I don't think he actually wanted to be president. He just wanted to make sure the xenophobes weren't overshadowed by the pro-torturists.

But who's thinking about the xenophobic pro-torturists. Who represents their interests? "We need a Gitmo for brown people! Today."

Tancredo. In what native american tribe is that name common? I'm thinking Sioux.

"Tancredo announced in October that he would not seek a sixth term in Congress, but hinted he would consider running for the Senate after his presidential bid."

Not to be picky, but isn't Congress both the House and the Senate, so maybe he WOULD seek a six term in Congress, just not a sixth term in the House?

/I guess that is being picky

Man, it's easy to win an argument when you get to make up what the other side says. In real life, it's harder.

However, our planet has way too many people as it is and we are running out of resources and arable soil and clean fresh water, it is a becoming a different kinda world where the need to protect what you have as a country is more important.

Tancredo was an extremist immigration alarmist, and any shred of support I might have had for him was tossed away with his "mexicans are coming to kill your children" ads. Tancredo further surprised me by admitting in an interview that he is globally anti immigrant, not just anti illegal immigrant. A nation of immigrants disagrees.

That said, we need a president who will be tough on the border, but without the hate rhetoric and without a desire to totally cut off legal immigration as well.

I wish Duncan Hunter would run less of a half assed campaign, he's actually a solid candidate on most issues with a great track record and a great deal of experience on domestic and foreign issues. He's just a bad campaigner and would get demolished in the general election if we nominated him.

That comparison is old, tired, and incorrect.

The Berlin Wall was meant to keep people in.
A border fence in the Southern U.S. would be used to keep people out.

It meant more to me when he announced he wouldn't be running for reelection in Colorado - something he had a chance of winning. The less of him and his ilk, the better.

Cue the republican dupe who will let guys like Tancredo get him all worked up in an emotional frenzy, but never make the connection that the republican party had all 3 branches of government and did nothing about illegal immigration. Well except use it as an issue to keep the faithful all stirred up. Cheap labor trumps all.

My brother worked for a Republican fundraising call center for a while. Most of the responses he got from the southern states ended like this: "I'm not giving you folks one damn dime until you close this border!" *Click*

And how.

mrjared 2007-12-20 12:12:58 PM
perhaps those random few extremists whose views line up with Mr. Tancredo will see this miserable failure of a campaign and realize that perhaps they are missing something, perhaps they don't get it...nah, it'll never happen.

I wonder if it's the same people who, just 50 years ago, ended every call with: "I'm not giving you folks one damn dime until you keep those uppity neeeeegroes out of my community!" *Click*

Back then, it was racism. Today it's nationalism/xenophobia.

Nope.

I'm trying to remember which casino in Vegas has it...I think it's one of the "Statio" casinos downtown.

OK. I'll start. We need an open and reasonable immigration policy that involves both 1. letting people in LEGALLY and 2. keeping them from getting in illegally. People are too focused on #2 and ignoring #1.

The root of the problem is that the people crossing over in the middle of the night are doing it because they have no way to enter legally.

Saiga410 2007-12-20 12:56:48 PM
So, is he going to endorse Obama now?

stiletto_the_wise: OK. I'll start. We need an open and reasonable immigration policy that involves both 1. letting people in LEGALLY and 2. keeping them from getting in illegally. People are too focused on #2 and ignoring #1.

People are focused on #2 for a number of reasons. They promised it in 1986 and we all know what happened. Display that there is a capability and a willingness at enforcement and then we can discuss #1. Also, just making immigration legal won't solve the problems that it creates and most likely will make some worse. The strain on social services won't go away and legal immigrants will be eligible for even more of them.

Cromar 2007-12-20 01:28:48 PM
Glad someone started a debate!

There are plenty of ways to legally enter this country, but most have a waiting list, fee, or temporary status associated with them. Some people are unwilling to go through that to come here. Often its just lack of education that causes them to default to sneaking across the border.

Of course, once we do finally secure the border, we still need to revamp legal immigration to make it easier for qualified people - families looking for a better life, hard working people, etc - to get across the border safely and documented.

birdboy2000 2007-12-20 01:42:16 PM
If we don't want economic refugees running across the border, maybe we should stop promoting income inequality worldwide.
