Here in southeastern Ontario we hard getting hammered too. Ice pellets all morning and it turned into a whiteout quality blizzard about an hour ago. Supposed to be the worst winter storm in 60 years. Now if you'll pardon me, I have to go clear the driveway for the first of probably a half-dozen times today.

/ if anyone can read this, send booze

I am so lucky I got a flight out of Toronto last night. I heard it's going to be hell later today.

Canadian Canuck: I heard it's going to be hell later today

It's friggin' nasty out there and it's really eerie - there isn't a single car on the road. Aside from the occasional snowblower, it's completely silent.

40below - "it's really eerie - there isn't a single car on the road. Aside from the occasional snowblower, it's completely silent."

That's my favorite time to go four wheeling (Jeep). Driving on the roads at the end of or just after a major snow storm, it's like a beautiful post apocalyptic world without people.

I'm in RI this weekend - a foot of snow with about six inches of ice on top.

No church today, baby.

Messy haps out here in Jersey... quite a bit of shoveling to take care of this morning.

Hiymenator [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:19:59 AM
Getting shat upon in southern New Hampshire. And I had to drive to work this morning. In a VW Golf. Yeesh.

keithgabryelski [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:20:34 AM
yeah, there's a metric ass-load off snow out there, now.

Brookline, MA 2.5 miles from center of Boston.

skinink 2007-12-16 11:21:32 AM

I wend to the supermarket this morning, and it was awesome: no one shopping, fast checkout, and food wasn't gone from the shelves like you'd expect. The only problem I had was walking home, because the wind was blowing in my face. And there were hardly any cars on the road, so that's where I walked.

I did see a couple of people try to drive their cars over snowbanks, and one driver was fishtailing all down the street. Haven't these people ever experienced a New England winter already?

I found out yesterday that my flight this morning was canceled. Now I just have my rescheduled flight tomorrow still goes :(

The Gods hate me. I moved in on Wednesday and I've gotten 17 inches of snow since then... and it keeps coming.

Any volunteers to come help shovel?

/I can has snowblower?

Feh, I've seen worse here in Boston.

Besides, this afternoon, we're going to heat up the area by watching the Pats burn the Jets.

Petrograd 2007-12-16 11:23:43 AM
Whatever,

I'm in Buffalo and we were threatened with a foot and a half. I'm looking outside at 11:30 and there's maybe three inches on the ground. Maybe this afternoon will have the big dump, but this has been a big yawn to me so far.

Still, I'm not dumb enough to go outside and drive in it.

andrewabc 2007-12-16 11:24:43 AM
Atlantic Canada is looking forward to this storm. The last one we had 2 weeks ago knocked out power for a week.
I'm sure there are lots of damaged power poles that are going to break during this storm.

/clothesline still has 2 inch thick ice on it

Johnny Ringo 2007-12-16 11:24:57 AM
In central mass its an absolute mess. Snow covering everything, ice on top of that, and not a plow to be seen. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go fire up the Sportsman 400.

maniacbastard [TotalFark] 2007-12-16 11:26:07 AM
I am from New England but I now live in Houston. We've got a saying around these parts:

"You don't have to shovel sunshine."

But then we get hurricanes and stuff, which sucks too.

Is that the status quo in the northeast? Here in the upper Midwest, we get less snow than you guys, but every small town has a fleet of public and private snow plows. It seems like six inches of snow shuts down the northeast, while out here it's just known as "Wednesday".

Of course, the only time I pay attention is when you guys shut down, so it may just be observation bias.

I live in Pasco County Florida and I'm laughing here...

What's that? A tornado? Holy crap...

Sorry about the smart arse snow remarks y'all, I gotta go...

The Duke of Carrot Flowers 2007-12-16 11:31:30 AM
Yeah, Montreal's getting hit pretty hard too. This is starting to add up: 130 cm of snow in two weeks.

fudgereport 2007-12-16 11:31:32 AM
Moved from Albuquerque to North Chelmsford MA this summer. Bought an electric snowblower since my driveway isn't that long. What a mistake that was. It would have been fine if this storm hadn't be preceded by last week's build up.

Still better than living in Albuquerque!

Espertron 2007-12-16 11:32:37 AM
I feel your pain. Here in Raleigh, it's down to the 40s!

/It was between 70-80s last week.
//T-shirt weather.
///Should be back in the 70s within a week acc'd to Weather.com.
////If any New Englanders make to Raleigh... First pint will be on me. That should warm ya up.

Afternoon_Delight You seriously are not that stupid. I hope.

If so I would suggest reading about how small perturbations can affect a balanced system.

Depends on the area but when you get a layer of ice pellets that mold into a layer of ice followed by an expected heavy amount of snow and high winds people would rather just spend the day inside. You can try getting around but it will be touch and go with everyone else at home. If everyone did their routine as usual then everyone would get no where because the roads are a little more congested than the midwest

Is that the status quo in the northeast?

no, they just wait until after the dump happens on weekends... b/c people are smaht enough to NOT drive in it for the most part.

however, that was not the case thursday night when i drove home from NYC at 9:00 p.m. i was within spitting distance of my house in hartford, but the last 2.5 miles took longer than the first 140 miles.

Absolutely jack shiat has happened in Pittsburgh... including any weather changes.

boring storm.

Frank Anthrax 2007-12-16 11:38:56 AM
Pretty bad in Ann Arbor. I'd say we're at about 7 or 8 inches.

/that's what she said

copperheadclgp 2007-12-16 11:38:57 AM
Eh, I've seen much worse. The only crappy part is that eventually the snow is supposed to turn to freezing rain which royally sucks... Our plow jockey just finished clearing out the initial load so whatever falls from now till then shouldn't be too awful to move.

The biggest problem is that people do not plan ahead. Every other car has bald tires, or no window scraper (students, I'm looking at you), or bad windshield wipers with no fluid in the tank, or a combination of the above.

If you identify with the above: please stay off the road until you get the brains required to drive in NE.

Middlesex County, MA represent!

We're not getting that much snow out, really. Its just wispy powder now. I gotta shovel out my mailbox again though ;_;

After 8 inches or so it's turned over to sleet here on MA North Shore. Just in time for it to freeze up and make a really nice mess.

Walked downtown and everything was closed except one cafe that I had never been to, and now it's my new favorite breakfast place. My brilliant meal this morning makes that slop that I used to get seem like eating the dirty underpants off a homeless man.

Dagda: The Gods hate me. I moved in on Wednesday and I've gotten 17 inches of snow since then... and it keeps coming.

It could be worse. Two weeks after moving into my house in '01, the town raised the property tax rate by 25%.

I'll take using a snowblower over paying taxes any day.
