This beak injects a fast acting venom which is not harmful to humans.

Isn't it, by definition, non-poisonous then?

I want to secrete poison from the inside of my elbows.

...

that and to coat my stuff in poison.

Scary thing is that coral, or a harmless variant thereof, is considered a "good starter coral" for salt water fish tanks on some web sites.

Me too. I learned it, interestingly enough, from 8-bit Theater.

Not that anyone would ever extract the 4 micrograms necessary to cause death within minutes, and there is no treatment for it. That's just wrong.

Everything is poisonous in a high enough dose.

A songbird from New Guinea. It's skin as well as feathers contain a very powerful poison called: homobatrachotoxin

Wait, the bird is gay ? Or doesn't like gay people ? wtf ?

Admittedly, I did feel a little light-headed after licking the SOs hooded pitohui the other night.

Poison is not only venom.
"venomous" and "poisonous" don't really mean the same thing.
Venom, it be a poisonish that gets itself injected by the critter said to be venomous.

As in the famous dictum, "Sheep are venomous, haggis is poisonous."

Because, you know, haggis, when properly prepared, has no fangs, spurs, or stingers. Unlike sheep.

/the more you think you know...

I seem to remember the pitohui is poisonous due to something it eats. I think there are now two known poisonous birds, both in New Guinnea. My memory is crap.

Kejlina 2007-12-16 07:21:14 PM
Speaking of things that people don't realise are poisonous, can I just say that I've been hospitalised twice because of stings from caterpillars? In Canada, no less? We're not supposed to have poisonous critters here! Well except for brown recluse spiders....and eastern rattlers....But seriously, caterpillars?!?!

ceruleanblu: Scary thing is that coral, or a harmless variant thereof, is considered a "good starter coral" for salt water fish tanks on some web sites.

Because it's easy to keep, not because it's safe.

Usually they're pretty harmless unless you're fragging them. They'll squirt you and if it ends up in your eye or in a cut it can make you pretty sick or at the least be extremely painful. I haven't heard of anyone actually dying from it though, I think you have to actually consume the toxin. Most people aren't putting their polyps in their mouths (I hope...).

As long as you wear gloves and goggles the risk is pretty low.
Saltwater tanks in general can be hazardous if you don't pay attention or take safety precautions. All kinds of infections you could get or poisonous stuff.

I knew about the platypus, didn't know about the monkey. That's some weird shiat, venomous mammals. I always liked to wonder out loud, what if humans were venomous. Yeah, we can kill with weapons, and if you're fairly big, and fairly lucky, you can put the beatdown on someone fast and hard and kill them that way.

But what if we all had a little claw, right behind the thumb, just one quick scratch and your opponent is dead.

Maybe we'd all be a little more polite to one another. Or not.

Wolfmanjames [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 07:28:09 PM
Komodo dragons are not venomous per se. Their mouths are so filthy that their bite will cause infection.

I would have listed the short tailed shrew instead.

mkiii 2007-12-16 07:29:12 PM
whatshisname

does that make you a slow loris or a komodo dragon?

tiamet4 2007-12-16 07:29:49 PM
Good article except that Komodo dragons actually do produce a venom. It was previously believed that illness was due to bacteria in the mouth but this was found to be untrue in recent years

Who the fark has *heard* of a cone snail but didn't know it was venomous? Seriously.

Unclefarktard: This beak injects a fast acting venom which is not harmful to humans.

And no. It's venomous, but it's not harmful to humans. Poison doesn't have to hurt humans to be poison.

So, the deadly gila monster, known for its deadly, poisonous bite, is poisonous?

And the deadly komodo dragon, feared worldwide for its highly lethal saliva is also poisonous?

You go on to say that some insects, including centipedes and millipedes are also poisonous?

What next, are you going to claim that cobras are venomous too?

/Yes, I damn well knew the platypus is poisonous too.

give me doughnuts [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 07:44:17 PM
I knew about the platypus, but I had no idea about the Loris or the Piti...Pica...the bird.

Saw a docu about poisonous stuff in Australia. They interviewed a local who grabbed a platypus by the tail, and it spurred him in the hand twice. He said the pain was extreme, as well as the nausea.
He said he had no idea that they had the poison spurs.

I think the platypus refutes any claims of creationism, 'cause nobody in their right mind would make a creature like that. It can only come to be through a long series of mutations.

almejita [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 07:48:05 PM
Goddammit....VENEMOUS! Poisonous only refers to things that get into your system by ingestion.

Water poisoning is caused by excessive consumption of water during a short period of time. This leads to a disruption in normal brain function due to the imbalance of electrolytes in the body's fluids. Humans are made up of approximately 55 to 65% water, depending on gender, so water is necessary to survive. Water in and of itself is not toxic by any means, but rapid ingestion of a large quantity of water can dilute the careful balance of sodium compounds in the body fluids.
