Had to look twice at that ipod on the right...something looked fishy.

I'm not an animal rights activist, and even I see that as cruel

How about the constant vibration of the tank due to the sound? Isn't that cruel too? Maybe I missed it in the article. I think this seems silly anyway.

Anton Chigurh 2007-12-15 06:38:08 PM
I taught my beta to do simple tricks. I've read of someone teaching one to go through a hoop for food. I got mine to flare at me and follow my finger for food. Every time I walked in the room he would flare up - he was a piggy. His name was Aryan because he was all white.

Unfortunately he one day shamed his family somehow because he committed seppuku by jumping out of a 1.5" open slot on the lid of his tank into our sink. :(

Fark those stupid fish. It is just a fish, it doesn't have emotions, it can't feel anything but rudimentary pain. Blast the hell out of it with Backstreet boys, then light it on fire and throw it in a trash pile and get another stupid fish to torture over and over again!

I think you are all missing the point here. The fish are not American or British. They don't have souls and can be treated however we like to improve our own lives, however marginally.

I hate to see these poor little guys in those tiny tanks they sell them in - or pet shops that store them in plastic cups. At least give the thing room to swim around, like fishbowl sized or something.

Fat Dave 2007-12-15 06:43:58 PM
My daughter has one of these fish -- in a good-size goldfish bowl. I can't imagine putting it in something as small (and vibration prone?) as this speaker.

Yet it appears that this device uses a standard audio connector and it not proprietary to the iPod.

At least you thought you had a valid point once upon a time, though.

Yes, it is. It just involves artificial selection rather than natural selection.

I don't know about you, but this is pretty disgusting even to someone who couldn't give two sh*ts about animal rights groups. The issue here is that you're taking a pet, cramming him into a tiny little container as a home (not just for bringing the little guy back home to his tank), with a relatively ginormous-ass (to him) speaker underneath him, all in the name of making a hip device that mimics the slim profile of the iPod.

Um, what are you smoking? Just because a breeder does the selecting doesn't mean that certain traits can't be bred into a species over time. It's still selection, just not natural selection.

Correct. They are two different processes that utilize the same mechanism to achieve the end result.

That's terrible. I was always taught to never even tap on a fish's tank, and now they mount it on a speaker? And I'm not sure how big that little iPod tank is but it can't be much bigger then those little dixie cups they keep the bettas in at the pet store. And we all know how happy they look in those little gunky cups.

I had a betta fish who lived for four years. His name was Ziggy Stardust. Great personality. He lived on my computer desk, calmly hanging out and blowing me kisses. He didn't like it if someone else sat at my desk though. He'd get all puffy, start swimming in circles and growling, then his water would start boiling. I wish I had a scanner so I could post his pic.

Maybe you're right, but the tank is 650 milliliters, which is less than the volume of two 12 ounce cans of soda. To keep a 3" fish in such a small tank is asinine. Shame on anyone who bought one of these.

Ten liters for a beta??? Seems a tad excessive.

I can't imagine being perched on top of a speaker as being pleasant though. Unless perhaps your a chick on the David Stern show.

I've had several bettas. Too bad I lost a few because the fish store workers told me they didn't need heated water. Farkers. Tiny Spock, I miss you. Bettas have lots of personality.

This thing is cruel. Yeah, it is *just* a fish, but there's not even any room for the little guy to turn around in. And then it's going to be forced to listen to whatever music/vibration the idiot who buys this will play as well.

Eqtworld, where did you get those pictures? Linky? We need LolBettas.

/Can we also do something about people who tap the fishtank? Stop doing that!

Tom: It's an "iPond" speaker. You see, it would be this speaker that you would put a fish in... and you could play different iPod songs on it.
Michael: That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life, Tom.
Samir: Yes, it is horrible, this idea.

strictly speaking, yes it is. Selective breeding is an evolutionary process.

what is not occurring here is speciation. Evolution is a process, not a result.

You only have the rights you fight to keep. I haven't seen any animals draft up a constitution or field an army to protect whatever rights they think they have.

I will tell you that a bear has the right to be left alone by me since I am unwilling to challenge it to deprive it of that right.

eqtworld: That would piss off a beta fish. Poor little guys.

They are OK in small tanks though. I have seen them shipped in wadded up wet newspaper. They are amazing little fish. They come from rice patties in asia and basically live in mud and puddles with stagnet watter.

------------------------
Actually, they END UP in little puddles by accident... it's not really good for them. During the rainy season, they swim on to flooded land to breed, and sometimes don't make it back to the river where they actually live. They have adapted to this, but it's not ideal. They actually have an organ called a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air- but they can't survive on it, as it's not as developed as the labyrinth on some "lungfish" The little betta bowls they often put them in are even worse for them- they don't have much open surface area for oxygen transfer, and this iPond thing is worse still- it has NO exposed surface area.
