I clicked through about five of those before realizing that virtually every show listed is a steaming pile of crap and must have paid good money to be included in this "article."

Hey subby, a taboo Fark moment is linking to articles that take 15 farking web pages to cover.

Why do people insist on submitting slideshows? And why do they keep getting greenlit?

dittybopper [recently expired TotalFark] 2007-12-16 10:51:59 AM
Didn't they include the time on "Designing Women" when one of the characters called the other one "The Titty Monster"?

yakmans_dad 2007-12-16 10:52:00 AM
It's obvious from those incidents that breaking a taboo isn't very memorable.

Fail. Star Trek's interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura was breaking taboo.

This list is suck.

sand_in_my_vagoo 2007-12-16 10:55:27 AM
Is it just me or are most of those moments kind of lame?

this, in a big way. the only reason I looked at the entire slideshow was to see where this one ended up, and I was robbed, I tell ya! robbed!

the interracial kiss that HomerButt mentions above also was a pretty big deal in its day.

I came in here to say just that.

I wholeheartedly second your This. That was what I was looking for as well.

Where's George Carlin with the 7 words you can't say on TV. That's a lot more taboo breaking than half of that stuff.

Fail for linking into the middle of a list that has crappy navigation options.

Cubist Robot Party 2007-12-16 10:59:37 AM
All In The Family and maybe South Park are the only one on that list I'd say really did break taboos.

Epossumondas [recently expired TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:00:05 AM
Molavian: Fail. Star Trek's interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura was breaking taboo.

That's what I was expecting, too.

Malinki 2007-12-16 11:00:24 AM
I'm guessing they also skipped Leave It to Beaver?

And why do they keep insisting on submitting to "page 11 of 15" and crap like that?

Codyl 2007-12-16 11:02:02 AM
I actually thought it was pretty entertaining. nothing wrong with the 'slide show' format for articles such as this.

BlaineIsAPain 2007-12-16 11:02:09 AM
wow that list sucked. What about the South Park episode where they said shiat like 200 times or something? Or when they said n*gger like 50 times?

What am I thinking? No, EW is right. Deadwood is way more controversial.

Q. Steltanus 2007-12-16 11:03:01 AM
Hey! What happend to Phil Bloom (not safe for work)?!

earl_k [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:03:19 AM
What a crap list. Half were "big gay moments" or shows on MTV no-one has ever heard of.

How about the first time husband and wife weren't shown in separate beds? The interracial kiss above? NYPD Blue, All in the Family, fine, Ellen, maybe. How was In Living Color any more groundbreaking than any other Fox-shock programming?

I'm starting to find the "interesting" tag stupid and the "amusing" tag lame.

AaaPha 2007-12-16 11:03:27 AM
US TV has a LONG way to go. Taboo != FCC/Moral Majority freakouts.

Akessamenos 2007-12-16 11:03:43 AM
I'm also her to mention that this list sucks. Kids doing coke on TV? Who gives a crap? Interracial Star Trek kiss, now that I care about. List makers are stupid. I also complain about slideshows. Get off my lawn.

Kome [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:03:46 AM
Pocket Ninja: I clicked through about five of those before realizing that virtually every show listed is a steaming pile of crap and must have paid good money to be included in this "article."

I dunno. All in the Family and In Living Color were good shows. I just wouldn't call In Living Color edgy at all, so I don't quite know what taboos it broke, aside from landing Jim Carry a career.

LadyHawke [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:05:34 AM
This list sucks for not including I Love Lucy. That was the first time a TV character (let alone the actress playing her) was expecting (they never used the word "pregnant").

ignite ice 2007-12-16 11:06:51 AM
I made like four clicks before reaching the end of the article and realizing yet another link had pointed to anywhere but the beginning of the list.

Hint: if an article doesn't get greenlit, there's a chance the article just plain sucks in the first place. No headline will change that. Consequently, this falls into that category.

skylabdown 2007-12-16 11:07:33 AM
I don't think the article writer is aware of the definition of "Taboo."

A taboo these days would be an openly racist comment on a show made by a character that wasn't portrayed as a buffoon.

Another would be a character speaking about how much they love to hunt and shoot guns without being portrayed as an ignorant redneck.

Oh.. and how about having some Islamic terrorist bad guys instead of neo-nazi skinhead terrorists?

Let's see.. how about the taboo of not thinking the whole "busy mom" aesthetic is endearing?

Two guys kissing is not a taboo anymore.. neither is two girls kissing or drug use... LAME!

dj42 2007-12-16 11:07:41 AM
That is the worst designed web site I've run across in awhile. I had to click something along the order of 3030204 times to see all 15 of those, and then since I stumbled across another list, a few more hundred thousands times to scroll back to that.

Hasn't anyone heard of logical, hierarchical navigation and pages with functional content areas bigger than 400px x 400px?

Mouser 2007-12-16 11:08:17 AM
Methinks subby can't quite tell the difference between "taboo breaking" and "vulgarity".

Mr. Blather 2007-12-16 11:08:52 AM
Hmmm. Leaves off pretty much anything done by the Smothers Brothers; anything that happened on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman; anything on Fernwood Tonight; and pretty much all of Soap (including one of the earliest openly gay characters on television).

Also, what about Murphy Brown's baby on Murphy Brown? That one actually made a political appearance in Washington, DC thanks to Dan Quayle.

luckybastard 2007-12-16 11:08:55 AM
I remember 'Undressed'. That was a pretty risque show for television, I think. All sorts of 'deviant' sexual behavior that should have drawn the ire of all sorts of religious groups.

MinnesotaJack 2007-12-16 11:09:23 AM
How about the time this last Spetember when Minnesota Jack unplugged the family tv and carried it into the basement where its been ever since?

No shorties in MJs family ever bothers to watch it now. They are busy doing their homework like they should have been all along

Mugato [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:09:30 AM
Molavian: Fail. Star Trek's interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura was breaking taboo.

Apparently it didn't qualify because it wasn't about teh ghey.

It was also missing The Flintstones - first couple sleeping in the same bed.

Scanlon Kelsey 2007-12-16 11:10:34 AM
The Munsters slept in the same bed. Lucille Ball continued making 'I Love Lucy' in her condition (pregnant)

There were real pioneers before The O.C., for chrissakes.

(Betting the author is 22, and this is their first job out of college. "Hey, I remember Undressed, Tom Green and Jackass!")

Yes - There is no reason on earth to have these types of lists except to please advertisers. It's the farking internet -- why not have all the info on ONE PAGE?

lexslamman 2007-12-16 11:11:28 AM

r1niceboy 2007-12-16 11:11:33 AM
being from britain, I find all this alsofarkinglutely hilarious.

Even the Showtime version of Queer as Folk was pussyfied, and that has some majorly ironic cojones dangling beneath it.

Please show This Life, the original Queer as Folk, Torchwood, or any other even half serious Brit show, and see the yanks collectively shiat their pants.

TheAbstractor [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:12:08 AM
About 9 or 10 of those are Time/Warner vehicles. Hmmm?

Secret Agent X23 2007-12-16 11:12:38 AM
skylabdown: I don't think the article writer is aware of the definition of "Taboo."

I also don't think the article writer is aware of the definition of "moment." Most of the items on the list are descriptions of the types of things that happened throughout the run of the series. A "moment" in this context would be a single event that stands out from the other stuff that happens.

That was a great list... FOR ME TO POOP ON!!

Rotten_Peaches 2007-12-16 11:13:34 AM
I've actually watched about 4 of those. I've seen at least a few minutes of an episode of maybe 3 others. Some of the rest I've never even heard of. Maybe I need to get in more.

On second thought--I'll just keep ignoring most of what's on TV.

stiletto_the_wise 2007-12-16 11:13:53 AM
The story for each show is basically the same:

1. Actor does marginally offensive thing on a lame, failing TV show
2. Religions and "family" groups go apeshiat, complaining to anyone listening
3. Show gets decent bump in ratings.
4. Everyone forgets the show and the stunt within a year.

theteacher 2007-12-16 11:15:22 AM
I see no show about truth-telling, because that's the only taboo left.

fred_chan 2007-12-16 11:15:29 AM
Pocket Ninja: I clicked through about five of those before realizing that virtually every show listed is a steaming pile of crap and must have paid good money to be included in this "article."

More likely that every show was a pile of crap, so they all resorted to doing wildly "controversial" things in order to get ratings.

Kome [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:16:18 AM
LadyHawke911: This list sucks for not including I Love Lucy. That was the first time a TV character (let alone the actress playing her) was expecting (they never used the word "pregnant").

It was also, I think, the first show to show a married couple sleeping in the same bed as opposed to two beds seperated with a little space. They only allowed it because Lucy and Desi were married in real life.

Yea, this list blows. About the only show that belongs on there is All in the Family.

Chummer45 2007-12-16 11:16:37 AM
Pretty much everything about this greenlight is chock full o' FAIL.
