The more a candidate pisses off the liberals on the coast, the more the farked up inbreds in red state nowhere will vote for him. Doesn't matter if he's a pastor, a hypocrite, a liar about his weight loss or a dumbass that caused 2 women to get murdered, red staters would probably say hell yeah just to hear us coastal people keep screaming how wrong it is.

One way to fix this is to fix the election laws, cause they get about 55% of the vote with the way the electoral college is. Either that, or get a candidate some of them actually want that doesn't suck. Good luck with that.

Another way to fix it would be for red staters to quit listening to Fox, Limbaugh and the rest, actually try and learn from recent mistakes electing self-proclaimed moralists, and maybe just maybe quit voting with their church instead of with the best interests of their -- and my -- country.

Good luck with that too.

Whats it gonna be this time guys? 2 terms of Bush and all he got done, you gonna vote for another born again?

I am a Republican. Here is what happens next November if Huckabee is our candidate.

Huck vs. Hillary: I stay home and get inebriated. For four years.

Huck vs. Obama: I go vote... for Obama

Huck vs. Edwards: I get stinking drunk and go vote... for Huckabee.

I prefer none of those options. I wish we had a constitutional amendment requiring belief in evolution in order to serve in public office.

I also have $10 riding on the Huckster winning the nomination.

This is effed up... all the Republicans are praying for Hillary to win the Democratic nomination, and the Dems have their fingers crossed for Huckabee.

If both sides get what they are asking for, we're monumentally screwed in November.

Don't believe the hype folks, we all know that the real frontrunner is Ron Paul.

Also, what in the name of everything that's holy is the Hero tag for? In light of the fact that there's no pissible way that it would be for Fundie Minister and Weight Loss Guru Mike Huckabee, I can only assume that it's vacant. Might I nominate a TRUE American Hero: Ray Kroc, inventor of the McDonald's milkshake machine (or something like that)?

Lenny_da_Hog 2007-12-21 02:06:36 AM
Opening his tour in West Des Moines, Mr Huckabee, the son of a small town fireman, wasted no time in telling his audience that victory in Iowa would be a classic American underdog's success story.

Yeah. The people who made Pat Robertson the winner.

The "upset" being nomination to the position of victim to a Democratic landslide? If you want to give that "hero" status, okay.

If Huckabee gets the GOP nomination, the general election won't even be a formality. Religious fundamentalism is functionally dead in American politics for at least a decade.

Annoying as it may be to have a president always pandering to religious "value voters," it would be a relief to have a republican candidate that doesn't represent the corporate side of the Republican party.

Bush is supposed to have come from the evangelical traditon, but his real constituancy is the business community. Look at any legislation he passes, and it's always designed for their benefit. The wellbeing of regular people doesn't even figure into his political calculus.

When he needs to build support for legislation or policy he'll use religious voters, usually by getting them ginned up over some hot-button issue. But when push comes to shove, it's always the interests of the business community that win out. So for example just take the new mortgage regulations he instituted.

I'm not saying I like Huckabee, but at least he seems to be an evangelical Christian who cares about people.

Who gives a shiat what a 130,000 people in Iowa think?

If Huckleberry Hound were to somehow get the Republican nomination (which is unimaginable to me), then they can just cancel the general election and mail the keys to the White House to the Democratic nominee. There is no frickin' way he's going to win outside of some backwater bible thumpin' red state.

There's no such thing as red states or blue states, since the split in almost all states is close to 50/50. And while you accurately described many conservatives, there are enough that aren't like that that a guy like Huckabee isn't going to get enough votes. All it takes is five or ten percent of "conservatives" being driven off by his religious fanaticism, which is quite likely, and he doesn't have a chance in hell of winning.

Republicans show up at the polls and vote for their candidate No Matter What. He may deep-fry babies and eat them, and they may not like it, but they will show up and vote for their party's candidate. The blood of Jesus will wash away their sins if they elect a monster like they did with Bush- and "deybe gwinnupto hebbin."

Democrats, on the other hand, apply morals, values, analysis, careful consideration- and often do not vote for their candidate it he/she is less than ideal. Republicans aren't "hindered" by ethics or reason.

As much as I'd like to see the Republican Party trashed in the next election, I don't think any Democrat has a chance in hell of winning the next election.

Democrats (I'm one) mostly just whine about their candidate, while Republicans show up and vote.

Ace Frehley's Ghost: I think that you may be underestimating the Democrats' ability to snatch defeat from the iron jaws of victory.

As a Democrat, I totally agree. However, if that happens next year, it would be a historic, unprecedented fark-up of epic proportions. The Dem nominee would forever be known as the candidate who couldn't beat Huckabee. It wouldn't so much be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but more like snatching it from deep within victory's intestinal tract, having victory vomit it up along with a good deal of its colon, rebuilding it, polishing it, and placing defeat on the mantel for all to see while taking out a full-page ad in the NYTimes to publicize the close call.

You're demonstrating very well with your post why you lose elections too. Have you ever met anyone in your life with a superiority complex that you liked? No? Then why do you have one politically? It's killing your party.

Alveen 2007-12-21 03:29:13 AM
Huckabee is a FOTM and it is reflected in his fund raising. He appeals to Christians who think being devoted to religion is a voting issue and cote accordingly. Beyond this group he has little support and has no chance of winning the big godless states like FL, CA, the northeast or the white house.

Number41 2007-12-21 03:31:38 AM
I really don't understand the Huckabee hate, especially the fuss over the "Merry Christmas" commercial. I don't think he's over-pandering to the religious crowd, at least much more than any other Republican candidate. And even if he is, it doesn't seem fake - he was a pastor, it's who he is. It's fun to see everyone shiatting a brick over him, though.

This guy was a lot more amusing when he was appearing on The Colbert Report polling at 1%. It's not so funny when he's likely to secure the Republican nomination.

Argh2 2007-12-21 04:07:24 AM
Republicans are just reaping what they've sown, just like the Democrats in the 80's. The Dems pandered to the left and came up with Political Correctness and all manner of BS that only mattered to the Left, and lost the center. They weren't able to get back until Clinton. Republicans have been pandering to the religious Right, and now a centrist doesn't stand a chance. Whoever they nominate will be so out of mainstream the Dems SHOULD be able to slap them down without breaking a sweat.

That is, unless Jasonda's perfectly stated scenario comes to pass.

Normally I might agree with you but, I'm hearing more and more repubs. saying they plan on voting for Obama. My brother (a repub. political insider in TX), noted to me with some alarm that many in his group are planing to vote for Obama. For many of them it would be the first dem. they ever voted for.
