I don't understand why Randy Newman even exists. He is godawful.

Randy Newman? Way to stay relevant, Rolling Stone.

To be fair, however, their number 4 choice kicks ass.

Nemo's Brother 2007-12-18 10:06:10 AM
Rolling Stone is about as relevant to rock as MTV is anymore. Will somebody please shoot the damn thing and put it out of its misery? I mean HST got so tired of them he killed himself to get out of writing for them anymore.

Hey now, Rihanna was Stevie Nicks' best tune!

Rolling Stone, let me introduce you to my friend DIAF

/same goes for the band
//actually just mic, the rest of the band is ok

Minus a few gems, that is a sad, sad list.

And as far as Randy Newman goes, he's basically an old, songwriting Farker. His songs are the musical equivalent of trolling.

The Rhianna video has been removed from youtube. Some what amusing.

CZMisfitsFan 2007-12-18 10:50:41 AM
I think I've heard ten of those songs, that I'm aware of. I just checked out the Rhianna song and realized that I have heard it before, but never knew who it was.

And "Dreamworld" and "Dejalo" are much better songs from the Rilo Kiley album.

jayhawk88 2007-12-18 10:50:46 AM
You know I get that all music sucks except the stuff that you yourself like, but still, when you see stuff like Rehab as the #7 best song of the year, Britney Spears above the White Stripes, and Crank That in the Top 25, that's just wrong.

Uzzah 2007-12-18 10:51:47 AM
Already Disturbed: You ^, sir, are a twit.

And you, sir, apparently just arrived from 1979, which was the last year that Randy put out a witty, well-written, acerbic album, not some pink frosted Disney cupcake.

Welcome to the 21st Century. You will find certain fashion trends from your era still have a kitschy appeal. Nixon is dead, but what we have now is much worse. Herpes is still around. Don't bother seeking out Bo Derek.

Dear America,

Think yourselves lucky you don't have a national "talent" contest conveniently timed to end the week before Christmas so that some cockless wonder with a stupid haircut and unmasculine voice is guaranteed to be #1, then be flipping burgers the following year. Somewhere in the cosmos Lennon and Mercury must be weeping.

With love,
N.S.

Good to see QOTSA on there, at least.

Celerian 2007-12-18 11:08:39 AM
There are maybe a handful of actual good artists on this list. It's really sad when some of the BEST artists on your list include Nickleback.

Where are the talented artists? Where's Atmosphere? Where's Dir en Grey? Where's The Crüxshadows? Where's Norah Jones? VNV Nation? Nine Inch Nails? Rush? Tori Amos? Bon Jovi? Steve Vai? Smashing Pumpkins? KMFDM? Collective Soul? Arch Enemy? The Cult? Foo Fighters? Nightwish? Anne Lennox? Neil Young? The Eagles?

All of these bands have a hell of a lot more talent than the bands on Rolling Stones list... even topped better than some of them, and yet don't even make an appearance on the list. And every band I listed lost out to farking Soldja Boy? What the fark?

Mr_Fabulous 2007-12-18 11:17:11 AM
As far as I'm concerned, "Antichrist Television Blues" by Arcade Fire is the song of the year. Honorable mentions to Porcupine Tree's "Anaesthetize" and Andrew Bird's "Dark Matter".

Nine Inch Nails?
New album blows. Pretty much unlistenable.
Rush? I once liked Rush too, then I lost my virginity.
Bon Jovi? Do you live in New Jersey?
Collective Soul? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Good one.
Foo Fighters? They're on the list.

Yeah, the list did pretty much suck. I just wanted to be one of those "your music sucks" guys.

Not a bad choice. Others I'd include would be:

"Truck" by The Octopus Project
"Equestrian" by Les Savy Fav
"All My Friends" by LCD Soundsystem
"Bros" by Panda Bear

There are some on the list that do not warrant any comment (smashing pumpkins, the eagles, bon jovi and rush) but you have one name on that list that stands above all. Atmosphere is one of the best acts going, featuring one of the best mc's ever. Slug has written countless lyrics that are painfully insightful, uplifting and wholly depressing. I generally have very little time for hip hop, however Atmosphere and the majority of the Rhymesayer's label (eyedea, POS, carnage, murs) really blow me away. Another amazing hip hop talent is Sage Francis, very worthy of play and attention.

I tried to pick a robust list of artists that released albums in 2007. It was a mix, and I tried not to take into account their automatic gold/platinum fanbase.

As for the guy who has to knock on everything that I listed, just because he doesn't have the same tastes doesn't mean that my list is populated with anyone less talented. Ok, so I forgot Foo Fighters were on the list.

The NIN album was different, and I happened to enjoy it. Rush have always been pretty good. I've never cared too much for them, at least not enough to own an album. And I can still say that even years after losing my virginity and now being a father. Bon Jovi was one I added for being a top seller when it released and also being double plat, I believe. Collective Soul I liked on their first album, and it doesn't suprise me that their still putting out decent stuff. It's not breakthrough, but then again, it's worlds better than "Crank dat" or most of the shiat on RS's list.

RSE is a greatly inspiring group of rappers. Brother Ali released an album this year too. Slug personally told me I should check out the album, I just have not had a chance to.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime 2007-12-18 12:01:36 PM
I have found Slug to be one of the most generous artist out there. He always seems to take time to talk to his fans, and on several occasions I have had friends who met with him one on one, simply because they asked if he was around. He also brought one of my friends, who uses a wheelchair, up on stage, because he wasn't able to get a good spot, and was leaving the show. I would advise everyone one to check out atmosphere, brother ali, and eyedea.

Keep The Car Running is a great tune, but I think (Antichrist Television Blues) is more of a Springsteen-esque tune.

I literally have not heard one of those three songs.

And felt it important to say so.

/will listen any Pinback song. Do Want.

Uh, the top 20 or so actually make for a pretty good list, and for RS this isn't a bad top 100. Have you people forgotten what the purpose of a single is?

You guys are just a bunch of old farts, this list is spot on with everything, minus a couple of those stupid indie type songs, (Arcade Fire on a top 100 songs list? LOLZ!! Whatevs).

My only problem is Soulja Boy is not number 1. That track wuz my jam for the oh-seven, I was all supermanning dem hoes.

Rihanna? Has anyone actually heard her when she wasn't lip syncing? Every performance of hers that I've watched (for her bod of course), it's obvious she's a bit behind the audio track.

They put Randy Newman at #2 because the song is anti-Bush. RollingStone no longer cares if songs/albums are any good, its only if they're anti-Bush/Republican/conservative. Case in point: #2 album of the year is Bruce's new album. I'd rather listen to puppies get abused by a stick than listen to it again. But hey, Bruce is singing about Bush, so its obviously the greatest thing ever!

//Peter Travers even sucks now

grandjoke 2007-12-18 02:10:33 PM
yeah, even for Rolling Stone this is farking pathetic. I dunno why I bothered to read it.

Here's some albums from this year that don't suck

Strung Out - Blackhawk's Over Los Angeles
Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
Dethklok - the Dethalbum
The Swellers - My Everest
A Wilhelm Scream - Career Suicide

Of course, I'd be deluding myself to ever think that RS would even mention any of these bands but hey, I don't buy the darn magazine so who gives a flying fark?

I like both those songs, and several others from that disc. Which is why I make it the #2 album o' the year. (Spoon is #1 on that list.)

Oh, and I had Springsteen's album at #9. So there.

35 "Girlfriend"
Avril Lavigne
With its "I Want Candy" beat and bratty Hills-generation entitlement ("Hell, yeah, I'm the motherfarking princess," she chirps), this was '07's ultimate mall-punk shout-along

Ghaaaaaa

Does anyone have a ryder truck I can borrow? And the directions to the office that houses Rolling Stone?

RevLovejoy 2007-12-18 03:03:53 PM
Pfft. Pop candy crap like Avril, Britney and Nickelback? I remember when RS would mock bands like these. Don't get me started on that "Soulja Boy" abortion either.

Any list that doesn't include "Tick Tick Boom" is dead to me.

Some real late 1970s - early 1980s punks should go and show her what real punk is.

Rolling Stone still puts out 5 star "National Affairs" pieces. Last months article on the failed War against Drugs was killer and Matt Taibi's stuff is concentrated awesome.

No one cares about new music because it's almost uniformly terrible, but thats not really the magazines fault.

/Not Jann Wenner, I swear.

Nightwish is fairly commercially popular over here so they warrant at least a picture (with Tarja, so 2004) in RS' artist directory

/THIS to DPP being awesome

Wow, I didn't believe this list could possibly be as bad as it was being made out to be in this thread, so I had to look. Holy crap!!!!!

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2007-12-18 06:01:10 PM
wow. i think it wasn't until the Foo Fighters at number 47 till i found a song that A: I'd heard of, and B: Liked.

but i'll give rolling stone credit. they managed to compile a large list of absolute crap.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2007-12-18 06:03:38 PM
Celerian: Rush?

You realize this is Rolling Stone we're talking about, right?

They wouldn't notice good music. Period.
And they have something against Rush, I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Alex Chilton: Rush? I once liked Rush too, then I lost my virginity.

I'd get a second opinion on that.

The losing your virginity part that is.

theurge14 2007-12-18 06:37:30 PM
Fark U: so people still read Rolling Stone?

if you rely on others to pick music for you... YOU'RE DOING IT ALL WRONG!

If I wanted to keep up to date on Evil Republicans and climate change, I'd pick up a copy of Rolling Stone.

If I wanted to be exposed to new music, I'd pick up Spin, Blender or just visit an online music store. I might even go as far as to glance at NME.com before I pick up another Rolling Stone.

Nickelback

is inexcusable

Thank God QOTSA made it on the list. Era Vulgaris was by far my favorite album this year. Think they could have picked a better song, though. "Sick, Sick, Sick," "I'm Designer" and "3's and 7's" are all definitely better than "Make it Wit Chu."
