Funny too because there actually is a town in Alberta called Acme. ...Or was that the joke?

The_Fuzz 2007-12-15 07:26:01 PM
That's my home town! We lost 2 cats to coyotes. Comes with the territory, though. . living in a mountain town. I used to sit in my living room watching them walk up and down the street. Sucks they are attacking now, though. They used to be scared of any noise.

This is what happens when you tolerate coyotes. They start with the cats and then attack dogs in packs and work their way up to kids. I grew up in the rockies and nobody tolerated coyotes and cats would live 15 years outside. Here in liberturd SoCal the whiners go on about how the coyotes were here first blah, blaah, blaaah and then don't understand why their cats don't last 15 months. I've seen coyotes everywhere including on PCH in Santa Monica next to the Loewes Hotel. They have attacked kids and eaten dogs off leashes while they were being walked and more importantly they're a rabies and plague reservoir so if there is ever an outbreak there will have to be large scale extermination anyway so why not do it now.

DangerousDave 2007-12-15 08:31:39 PM
Just put a couple of little kids out as bait. They make that annoying shrieking noise that sounds a lot like a predator call so get the kids to shriek and shoot the coyote as it approaches. Problem solved.

Are you posting to whine on an internet forum rather than doing something? Good job!! You totally solved the problem by biatching to farkers.

Buy yourself a damn crossbow, some broadhead bolts, and kill the coyotes. Because it doesn't make sound, so no one's going to call the cops about gunfire, and if it's such a 'pandemic' as you describe, no one will care about a few coyote corpses.

If you're not doing something, you're worse than the apologists, because you admit there is a problem. So either do it, or shut up.

It's to the point here in Ohio that Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources, the agency that licenses hunters, have requested that all hunters, regardless of season, shoot and kill any and all coyotes and wild pigs they happen across. No limit, no closed season. Just shoot them. I am seeing coyote roadkill along the interstates lately. I've lived here all my life, [40+ years, get off my damn lawn], and I've never seen that before. Coyotes are generally too reclusive and too smart to venture out onto the roads like that, but when the population gets too dense, canids do weird things.

But the urban coyotes in SoCal are UNREAL.

If only there were a small implement with which to smite these wily coyotes that prey on small humans. Something like a rifle, but maybe hand-held. Something that one could carry on a belt. HMMMMMMM. If only.

Strangely enough, I have never seen a wild pig in Ohio (im not doubting that they are here, but I have just never seen one) and I grew up on a hog farm....
/saw my dad shoot a coyote though, with a single shot .22 from about 50 yards...damn I was impressed.

stevejove, you'd think if they were that dense the coyotes would start eating the hogs or the hogs would start eating the coyotes.

If people come into contact with an aggressive animal, Bidniak said it's important to stay calm.

"You have to be aggressive, and it sounds odd, but you make yourself appear larger and wave your arms above your head," she said.

You know these are crazy times when "stay calm" means "wave your arms above your head."

First i will deal with oscartamerz: I agree - the only stance to take with coyotes is a firm stance. The breed fast and the move fast. They ARE NOT A SCAVENGER - they will hunt small animals up to baby deer. Wolves dont eat farmer browns livestock, coyotes do. The urban coyote problem is a tricky one though. I know Vancouver has been having a big problem.

kroonermanblack: SHUT UP. Buy a crossbow? WTF would you do with a crossbow? definitely not hunt coyotes. THEY ARE SMART. Second people are going to see you killing coyotes wich really isnt going to go over well with safety officials. I mean what could go wrong with amateur sportsmen hunting in an urban environment? You have never killed a coyote. You see - coyotes are one of the quickest adapting and most intelligent creatures in North America. The faster you kill them the faster they breed. Succeed in killing lots? the coyote will get physically smaller and produce more offspring. They are evolutionary gods. But i guess i should be out trying to kill coyotes right now... Mayhaps ill use my silent ninja gear and shinobi smoke bombs to elude their scences or some goddamn crap. Once you turn 12 go out and TRY to kill a coyote with a crossbow. God, you probably kill magpies using a 20 year old pellet gun too!

-------------------------------------------
When i was a younger man, contemporaries of mine would go skidooing in large groups hunting coyotes out in the snow covered fields. I didn't like it cause young men can be pretty cruel to the things. (running them over with their sleds and such - i dont mind, just kill it FIRST.) I would say put a bounty per coyote but that might not work somewhere as vast as Alberta - Best thing to do is get a dog. They farking HATE coyotes. Not a small dog - get a golden retriever, or something that size. They bark a ton at night but thats cause they are chasing coyotes. If you have a few dogs you dont worry about coyotes eating your cats. Or kids.
On another note i live in the peace region and we would have coyotes ALL the time. They are a really cool animal when you see them out in the fields trotting around snapping up mice. But yeah - dongs wont solve the problem so have a 22 in the closet like every other freaking Albertan i know.

But whatever im rambling. Im pretty amazed that the coyote problem has gotten that bad though.

Mind if I email you with a few questions about that area?

I have been looking at a family holiday in Banff/Lake Louise for awhile but would appreciate a locals input on the hotels and activities.
