I had a professor who I greatly respected, mentioned Frank Zappa regarding something and he said, "he died recently, didn't he?" I said, close to 15 years ago. "Well whatever, he was no Beethoven or Wagner or anything but I know who he is. Ya see, I'm hip."

Never again.

I won't even try to encapsulate how much I admire Frank Zappa in the space of a Fark post. But the next time you're in a bookstore, I would encourage you to pick up a copy of "The Real Frank Zappa Book," or to at least read the first couple of pages of Chapter 13 ("All About Schmucks.") One of the cornerstones of my personal philosophy.

There's a lot about the US I'm not that keen on, and I don't agree with some of what he stood for, but the guy was the embodiment of a "good American". If you're going to have freedom of speech, HAVE IT.

Miss you Frank. The world's a less interesting place without you.

Kindly leave a little tip,
And help the next poor sucker,

"What I'm asking people to do is simply this: In your own way, in your own life, every day, you are confronted with a piece of data. Don't just eat it up. Just think about it for a minute. You have the right to process your own information based on the equipment that you were born with. That's your right. That's real freedom. You have the right to make up your own mind. Now, if you choose to numb yourself, and to be bamboozled, you have the right to be bamboozled. But in your state of bamboozlement, you do not have the right to be a liability, because of your self-imposed ignorance, on other people who might want to do things the right way. If you voluntarily choose to be a numbskull, for whatever reason you have chosen it, that's fine. You have the right to be stupid, but you don't have the right to harm other people as a result of your stupidity. And you don't have the right to legislated your stupidity into existence, to force it on other people who have a clearer view of what things are."

You could also check out the Helsinki Concert volume of "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" (vol. 2?) which is the same band and similar setlist. It's where the guitar solo for "Inca Roads" on "One Size Fits All" came from.

mfaby: what a waste of talent; I wonder what he would have composed if he wasnt so angry?

This may or may not be trollbait, but I'll go for it.

Frank Zappa wrote over one thousand original compositions. His songs that directly address social and political issues could possibly make up twenty percent of his catalog at the very most. The "angry" ones you seem to be familiar with (such as Trouble Every Day and Dumb All Over), no more than five percent. He was not only a great composer, but a great showman, an amazing producer, and even a well-above-average guitarist. Lumping him in with the Angry Musician crowd, as though he was some sort of Rage Against the Machine for his generation, is an example of the purest and most dangerous form of IGNORANCE. Even when he got lyrically agressive, he NEVER let the gravity of the issues cloud his mind. Songs like SEX, Let's Make the Water Turn Black, and The Adventures of Greggery Peccary prove that beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Zappa is still the most well-rounded talent in the history of recorded music, and it makes me MAD when people like YOU pass him off as some sort of sad little man seething with rage.

You LOSE. Good DAY, sir.

Speaking as a person with a fairly conservative/libertarian political alignment, Frank is absolutely right in what he says here about censorship (the Reagan quip might be a little extreme), and John Lofton is a douchebag.

I'm a big Zappa fan and was even lucky enough to catch him in concert once - in Vermont! I was quite amused when I found out that one of my sons (Keith, named so in honor of Mr Moon) shares Frank's b-day. Happy Birthday to FZ and my oldest boy!!
