(Guardian.com) Unlikely Here's the latest story claiming the upcoming presidential election is so crucial it will get pretards away from their Wiis and out of mom's basement to vote for Democrats in droves. Just like they did in 2000 and 2004   (commentisfree.guardian.co.uk) divider line 46

The reason college students don't vote is because voting is a pain in the ass. My legal "place of residence" is in one city, my actual dorm is in another city two hours away, etc. I've managed to figure out what to do but they do NOT make it very clear on this state's (Georgia) website for voter registration.

(For the record: in Georgia you can register in the precint your college is in; you just follow the "normal" registration process and put your college mailing address instead of your home address.)

I wouldn't worry about it either way, submitter. With the sort of good will and respect President Bush has fostered among small government conservatives and moderates, a Republican presidency should be a slam dunk in '08.

TheConvincingSavant 2007-12-20 03:39:19 PM
Doesn't matter. Democrats have invested too much time and money with the fringe left and Bush bashing.

Regardless of who the Republican nominee will be, they'll have to paint him as Bush light because it's the only card they have to play.

And since they couldn't even beat the real thing, they've got little chance with a light version anyway.

Democrats will be out of luck until they can once again stand for something besides "we don't like him so vote for us." They had a chance with the war, but blew when they continued to bend to Bush's will.

At least you're in the same state for college. Well, hell, at least you're in A state. Then again, I'm still home on break during the primaries in my home state (NH).

Oh, here's a bit of awesomeness. I filled out a thing for an absentee ballot for the primaries about a month ago, and it just showed up at my mailbox (they send an e-mail when you get a package). On campus. I'm at home until January. The campus mailbox does a return to sender after 7 days.

So the primary voter turnout has just been reduced by one. Whee.

You would think that one of the political action groups on campus would setup a place to register or send out information on what to do.

Both sides will pitch this same type of message to their fringe elements (those who make the most noise about anything/everything). Whichever one can mobilize the most of their pretard fanbase in Ohio will carry the state and therefore the nation. Rinse, repeat.

I think we ought to keep track of your political predictions, it will make for good conversation in about a year's time,

For the record, if there were a Republican candidate that was halfway presentable I would vote Republican but as things stand Dodd has got my vote in the primary and I'm betting it will be another Hollywood Squares Election, I'll take Paul Lynde to block.

the youth vote cant compete with the organization and execution of die-hard christians rallying up the troops, loading them into droves into busses to vote for the latest republican candidate that is using them.

college students do not have voting day off, and will not vote as they are going to class and/or not going to class and toking up a storm and forgetting to vote

Haha, and as always, the Repubs conveniently forget 2006, preferring to selectively revel in their long-ago victories.

Fact is, they haven't got a shot at the 2008 election, even if Hillary is nominated. People are just that sick of the Republicans, and there are two dozen more GOP scandals coming down the pipe before the 2008 election. Their feeble, "Meh, both parties are the same" BS isn't going to mean shiat.

whidbey: Gore won the election in 2000, subby, I know it's hard for you to comprehend that.

There was some justification shortly after the election for thinking Gore may have won. There isn't any more; it's been settled. Truthfully, the election was simply within the margin of error, so it was (and always will be) impossible to state with certainty who actually won. Fortunately, in that situation, we have laws we follow to resolve matters, and that led to Bush being (lawfully) declared President.

Exactly. The Republicans who came into power complaining about the economy under Carter are going out exactly the same way if not worse. They can't really win because if they do, they'll take more shiat from the awful economy as it is. And since everybody is unemployed, nagged at, and pissed, Republicans can only offer their bullshiat opinions about avoiding reality instead of doing any good.

They're farked. With Democrats, at least we get something. With Republicans, we're just lucky to live in the 'best country in the world' that provides all sorts of benefits to the rich and the corporations (which are considered more human than 95% of the populace).

Republicans and their defenders can eat a dick.

I originally made the mistake of registering in my hometown. I dunno if I can register to vote in my college's city instead of my hometown after already requesting absentee ballots. (I got it sorted, btw, they're keeping the package for two weeks over the holidays instead of one.)

Persepolis: I know for a fact that in Virginia for the last congressional election, the "register online!" link on the official VA website was mysteriously incorrectly linked.

We theoretically have online registration. It's a .pdf you have to print out and mail/fax in.

s'mitter seems to think that the past couple of presidential elections have had disappointing turnouts. I wonder why?

John Kerry got more popular votes in 2004 than any candidate in any preceding election. More than Reagan, Kennedy, FDR, Lincoln, or Washington. "Vote or Die" and similar campaigns WORKED.

/"Die" won by a small margin
