I'd be interested to see if that winning bid ever actually results in a payment.

Anyone got a link to the actual auction?

He'll really be surprised when the check arrives and it's written for $10,000. Then the purchaser will as him to send the difference back with the guitar (because he trusts him). About 20 days later when the international check bounces, he'll really understand what happened.

Its funny how this has been posted about 20 times and now gets the greenlight.

If anyone is stupid enough to actually ship before verifying payment has cleared and the money is yours deserves what they get.

Oh and I second the shenanigans.

My wife is a bank manager, she sees a couple people a week fall for this scam.

eBay listing (^)

When the auction was first put up there was a main page article but I can't find the thread.

Thanks. The bidding pattern looks fraudulent as hell, but the guy's got good feedback. Wonder how this turned out?

No clue. The seller added info in the auction that he wouldn't pressure the buyer if they didn't pay and I don't see any feedback on either of them from the auction. He probably bid high knowing he wouldn't get bad feedback.

The dude would also probably accept any reasonable payment above the games actual worth. The only problem is that doesn't eBay demand a commission on these sales?

Doesn't matter. If it's a rule in their house, it must be enforced. Otherwise, you risk your kid thinking that they can get away with just about anything.

$9,000 will buy a lot of pot.

cambie [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 12:30:47 PM
Yeah, that'll learn him.

Here's what you just taught you son there dickweed. Dad's an asshole, and I need to hide the fact that I smoke weed from him big time now, or he may never buy me anything again.

Notice I never said "Oh crap, maybe pot is bad, I'll quit now before my life is ruined"

Here's a thought. Teach him that pot is not as bad as many other things he could be ingesting. But that smoking, anything, is not good for you lungs, so you really should try not to do it too often. Or maybe tell him to google the word vaporizer. Also teach him that other drugs, including cocaine, meth, heroine, and many others are much worse for your body and are much more addictive than even alcohol. Then when he grows up and becomes rational, he'll realize the truth.

Oh, ok, it's a 15 year old. Like he's going to be rational. Punch him in the gut and lock him in his room. When he comes out, roll up joint out of his stash and smoke it with him. Then comment on what shiatty weed he buys.

crap, what are prices in Houston? Even at 400/ounce, that would be 22 and a half ounces. That would last me a while.

I don't understand this Dad at all. Why would he buy Guitar Hero III and have an issue with his kid smoking pot? I'm pretty sure a bag of weed is an optional accessory for the game. Can you be a guitar Hero and not be stoned? No.

Sex, drugs, and rock and roll (not sold separately).

Its not a scam. I like to think of it as a tax on stupid.

You'd have to be high to pay 9 grand for a game.

I brought a copy of this for my niece on amazon about a week ago. Is the wii one that much harder to find than the ps2 one?

Of course the kid likes smoking pot and playing guitar hero. They go together perfectly.. it's like being surprised that a DnD player loved cheetos and mountain dew.

/has played a lot of guitar hero

This reminds me of that scene in Bad Santa when Bernie Mac finds the kid robbing his store, so he makes the kid give him his mp3 player.

Jamesac68 2007-12-16 02:17:38 PM
So how is the Wii version of Guitar Hero III scarce? You couldn't move for tripping over them as of a week ago, plus Activision is replacing everyone's copy with one that has the ultra-advanced feature of stereo sound.

Also, it's all about Rock Band now. Bye, Guitar Hero, you were a great stepping stone towards bigger and much better things.

Great Janitor 2007-12-16 02:18:08 PM
I'm not sure if $9000 is real, but due to the game's popularity, and it's rarity, I know that odds are, the father's profited off of this. Much the same way that anyone who managed to buy a Wii this year knows that they can sell it for almost double.

/worked at the CompUSA warehouse until this week
//90% of the Wiis we had in stock never got shipped out, they were bought up by the warehouse employees
///fired on Wednesday due to the whole 'going out of business' stuff
////starts a new job, with a $1.50/hour payraise on Monday

I bet his son is the high bidder, so he really has the last laugh in the situation.

Did anyone else notice the photo on the auction is dated 2006......and he says he just bought it. Something doesnt add up there.

clevershark 2007-12-16 02:21:28 PM
You can bet that the son will be very observant of his father's life from this point forward... Dad better be a real-life saint.

Something about this story smells though, considering that you can today find a GH3 for the Wii for barely over $100 (at the time me writing this).

Perhaps Dad needed a way to explain slightly-questionable money (perhaps proceeds from gambling which he was forbidden to do by his wife, for example) being in his possession and set up a fake auction? It's really not that hard. All you'd need is a few proxy addresses and you can set up as many accounts as you want without Ebay's system red-flagging those new accounts. Then you could set up a fake auction with several "individual" bidders, and then spread the word through blogs, etc. All of a sudden the $9k in Dad's pocket suddenly has a "legit" story attached to it.

I'm not saying that's what happened, just that the setup sounds a little suspicious.

bwesb 2007-12-16 02:21:53 PM
If Dad gets the money, he should take $5,000 and invest it to see if he can bump it up to about around $7,000 or so, then, by the time his chiba-loving kid turns 18 give him the roungly $7,000 and kick his ass to the curb so he can buy his own house, with his own back yard and then smoke all the bomb-ass ganja he wants.

AliasUndercover 2007-12-16 02:21:58 PM
Hell, the people selling drugs should just sell Guitar Hero instead.

My camera does the timestamp thing, and no matter how many times I sync it (comes with a USB docking station), the time never comes out right. Pissed me off to the point I just turn the feature off.
