually split an appetizer and an entree between us, saving a little money.

We do the same thing. It's not about the money (I often make it up in drinks) -- it's about eating too much in one sitting.

And, you know, sometimes neither of us can even finish our half-portions -- it's more than enough.

The waiters don't like it though, even though, like I said, I usually buy several drinks.

Also, wife and I don't always want the same thing.
