Good for those states. Now, if we could only get some states to a point where they could refuse Federal education dollars, the travesty that is NCLB (and everyone associated with it) may finally begin to die a slow, painful death.

Because sex is sinful and should only take place in the confines of a marital bed to conceive a child.

Or an airport men's room.

In the missionary position, underneath a blanket and with the lights off. Care should be taken to get it over with as quickly as possible and no expression of pleasure should be allowed to escape.

History out of context is trivia. You didn't learn history without forming a moral framework to inerpret it, or you simply memorized simplistic events and recited them on a piece of paper.

Ah, if only a teacher was brave enough to truly teach history.

My teacher in high school started the sex ed class with, "Legally, I can't teach you this. If you're offended by talking about condoms and birth control, you are free to leave now."

Whose moral framework? The party that you agree with or the one you oppose?

In a way, you're right. In order to understand history, you have to understand the people and their times, and their motivations.

Trying interpret history through a skien of ideology though is called propaganda though, is less effective for actually understanding events. It is very good though for trying to tie up justifications for actions though.

How are you going to empower a christo-fascist state if the states won't help funnel the money from the embezzlers to the 5th column?

incendi: My teacher in high school started the sex ed class with, "Legally, I can't teach you this. If you're offended by talking about condoms and birth control, you are free to leave now."

A friend of mine who taught in a public high school placed a bowl of condoms on her desk and left the room. She was fired, despite the fact that at the time there were at least 15 students at that high school who were pregnant.

Some posters have joked about the Right's response to this issue. I hear it every day. It's "teaching kids about sex and making contraceptives available is giving them permission to start having sex." Studies indicate this simply isn't true. I'll pause now while you recover from the shock of finding out something the Right peddles isn't true.

Better? Ok, let's continue. I can respect people who oppose contraception on religious grounds, but even if you think birth control is flat out wrong, wouldn't you rather have Johnny use a condom now than see him driving his girlfriend to the abortion clinic two months from now? Or to the AIDS clinic two years from now?

Teenagers often have the sexual urges of an adult without the knowledge and skills to deal with those urges and make the best choices. We have to help them navigate the risks. I realize it's tough for parents to accept the fact that their precious snowflake is growing up, but it simply has to be done.

Carth 2007-12-16 12:41:46 PM
The obvious reason for the abstinence-only laws is that if the republicans can't sleep with high school kids they don't want anyone else to be able to either.

I thought tears prevented AIDS. Well, gypsy tears anyway.

From TFA:

"We're concerned about this," said Stan Koutstaal of the Department of Health and Human Services, which runs the program. "My greatest concern about states dropping out is that these are valuable services and programs. It's the youths in these states who are missing out."

Which I thought was the whole point of abstinence-only sex education? I cannot recall who, but some FARKer referred to abstinence-only sex education as the logical equivalent of potty-training a child by telling them to "just hold it".

A perfect analogy. Here we have a biological impulse, which should be expressed only under controlled circumstances, which we are telling people to ignore, which is more or less impossible.

you're right. if i didn't know that premarital sex was icky, what on earth is the point of learning about the napoleonic wars?

i mean, you have to put these things in the right context.

I had a professor in college who was involved in a program in the 90s which would go into Abstinence Only schools and teach the kids a comprehensive sexual education as a some sort of experiment. Basically when she got there kids thought that if they orgasmed together it would null and void any birth control taken. And after some prying she discovered that the girls thought you had to take birth control pills only before you were going to have sex and would sneak pills from their moms' or sisters' own package.

This is what happens when heresay rules the playground.
