Record melting of Arctic Ice this year. Where is your global warming now?

In the Arctic, apparently.

Meh. The way i see it, we pollute this earth at a shocking level. At a rate that can be lowered quite a bit without affecting our level of comfort.

Even if global warming isn't real (which i don't believe) we should at least be making an effort because we *can* and because we can benefit from it in so many ways. There is so much untapped money in non-pollution technology I am shocked that noone wants to get involved in it.

I think the bigger issue is "looking at what is happening" vs. "trying to prove a point by interpreting a narrow scope"

Or you could call climate change deniers retards. Either or.

Oh wow, you linked a report on Anarctic ice melting for an article on Arctic ice melting. I'm so convinced to your world view.

Sit down and shut up. People are trying to save you and, god forbid, your children's sorry asses. And you biatch at them?

intelligent people take facts and figures from all sides and then decide who makes sense and who is supporting an argument just to get a government grant to do questionable research using questionable "experts" (like hollywood movie stars) ...

The carbonic acid from the Co2 in our atmosphere is now changing the chemistry of our oceans. Making them more acidic and interfering with the creation calcium based structures. Namely, seashells. Basically, we are beginning to see the extinction of crustaceans and mollusks. I don't know about you all, but I'm filled with excited anticipation to see how the wingnuts are going to try to deny that. Here's my guess:

"Our planet goes through mass extinctions all the time. It's cyclical! The libtards just want to take away our wealth and make us live in huts! I'll do something about it when China and India do!"

Molavian: How long have accurate records of the Arctic Ice been kept?

They can drill Arctic ice cores back tens of thousands of years and are able to tell the temperature at which the ice layers formed, and the composition of the atmosphere at the time.

Are all the climatologists in every modern country across the globe getting these same government grants? That's a nifty trick.

JJ Money 2007-12-16 12:02:46 PM
You have to be pretty determined to seriously believe that man's activities have not affected atmospheric processes significantly. Try flying around a forest fire sometime, it will give you a good perspective on the fact that the atmosphere is finite, and not some enormous thing that has unlimited reservoir capacity.

I prefer to make a game of it.

Each year, I melt a little more than the previous year then the next year I try to top that.

What?

People who claim that Global Warming doesn't exist are complete idiots. They're like 9/11 Truthers; ignoring all the evidence without good reason.

The debate should center around how much of an effect we have compared to natural environmental factors. The Earth is strong, and can recover from almost anything. If I may bring up Krakatoa, you'll notice that for 3 years after the eruption, there was so much soot in the air that global temperatures were down 5-10 degrees Celsius. That's an insane shift in climate, but we came back.

I think a measured and realistic approach to climate change is necessary, but we don't need to break our own backs to try to make a change.

Also, carbon offsets are the biggest scam on the face of the Earth and anyone who buys them is a moron. Worse yet, you're actually supporting slave labor conditions. Sickening. (new window)

by David Rothbard and Craig Rucker

And there's the answer to my anticipation.

David Rothbard is President of the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), an organization he co-founded in 1985. Rothbard received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fairfield University.

Mr. Craig Rucker:

All right, just for fun let's play along...

From your article:

Like we said, this should shock no climatologist. But consider the "profession" of environmental journalism, which ran these headlines just one teensy month ago:

"Antarctic glaciers shrink" -The Baltimore Sun, April 22, 2005
[and 7 other articles about the same study]

Suddenly the tune has changed:

"As climate shifts, Antarctic ice sheet is growing" -Los Angeles Times, May 20, 2005
[ and 5 other articles about the same study]

Let's see the sources used:

Antarctic Glaciers Shrink
from The Baltimore Sun (Registration Required)
About 90 percent of the glaciers on the Antarctic Peninsula have shrunk in the past half century, scientists reported today in a study of an area long regarded as a "canary in the coal mine" because of its sensitivity to climate change.
Researchers for the British Antarctic Survey analyzed 100 satellite images and 2,000 aerial photos and found that since 1953, 212 of the 244 glaciers on the west side of the peninsula had retreated an average of about 2,000 feet. Another 32 glaciers in the region grew or advanced by about 1,000 feet in the same period.
"These glaciers do seem to be responding to climate change," said Alison Cook, a cartographer for the British Antarctic Survey. The findings were published today in the journal Science.

And...

As Climate Shifts, Antarctic Ice Sheet Is Growing
from The Los Angeles Times (Registration Required) via Sigma Xi Science
in the News
As glaciers from Greenland to Kilimanjaro recede at record rates, the central icecap of Antarctica has been steadily growing for 11 years, partially offsetting the rise in seas from the melt waters of global warming, researchers said Thursday.
The vast East Antarctic Ice Sheet - a 2-mile-thick wasteland larger than Australia, drier than the Sahara and as cold as a Martian spring - increased in mass every year from 1992 to 2003 because of additional annual snowfall, an analysis of satellite radar measurements showed.
"It is an effect that has been predicted as a likely result of climate change," said David Vaughan, an independent expert on the ice sheets at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, England.

(emphasis, mine).

What did you want us to learn from that, exactly?

Ummm, Fail?
The "accurate records" asked about would concern the SIZE of the ics sheet, not the composition.
You're trying to equate apples and bullocks there....

//Recent Fark posting of an apparent INCREASE in ice at the Antarctic

This has been irritating me a bit, but why are all global warming articles submitted to the Politics section in conjunction with the Geek section? This should not be a political issue. This is a scientific issue, and it should be treated as such.
If there is a specific government policy that relates the global warming, then yes, it should be in that section of Fark. But as this article stands, it has nothing to do with politics.

Fark is no better than Fox News and the other big cable news networks that Drew rails on in his book.

And if plant life thrives on this CO2, shouldn't that mean more oxygen?

Your link is from 2002 concerning data that ended in 2000. If you looked at more recent data, you'd see that the Antarctic has indeed lost ice.
